What Data Do Android Desktop Companion Apps Sync—and How Can You Protect It?

Phone Link can expose several categories of Android data on a PC, while Quick Share focuses on selected nearby file transfers. Learn what each can reveal and how to limit access.

Android desktop companion apps can expose messages, notifications, calls, photos, files, copied content, contacts, and—in supported setups—phone apps on a computer. They do not all sync the same things: what is available depends on the app, the phone and PC, the permissions you grant, and the features you switch on. For ongoing access, Microsoft Phone Link is broader; Google Quick Share is designed for sending selected files between nearby devices. The safest approach is to enable only the features you need, review Android permissions, and treat a shared or unattended PC as access to private phone information.

What can an Android companion app expose on a PC?

“Sync” can mean more than copying a complete phone backup. With Phone Link and its Android companion, Link to Windows, selected phone features can be viewed or used from a paired Windows PC. Google Quick Share has a narrower purpose: transferring files selected by the sender. These are different kinds of connections, and neither description means every category is automatically available in every setup.

Microsoft says Phone Link uses the same Microsoft account for pairing and that Android permissions let the PC access the content needed for enabled features. Availability varies by phone manufacturer, model, and feature support. The following table describes the categories documented for Phone Link and the practical exposure each can create.

Data or capability What the feature can do Privacy consideration
Text messages Read and reply to texts when the relevant access is granted. Messages may include private conversations or SMS one-time authentication codes. Microsoft warns that such codes can be visible in Phone Link when message permission is granted. Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup
Notifications Display and manage Android notifications after notification access is enabled. Notification previews can disclose fragments of messages, account alerts, or other information visible on the phone.
Calls and call history Make and receive calls; on supported platforms, contact-sync settings may provide access to contacts and call history. The PC can reveal incoming callers and information about whom you have contacted.
Photos Access phone photos, subject to compatibility and permissions. Images may reveal personal details or location-related context through what they depict.
Files and copied content Transfer files and use cross-device copy and paste. A received file can be saved to a PC location; transfers may use mobile data if enabled. A copied password, private text, or file can cross from one device to another. The destination and clipboard behavior matter. Microsoft’s transfer guidance
Contacts When contacts are synced with a Microsoft account, Microsoft says contact data may be available in other Microsoft apps and services. Contact sync can make address-book information accessible beyond the paired PC feature itself.
Supported apps and phone screen On supported devices, Phone Link can provide access to supported mobile apps or phone-screen interaction. Someone using the PC may be able to interact with some phone content, depending on the phone and enabled feature.
Quick Share files Send selected files to nearby devices, with visibility settings; the recipient generally must accept the transfer. It is a transfer rather than continuous phone access, but visibility and the identity of the receiver still matter. Google’s Quick Share guidance

These categories are not a promise that every Phone Link installation supports every feature. Phone model, Android version, app version, permissions, and feature availability all matter. A feature may be absent or may require an additional permission before it works. Contact sync is also a choice: Microsoft notes that synced contact data may be available in other Microsoft apps and services, so consider the account-level reach of that setting as well as what appears in Phone Link.

Phone Link and Quick Share are not interchangeable

Choose based on whether you need a persistent set of phone features on a PC or a one-time file transfer. Phone Link can bring several categories of phone activity into the computer experience. Quick Share is centered on sending chosen files to a nearby recipient, rather than exposing messages, calls, or notifications as an ongoing desktop feature.

Consideration Phone Link / Link to Windows Quick Share for Windows
Purpose Ongoing access to selected features such as messages, calls, notifications, photos, files, clipboard, and supported apps. Nearby transfer of selected files between Android and Windows.
Setup Pair using the same Microsoft account and grant Android permissions for the features you want. Quick Share is built into Android on supported versions; Windows requires the Quick Share app. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled on Windows.
Exposure scope Can be broad, depending on enabled features and granted permissions. Focused on selected transfers, with visibility settings and recipient acceptance.
Compatibility note Feature support varies by Android phone manufacturer and model. Google’s Windows app is for non-Samsung PCs; Samsung PC users should use Samsung’s app. Check current support for the specific device.

For Quick Share for Windows details and supported-device guidance, see Google’s Quick Share for Windows page. The Quick Share settings and acceptance behavior are described in Google’s Android Help article.

How to reduce what Phone Link can access

Turn off features you do not use

  1. On the Windows PC, open Phone Link and select Settings > Features.
  2. Review the available categories, such as Notifications, Messages, Calls, and Photos.
  3. Turn off categories you do not want available on that PC. Keep only the features you actually use.

This is the most direct way to narrow the desktop experience without necessarily removing the pairing altogether. Microsoft’s feature and setup guidance is at Phone Link requirements and setup. In other words, you can keep a useful feature such as calls while disabling message access if that is the better trade-off for you.

Review Link to Windows permissions on Android

  1. Open Android Settings and find the app settings for Link to Windows. The exact menu path varies by Android version and phone maker.
  2. Open the app’s permissions and revoke any access that is not required for features you intend to keep.
  3. For a broader check, use Android’s Permission Manager to inspect apps by permission category, such as contacts or notifications where shown.

Android’s steps for changing an app’s permissions are documented in Google Play Help. Revoking a permission may stop the associated Phone Link feature from working; if you later need it, grant the permission again deliberately. Permission Manager is useful when you want to review a category across apps rather than only inspect Link to Windows. Menu names and available controls can differ by manufacturer and Android release.

Check recent permission access

On supported Android versions, open Settings > Privacy > Privacy Dashboard to see recent permission use. Google documents a seven-day view for Android 13 and a 24-hour view for Android 12. The dashboard helps identify recent access; it is not a control that disables access by itself. See Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions.

Give messages and authentication codes extra scrutiny

SMS access deserves particular care because text messages may contain sign-in codes as well as ordinary conversations. Microsoft specifically warns that SMS two-factor authentication codes can be visible in Phone Link when message permission is granted. If you do not need to read or reply to texts from the PC, switch off Messages in Phone Link and remove the corresponding Android access if it is not needed for another feature.

Consider the computer’s physical access, not just its pairing status. A PC used by family members, coworkers, or guests can expose whatever Phone Link makes available while the session is accessible. Lock the Windows account when you step away, avoid pairing with an account others can freely use, and use a screen lock on the phone as well. These steps protect access to the endpoints; they do not establish how long any particular data remains on a device.

Control Quick Share visibility before sending

Quick Share lets you choose who can see your device. For ordinary use, Google’s documented options include Your devices and Contacts. If you temporarily select Everyone for 10 minutes, visibility automatically returns to the previous selection when the period ends. Confirm the receiver’s displayed name and accept only transfers you expect.

  1. Open Quick Share on Android and review the device visibility setting.
  2. Choose Your devices or Contacts for routine use rather than leaving broader visibility active.
  3. If you use Everyone for 10 minutes, treat it as a temporary window and verify the intended receiver before sharing.
  4. On the receiving device, accept only a transfer you recognize.

Quick Share’s visibility choices and temporary setting are described in Google’s Quick Share help. The general Windows setup and supported-PC notes are on Google’s Quick Share for Windows page. Quick Share can be a better fit than an ongoing companion link when all you need is to send a particular file, but it still calls for checking who can see the device and who will receive it.

Check transfer destinations and mobile-data use

File transfer creates another copy, so consider where it lands. Phone Link allows users to change the PC save location for files received from the phone. In the other direction, shared files may also be saved in a Downloads folder on the phone. If the PC is shared or managed by someone else, a familiar transfer can leave a file in a location other users can browse. Review the destination before sending sensitive material and clean up copies you no longer need.

Cross-device copy and paste may use mobile data when Wi-Fi is unavailable if mobile-data syncing is allowed. If cellular use or transferring content while away from Wi-Fi is a concern, disable that option in the relevant Phone Link transfer settings. Microsoft documents file destinations and mobile-data behavior in Seamlessly transfer content between your devices. Clipboard convenience also means content you copied for one purpose can end up on the other device, so avoid copying secrets if you do not want them available there.

What is not established about storage and retention?

Microsoft’s setup and transfer documentation explains pairing, permissions, supported features, and some transfer behavior, but it does not define a universal retention period for every data category. It also does not establish from those pages that all content always remains only on the phone and PC, or that every category is always routed through the cloud or protected by a particular encryption arrangement. Do not infer those properties from the word “sync.” If storage location, retention, or encryption is decisive for your use, consult the current privacy and product documentation for the specific app and feature rather than assuming one behavior applies to all of them.

Compatibility and available controls can change with phone model, Android version, Windows app version, and feature updates. Check the settings and support information for the devices you actually use; a feature described for a supported configuration may not appear or behave identically on another phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What data does Phone Link sync from Android?

Depending on device support, permissions, and enabled features, Phone Link can expose messages, notifications, calls, photos, files, cross-device copy and paste, contacts, and supported apps or phone-screen interaction. It is not an all-or-nothing phone backup; review Settings > Features and Android app permissions to see what applies to your setup.

Can Phone Link show my text messages and two-factor codes?

Yes. Microsoft says Phone Link can read and reply to texts when the relevant access is granted, and warns that SMS two-factor authentication codes may be visible. Turn off Messages and revoke unneeded message access if you do not want texts available on the PC.

How do I stop Android notifications from appearing on my PC?

In Phone Link on Windows, open Settings > Features and turn off Notifications. You can also review Link to Windows permissions in Android Settings; the exact path varies by phone and Android version.

How do I turn off Quick Share visibility?

Open Quick Share on Android and choose a narrower visibility option, such as Your devices or Contacts. If you use Everyone for 10 minutes, Google says visibility automatically returns to the previous selection after that temporary period.

Does Phone Link keep my data only on my devices, or for a set time?

The reviewed Microsoft setup and transfer pages do not establish one universal storage location or retention period for every data category. Avoid assuming all content stays local, is always cloud-routed, or has a particular encryption or retention arrangement; consult the current documentation for the specific product and feature.

The Bottom Line

Phone Link can make several categories of phone information available on a PC, including SMS codes, while Quick Share is for selected nearby file transfers. Enable only the features you need, review Android permissions and recent access, limit Quick Share visibility, and protect both devices with locks. Check transfer destinations and mobile-data settings, and do not assume a universal storage or retention policy.
