For most developers, Microsoft’s documented wsl --install flow is the simplest starting point; where you store a project afterward matters for performance.
This guide covers how to install WSL, choose a project location, connect Windows and Linux workflows, and understand the requirements and limits of GUI apps, services, and enterprise use.
What WSL does—and what it does not
WSL provides a GNU/Linux environment on Windows, rather than merely imitating a Linux shell. You install a Linux distribution and run its tools in that environment. Microsoft describes WSL as a way to run Linux command-line tools, utilities, and applications directly on Windows without setting up dual boot or a traditional virtual machine. The standard Windows 11 installation flow sets WSL 2 as the default and installs Ubuntu by default. That makes WSL 2 the practical starting point for many developers, but it does not mean every Linux workload or application behaves identically to a native Linux installation.

How to install WSL on Windows 11
- Open PowerShell or Command Prompt and run
wsl --install. - Follow any prompts and restart Windows if requested. Microsoft’s setup flow enables WSL and Virtual Machine Platform components, downloads the latest Linux kernel, sets WSL 2 as the default, and installs Ubuntu by default.
- Launch the installed distribution and create a Linux username and password when prompted.

Where to keep project files
Choose the filesystem based on which operating system’s tools will work on the files most often. Microsoft recommends keeping projects in the Linux filesystem when using Linux command-line tools; working across the Windows/Linux filesystem boundary can significantly reduce performance.

Windows can also reach Linux files through \wsl.localhost<DistroName>.... Microsoft notes that the share is available while the distribution is running. The WSL interop guide covers filesystem access and how Windows and Linux commands interact.
How Windows and Linux work together
WSL is designed for mixed workflows, not just for running Linux commands in isolation. You can launch Windows executables from a Linux shell, run Linux commands from Windows, share files, and forward network connections. Microsoft’s interop guide explains command invocation and environment behavior, including examples of calling a Windows .exe from Linux and piping Windows command output into Linux tools.

That integration is useful when a project needs Linux utilities but still relies on Windows applications or files. Keep the filesystem-performance trade-off in mind when choosing where the working copy lives.
Linux GUI apps, GPU workloads, and services
Linux GUI applications
WSL supports Linux graphical applications using X11 and Wayland, with Linux app windows integrated into the Windows desktop. Requirements vary by Windows and WSL version, graphics driver, and application, so consult Microsoft’s Linux GUI apps guide for the specific prerequisites rather than assuming all Linux desktop software is supported in the same way.

GPU-accelerated workflows
Microsoft’s development environment guidance includes a setup path for GPU-accelerated machine-learning work. Whether acceleration works depends on the hardware and driver configuration; check current Microsoft and GPU-vendor requirements for the intended workload before relying on it.
systemd and Linux services
WSL supports systemd for managing Linux services. Microsoft says WSL version 0.67.6 or newer is required to enable systemd for distributions other than the current Ubuntu installed by wsl --install. Check your WSL version with wsl --version and update WSL if needed. One important operational detail: systemd services do not keep a WSL instance running by themselves. Security and organization-managed deployments
Microsoft’s enterprise guidance is aimed at administrators distributing and maintaining WSL environments. Its described setup gives Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11 22H2 as a prerequisite range; the advanced networking features discussed there require Windows 11 22H2 or later and WSL 2.0.9 or later. Under that documented configuration, Windows firewall rules apply to WSL. Administrators should verify current policy and tooling requirements before rollout. The guide also discusses controls such as Defender for Endpoint and Intune: Set up WSL for your company.
Linux access to Windows files follows the Windows account boundary: a Linux binary accessing a Windows file acts with the permissions of the Windows account that launched wsl.exe. Being root inside a WSL distribution does not grant Windows administrator permissions that account does not have.
When WSL is a good fit
WSL is a strong option when you want Linux tools close to a Windows development workflow, especially if you can keep Linux-heavy projects in the distribution’s filesystem. Before committing a workload, consider:
- Whether its tools expect Linux filesystem behavior or need particularly fast access to project files.
- Whether it requires a specific Linux kernel or hardware access not established by the WSL guidance here.
- Whether its GUI or GPU requirements are supported by your Windows version, WSL version, drivers, and application.
- Whether enterprise security, networking, and administration policies permit the configuration you need.
WSL, a Linux virtual machine, dual boot, and native Linux each involve different trade-offs. The Microsoft guidance cited here establishes WSL’s integration and configuration details, but not a universal feature-by-feature winner; make the choice around the workload’s filesystem, hardware, and administrative requirements.
