What Data Do AI Cybersecurity Tools Collect, and How Is It Used?

AI security tools can collect device and account telemetry, and some can capture prompts and responses. What they retain and how they use it depends on the product and its settings.

AI cybersecurity tools may collect anything from file and process metadata to account activity—and tools that monitor generative AI use may capture prompts and responses. The exact data depends on the product, its collectors and integrations, and administrator settings. Providers use it for threat detection, investigation, response, policy enforcement, and service operation; collection does not automatically mean every file is uploaded or that customer data trains an AI model.

What kinds of data can these tools collect?

“AI cybersecurity tool” covers several different types of products. Endpoint detection and identity monitoring observe activity on devices and accounts. AI interaction monitoring can inspect activity involving chatbots, AI agents, or other generative AI services. A product’s collection depends on where it is connected and how it is configured; one provider’s list is not a universal inventory.

Endpoint and device telemetry

Endpoint tools may collect details about files, running processes, accounts, devices, and networks. Huntress, for example, lists file paths and metadata such as size, timestamps, and hashes; process details such as parameters, process IDs, timing, parent process, and associated account; operating-system version and updates; device configuration; and network attributes including IP and MAC addresses and hostname. Its list also includes limited Microsoft Defender information. These are examples from Huntress’s products, not a statement about every endpoint tool (Huntress Support, updated July 9, 2025).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Metadata and event context are not the same as a copy of a file’s full contents. The Huntress documentation describes file details and infection-related resources, but does not establish that endpoint tools generally upload every user file. Ask the vendor which content, if any, is collected in the configuration you intend to use.

Identity and session activity

Identity tools may collect sign-in and session events to assess whether account activity appears legitimate. For its Managed ITDR service connected to Microsoft 365, Huntress lists details such as browser, country, operating system, tunnels, access locations, recent event time, Microsoft identity GUID, user principal name, and linked licenses. It also lists inbox rule names and actions. The specific fields and retention terms apply to that service and its Microsoft 365 connection, not to identity products as a whole (Huntress Support, updated July 9, 2025).

Prompts, responses, and AI-use context

Tools designed to monitor generative AI activity can collect more content-sensitive records. CrowdStrike’s AIDR documentation describes telemetry that may include prompts, model responses, user identities, device information, application context, timestamps, detection results, and actions. Its documented collector contexts include browser, endpoint, application, gateway, agentic, and cloud or infrastructure logging. Whether a particular organization collects these fields depends on the collectors and configuration it enables (CrowdStrike AIDR Overview, accessed October 4, 2026).

AIDR also documents detection capabilities for malicious prompts, unsafe MCP tool definitions, malicious IP addresses, URLs and domains, and sensitive material such as personally identifiable information, confidential data, secrets, keys, and code. Depending on policy, a detection can be reported, content can be transformed through redaction, masking, encryption, or defanging, or a request can be blocked. These are available capabilities, not proof that every collector or policy action is enabled in every deployment (CrowdStrike AIDR Overview, accessed October 4, 2026).

Microsoft’s Defender Agent 365 documentation provides another example: its security capabilities can include observability trace payloads that may contain session inputs and outputs, as well as agent configuration attributes and user, tenant, subscription, or agent identifiers. Microsoft says developers and customers control trace contents through instrumentation, and administrators can enable or disable the capabilities. Some identifiers are pseudonymized; pseudonymization should not be mistaken for complete anonymity (Microsoft Learn, last updated May 4, 2026).

How is the collected data used?

Providers describe using telemetry to detect threats, investigate suspicious activity, respond to incidents, and enforce security policies. Combining endpoint, identity, network, and AI-use records can help analysts connect separate events into a timeline. AI interaction monitoring may also be used to identify sensitive-data exposure or policy violations and to see patterns of AI use.

Some provider policies also describe processing for support, reliability and security analytics, and service improvement. Check the terms for the specific product: a stated purpose in one provider’s policy does not establish that every vendor uses the same data for the same purposes. Check Point’s privacy policy, for example, describes security and threat detection, support, analytics, and service improvement, subject to applicable law, contractual commitments, and customer configuration (Check Point Privacy Policy, accessed October 4, 2026).

AI features do not by themselves prove model training

Do not infer that collected customer data is used to train AI models simply because a security product uses AI. Microsoft states that customer data is not used to train AI models without user consent, and that generative AI foundation-model training requires documented customer instructions under the cited product terms. This is a Microsoft-specific commitment; check the applicable data-processing agreement and product terms for other services (Microsoft Learn, last updated May 4, 2026).

How long is data kept, where is it stored, and who can receive it?

There is no single retention period for AI cybersecurity tools. Different data types within one service can have different schedules, and retention terms from different providers do not measure equivalent datasets.

Product or policy Published handling example Scope and qualification
Microsoft Defender Agent 365 Up to 30 days for observability and session data; up to 180 days for agent inventory and data shared with Defender Microsoft says the data is stored in the European Union for tenants provisioned in the EU or UK, and in the United States for other regions. The tenant’s region cannot be changed after creation. Microsoft says this customer data is deleted within 30 days after contract end or expiration. These are terms for this specified service, not a cross-vendor norm. (Microsoft Learn, last updated May 4, 2026)
Huntress Managed ITDR 14 days for “Tracked Events”; inbox rule names and actions remain stored while the rule is active These periods apply to the listed ITDR data. Huntress says, unless otherwise noted, collected data is held indefinitely in U.S.-based data centers. (Huntress Support, updated July 9, 2025)
Check Point privacy policy As long as needed for stated purposes, unless a longer legal retention period applies The policy notes that backups may remain beyond the original data’s retention period. This is a policy-level description, not a fixed duration for every data type. (Check Point Privacy Policy, accessed October 4, 2026)

Sharing also depends on the service and enabled integrations. Microsoft describes sharing some Defender data with other licensed Microsoft products, including Defender for Endpoint, Security Exposure Management, and Entra ID Protection. Check Point describes sharing with vendors and service providers, partners, and affiliates in circumstances covered by its policy. Review the relevant data-processing agreement, subprocessor list, regional terms, and integration settings rather than assuming data stays within one product.

What privacy risks should organizations consider?

Security telemetry can be useful for defense and still create privacy risk. Identifiers, location and session records, and activity histories may reveal patterns about people. Pseudonymized identifiers reduce direct identification in some contexts but do not guarantee that someone cannot be re-identified. NIST warns that AI’s predictive capabilities can reveal greater insights about people and amplify behavioral tracking and surveillance (NIST, Cybersecurity, Privacy, and AI, updated July 15, 2026).

For that reason, assess data collection as a lifecycle and governance issue, not just a privacy-notice checkbox. NIST’s Risk Management Framework treats security and privacy risk management as an ongoing process that includes controls and continuous monitoring (NIST SP 800-37 Rev. 2, published December 20, 2018).

How to evaluate a tool before enabling it

Use these questions to compare products and confirm what a planned deployment will actually collect. They are evaluation prompts, not legal advice or a substitute for reviewing the contract.

  • Data scope: Does the configuration collect events and metadata only, or content such as prompts, responses, files, or message bodies?
  • Collection points: Which endpoint agents, browser extensions, gateways, application SDKs or APIs, cloud integrations, or identity connections are involved?
  • Configuration: Which collectors and policies are on by default? Can an administrator disable them or restrict fields?
  • Purpose and model use: Is data used for detection and investigation, service operation or improvement, analytics, or model development and training? What do the product terms say?
  • Retention and deletion: What is the duration for each data type? What happens to backups, archives, investigation holds, and data after contract termination?
  • Location and access: Where is data stored, which cross-border transfers apply, who can access it, and are access permissions and audit trails available?
  • Sharing: Which subprocessors, service providers, affiliates, or other products in the vendor’s suite can receive data? Is threat-intelligence sharing involved?
  • Redaction and enforcement: Can sensitive content be masked, transformed, or blocked before it reaches an AI model or is returned to a user?

Before deployment, ask the vendor to identify the exact event and content fields collected by your proposed configuration, whether prompts and outputs are stored, and for how long. Confirm the applicable regions, subprocessors, model-training terms, controls for disabling collectors or redacting fields, and what remains in backup or archival systems after deletion.
