Debian’s July 2023 announcement made riscv64 an official architecture in the Debian archive—not a ready-to-install stable release for every RISC-V board. The first official Debian release for 64-bit RISC-V arrived later, with Debian 13 “Trixie” on August 9, 2025. Today, Debian lists riscv64 as a released architecture, but board compatibility still needs to be checked individually.
What became official in July 2023?
On July 23, 2023, Debian developer Aurelien Jarno announced that “riscv64 is now an official Debian architecture.” In this context, official meant Debian had accepted the architecture into its project and archive process. It did not mean that a complete stable Debian release, or support for every RISC-V computer, was available that day. Jarno’s announcement said the archive was “currently almost empty” and that only the sid and experimental suites were available.

The next step was to build and import a minimal bootstrap set of roughly 90 source packages, followed by additional build-infrastructure work. That was an early foundation for the port, not evidence that the full package collection was already built or ready for general use.
When did Debian RISC-V become a released platform?
Debian’s milestones distinguish archive recognition from release availability:
#1 Best Overall
- Flexible MCU Board: Incorporate the ESP32-C3 32-bit RISC-V chip, operating up to 160 MHz, mounted multiple development ports,
- Developer Friendly: Compatible with Arduino IDE, MicroPython, CircuitPython, PlatformIO, ESP IDF, Zephyr, Matter, ESPNow, Meshtastic, WLED, ESPHome, Home Assistant, Ubidots
- Outstanding RF performance: Complete Wi-Fi functions and Bluetooth Low Energy, while supporting communication over 100m with anFL antenna
- Elaborate Power Design: 4 working modes as low as 44 μA in deep sleep mode, while supporting lithium battery charge management
- Thumb-sized Design: 21 x 17.5mm, Seeed Studio XIAO series classic form factor
- July 23, 2023: riscv64 became an official Debian archive architecture; only sid and experimental were available at the time. Debian announcement
- May 18, 2025: Debian’s RISC-V wiki recorded riscv64 as a release architecture for Trixie. Debian RISC-V wiki
- August 9, 2025: Debian released Debian 13 “Trixie,” its first official release supporting riscv64. Debian 13 release announcement and Trixie riscv64 installation guide
Debian’s ports page currently lists riscv64 as “released” and added in Debian 13. Debian ports That current release status should not be confused with the sparse archive that existed in July 2023.
What does Debian’s riscv64 port target?
riscv64 is Debian’s port for 64-bit, little-endian RISC-V systems running Linux. The label describes the architecture and operating-system target; it is not a certification that every board using a 64-bit RISC-V processor can boot Debian or use all of its peripherals. Debian’s riscv64 port page and RISC-V wiki describe the port and its status.

Can you install Debian on a RISC-V board now?
Yes, if your particular board and setup are supported by Debian’s current installation materials. Start with the official Trixie riscv64 installation guide and Debian’s supported hardware information. Check the exact board model and revision, boot and firmware requirements, storage setup, and the peripherals you need; general support for riscv64 alone does not establish that each of those components will work.
Debian’s installation guide notes that riscv64 has had less user exposure and testing than some other architectures, so users may encounter bugs. That is a practical caution, not a statement that installation is impossible: consult the board-specific documentation and be prepared to troubleshoot.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Ample PSRAM Storage – The development board offers 8MB PSRAM, providing substantial extra memory for handling more complex tasks, large data buffers, and advanced processing.
- Enhanced Multi-Tasking Capability – With the additional 8MB PSRAM, the ESP32-C5-WIFI6-KIT can efficiently manage multiple protocol stacks simultaneously, ensuring smooth operation in multi-tasking IoT environments.
- Support for Medium-Load Applications – The 8MB PSRAM allows the ESP32-C5 to handle medium-load applications more effectively, making it ideal for scenarios requiring real-time data processing or continuous communication.
- Seamless Performance – The increased memory improves the overall performance and responsiveness of the device, particularly when running applications with larger memory footprints or more demanding computations.
- Future-Proof for Complex Projects – With 8MB of PSRAM, developers are better equipped to build scalable, high-performance solutions that support both current and future IoT use cases, offering flexibility for future-proofing designs.
