What Data Center Contamination Does to Servers and Cooling Systems

Dust can load filters and undermine cooling, while corrosive gases can damage circuit boards. Learn how data centers detect and control both risks.

Data-center contamination can impair cooling and damage electronics in two different ways: particles such as dust load filters and obstruct airflow, while corrosive gases can attack metals on circuit boards and components. The effects range from higher energy use and reduced cooling effectiveness to shortened equipment life and electrical failure. Operators need separate controls and monitoring for particles and gases; a clean-looking room or acceptable temperature alone cannot establish that equipment is protected.

How dust and debris affect servers and cooling systems

Dust is more than a housekeeping problem. As particles accumulate, they can clog filters in air conditioners and IT equipment. ASHRAE’s 2023 Handbook—HVAC Applications, Chapter 20, links filter clogging with reduced cooling effectiveness, shorter IT-equipment lifespan, and increased energy use.

Contamination can come from outside air, but it can also be introduced inside the facility. ASHRAE identifies unpacking or uncrating equipment in the room, storing boxes or dirty equipment there, paper dust from nearby printing, and entrances without foot-wipe pads as potential sources. Stored boxes and dirty equipment can accelerate filter loading.

As equipment density increases, the heat load per unit of room volume may also rise, requiring more airflow. ASHRAE’s 2011 contamination guideline notes that greater airflow can increase electronics’ exposure to accumulated dust and gaseous contaminants. The actual effect depends on the site and its equipment: the guidance does not establish a universal temperature increase or failure rate caused by dust.

How corrosive gases can damage electronics

Gaseous contamination can cause electrical problems even when room temperature and cooling appear acceptable. ASHRAE’s 2011 guidance discusses sulfur-bearing pollutants, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), as corrosion concerns. Corrosion can promote ion migration and conductive creep across closely spaced circuit-board features, potentially leading to short circuits. Sulfur-bearing gases can also attack silver-bearing components, forming silver sulfide and compromising package integrity.

Corrosion risk depends on the pollutant mixture as well as humidity, temperature, and the materials exposed. ASHRAE’s 2020 summary of RP-1755 research, conducted from 2015 to 2018, reported that in its tests at 21°C and 50% relative humidity, significant copper corrosion occurred only when chlorine was included in the tested gas mixture, while significant silver corrosion occurred only with hydrogen sulfide. At 80% relative humidity, significant copper corrosion occurred regardless of the pollutant mixture in those tests; higher humidity did not significantly increase silver corrosion thickness.

The same research reported that raising temperature from 21°C to 28°C at 50% relative humidity reduced copper corrosion under the tested conditions, while significant silver corrosion remained with the hydrogen-sulfide mixture. These are findings from a particular research program, not a prediction for every facility or a reason to change operating temperature without considering equipment and cooling requirements.

How to detect contamination in a data center

Check filters and dust sources

Inspect air-handling and IT-equipment filters for visible dust and loading. ASHRAE’s 2023 Handbook identifies detailed visual inspection of air-handling filters as a way to detect airborne dust. Pair inspections with checks for indoor sources such as stored boxes, equipment uncrating, nearby printing, and entry paths.

Measure corrosivity with copper and silver coupons

Odor, appearance, and temperature are not reliable substitutes for measuring corrosivity. Place reactive copper and silver coupons in the datacom environment, then have a laboratory analyze them to quantify corrosion. ASHRAE’s 2023 Handbook describes about one month as a typical exposure period and recommends testing at least twice a year: once in winter and once in summer.

ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline describes placing coupons about 5 cm in front of the rack on the air-inlet side, at one-quarter and three-quarter frame height, or at a location with higher air velocity. Use the applicable current test procedure and the laboratory’s deployment instructions when placing coupons.

A copper-coupon color-index method can screen for conditions that warrant more quantitative testing, according to ASHRAE’s 2020 RP-1755 summary. It is a screening method, not a substitute for laboratory confirmation.

Which controls address particles and which address gases?

Control Contaminant and treatment point What to consider
Particulate filtration Captures airborne particles in entering air or recirculated air. Filter selection must suit the air-handling system and site conditions. Dust sources and filter loading still need attention.
Gas-phase filtration Treats gaseous contaminants in inlet air, recirculated room air, or both. Use measured site corrosivity and system compatibility to guide the decision; particle filters alone do not address corrosive gases.
Filtered-air pressurization Can reduce the ingress of contaminated outdoor air by maintaining the room under positive pressure with filtered air. ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline describes this approach; facility design and operating conditions determine whether it is suitable.

Particulate filtration and source control

ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline calls for data centers to meet ISO Class 8 cleanliness. For data centers without air-side economizers, it says room air may be continuously filtered with MERV 8 filters and entering air may be filtered with MERV 11, or preferably MERV 13, filters. For free-air cooling or air-side economizers, filter choice depends on site conditions. These are recommendations from the 2011 document, not universal current specifications; check applicable current guidance and equipment compatibility before selecting filters.

Gas-phase filtration

ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline recommends gas-phase filtration of inlet and recirculated room air when measured gaseous contamination exceeds its stated G1 corrosion criteria. ASHRAE’s 2020 RP-1755 summary also recommends removing highly corrosive catalyst-type pollutants using chemical filtration, and advises site-selection teams to test coupons extensively or measure pollutant concentrations in and around candidate locations.

The 2011 guideline cites one implementation in which gas-phase filtration reduced measured silver corrosion from about 1,000 Å/month to below 100 Å/month. That is an example from one installation, not a performance guarantee for another site.

How to interpret corrosion limits and test results

ASHRAE TC 9.9’s 2011 guideline gives reactivity-rate limits of less than 300 Å/month for copper coupons and less than 200 Å/month for silver coupons. Treat these figures as thresholds from that edition, not universal guarantees of equipment reliability. Later ASHRAE material emphasizes that results depend on pollutant chemistry, humidity, temperature, and exposed materials, making site measurements important.

ASHRAE’s 2020 RP-1755 summary reports experiment settings that included 21°C and 50% relative humidity as a reference condition, as well as 28°C and 70% or 80% relative humidity. These are research conditions, not recommended operating targets. Before using any threshold to specify a facility, confirm the applicable current ASHRAE edition, test method, and equipment-manufacturer limits.
