Meta says it uses that information to complete requests, remember details, offer suggestions, and improve its AI models. You can manage connected services and memory and opt out of training use, but Meta’s launch system does not technically prevent the company from accessing Muse data when needed to support, secure, or operate the service.
What information can Meta Muse access or store?
Muse is Meta’s personal AI agent, introduced in September 2026. Meta said it was rolling out in the United States on iOS, Android, and muse.ai, with support for its glasses planned later; availability and features may change. The exact information available to Muse depends partly on what you share in conversation, which services you connect, the permissions you grant, and what task you ask it to perform. Meta has not published a complete Muse-specific inventory of data categories or a schedule saying how long each category is retained.

Conversations and memory

Information from connected services
If you connect an email account or another supported service, Muse can use information available within the permission scope you grant. Meta says read and write access can be separated where supported. The information it can access therefore varies by service, permission, and task; connecting a service does not establish that Muse can access every item in the account.
Meta describes tasks such as using email and calendar information, drafting or sending communications, browsing websites, filling forms, and making purchases subject to approval controls. These are examples of intended functionality, not a guarantee that every task is available or will be completed without error.
Workspace files, outputs, credentials, and activity
Meta says files placed in Muse’s working environment, along with material the agent generates or uses on your behalf, are stored in a dedicated Muse Secure VM. According to Meta, third-party credentials and authentication tokens are kept in a separate isolated container within that VM, rather than being visible to the main agent. For browser sign-ins, Meta says credentials are stored securely and inserted when needed.
Meta’s engineering account also describes operational data such as inference data, conversation trajectories, tool calls, handoffs between subagents, and telemetry. The public materials reviewed do not provide an exhaustive Muse-specific list of app, device, diagnostic, or content data, or explain retention periods for each type.
Meta’s U.S. Regional Privacy Notice lists broad categories that may be collected across covered Meta products, including identifiers, device and network activity, location, photos, video and audio, inferred preferences, and some sensitive information. How does Meta say it uses Muse data?
To perform tasks and maintain context
Meta says Muse uses conversation context and information from connected services to carry out requests, work in the background, remember details, suggest actions, and coordinate longer-term goals. That may involve using account content or workspace files to complete the specific task you request.
To improve its models
Meta says conversation and action trajectories may be used to train new model checkpoints. It says it sanitizes this data to remove key personally identifying information and provides an opt-out in Muse settings. For advertising: Meta’s stated boundary and its caveat
Meta says, “Muse doesn’t share a person’s conversations or the data in their VM with Meta’s ad systems.” It also says that actions Muse takes on outside websites can indirectly affect the ads you see: for example, a visit, reservation, or Marketplace search may appear as your activity on that service and influence advertising. Separately, Meta’s connector guidelines tell third-party connector providers to request only the data they need and prohibit secondary use for unrelated advertising, unrelated profiling, or model training. Meta says you can choose which services to connect, manage or disconnect them, inspect Muse’s activity log, review and edit memory, and ask Muse to forget selected details. Meta also describes prompts and approval controls for sensitive actions such as sending email or making purchases. To opt out of training use, look for the training control in Muse settings. The materials reviewed establish that an opt-out is offered, but do not specify a stable settings path or exact control label.

What are the security limits?
Meta describes an architecture that isolates the VM from the agent runtime, uses a separate Sentinel service to control network access and permissions, and stores credentials separately. Meta also says operational policies restrict personnel access. However, the launch VM does not technically prevent Meta from accessing data when necessary to support, secure, or operate Muse. Meta described a Confidential VM as a planned future system intended to cryptographically prevent Meta access; that protection should not be assumed to have been generally available at launch.
Meta’s engineering author, Tarek Sheasha, Software Engineer and VP at Meta Superintelligence Labs, wrote on September 8, 2026: “Muse isn’t immune to attack. Prompt injection remains an open problem in the industry — and Muse will sometimes make mistakes.”
What was reported about unexpected Messages access?
On September 30, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported journalist Jason Aten’s allegation that Muse synced a local Messages database on his Mac despite his account that he had not granted full disk access. The report said the sync was noticed while it was processing a large number of database rows. This is a report about one user’s experience; it does not establish how often this occurs, its scope across other users, or a complete explanation of what happened. Tom’s Hardware report

What this means before you connect an account
- Check which service you are connecting and the specific permissions it requests; grant only the access you are comfortable with.
- Review Muse’s memory and activity log, and remove details or disconnect services you no longer want it to use.
- If you do not want eligible conversation or action data used for model training, use the opt-out in Muse settings.
- For sensitive tasks, pay attention to approval prompts and verify what Muse is about to send, submit, or purchase.
