Start by checking mobile data, the selected SIM, signal and 5G settings; then refresh the connection. If those checks do not help, your carrier may need to verify coverage, an outage, SIM activation or device compatibility.
The menu paths below are for Google Pixel phones. Android settings and features differ by manufacturer, model and version; on another phone, use its maker’s support instructions for the equivalent settings.
What does the 5G icon actually mean?
Google says a 5G icon can mean your phone is in an area where 5G service is available; it does not prove the current data session is using 5G. Actual service and speed depend on signal, coverage, network type and carrier conditions. Buildings, walls and some phone cases can obstruct mobile signals, including 5G. For a useful check, turn Wi-Fi off briefly and try loading a page or using an app. That helps you judge the cellular connection rather than Wi-Fi. If service improves when you move outdoors or to another area, location or obstruction may be contributing. A 5G-to-LTE switch by itself does not establish a fault: the phone may be using the available network in that spot.

Check mobile data, SIM selection and the preferred network
Make sure the right SIM is handling data
- On a Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Confirm Mobile data is on and the carrier SIM is enabled.
- If you use more than one SIM, select the intended SIM for mobile data. Pixel instructions allow only one default data SIM at a time.
On a dual-SIM phone, check the settings for the SIM you actually use for data; settings may be listed separately for each SIM. If data fails only on one SIM, that is useful information to give your carrier.
Allow 5G if the phone and carrier offer it
In the SIM’s network settings, check that the preferred network type includes 5G. The available choices depend on the phone and carrier; Pixel options may include 5G, LTE, 3G or 2G. Do not force a network mode that is not offered by your carrier or device. A phone described as 5G-capable is not necessarily compatible with every carrier’s particular 5G network. Check Pixel settings that can affect 5G
During troubleshooting, turn off Battery Saver on a Pixel: Google says Pixel Battery Saver turns off 5G. Pixel’s Adaptive Connectivity may use 5G when an app needs more speed, such as while streaming video or downloading. It is intended to help conserve battery and may be limited by some U.S. carriers. If cellular data works only while connected to Wi-Fi, check that mobile data is enabled, the correct SIM is assigned for data and any account-level data limit has not been reached. If considering data roaming, first ask your carrier about availability and possible charges; roaming can incur fees.

Refresh the connection and install available updates
- Turn airplane mode on, wait briefly, then turn it off and test mobile data again.
- If that does not help, fully power the phone off, wait about 30 seconds, turn it back on and retest.
- Check for an available Android system update and install it. On Pixel, Google recommends restarting and checking for updates as part of general troubleshooting.

Work out whether the cause is location, service, SIM or compatibility
Use the pattern of the problem to narrow down what to check next. These comparisons can help localize a fault, but they are not a controlled diagnostic test.

- Only one location: Retest somewhere else. Ask the carrier whether it has coverage or an outage at the affected location.
- All mobile data is affected, not just 5G: Check SIM selection and account status, then ask the carrier to verify service and provisioning.
- One SIM is affected: If possible, compare with another SIM or test the affected SIM in another phone. A carrier can check activation and whether the SIM needs attention.
- The trouble began after a plan, SIM or device change: Ask the carrier to confirm the plan, SIM activation and exact phone model are provisioned for its network.
- 5G is missing on this phone but another device gets it: Confirm the exact model’s compatibility with your carrier. Google cautions that not all Pixel 4a (5G) and later models work with every 5G network.
A phone locked to its original carrier may be restricted to that provider until the lock is removed or the contract ends. If you see “No SIM,” an inactive SIM or a SIM error, check that it is enabled and properly seated if it is a physical SIM. Google suggests trying another SIM or testing yours in another phone when possible; contact the carrier about errors, activation or a replacement physical SIM. If the earlier checks do not resolve the issue, a Pixel offers Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings. Labels differ on other Android devices. If you also choose a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth reset, Google says saved Wi-Fi connections are cleared, so you will need to reconnect to those networks. Do not start with a factory reset. Google lists it after other troubleshooting and warns that it erases all phone data. If you decide it is warranted, back up the phone first and follow the instructions for your device. Google Pixel Phone Help: Fix mobile connectivity issues
When to contact your carrier
Contact the carrier if you still cannot connect after the checks above, especially if a SIM error appears or service stopped after an account, SIM or plan change. Ask it to check:
- Whether there is a local outage or a coverage limitation where you are.
- Whether your plan includes the relevant service and has not changed.
- Whether the SIM is active and correctly provisioned for data and 5G.
- Whether your exact phone model is compatible with the carrier’s 5G network.
The handset cannot confirm the carrier’s local outage, coverage, account provisioning or network compatibility records. Google’s Pixel help also notes that 5G availability and network types vary by carrier and area.
