AI robots need task-relevant data about their surroundings and their own condition, plus sensors, control systems, compute, communications, security, and testing that work together. Keep time-critical decisions on the robot where possible; use edge and cloud resources for functions such as coordination, storage, training, and model management. The right division depends on the task, urgency, privacy needs, available bandwidth, power and compute limits, and safety context—not on a universal robot blueprint.
What data does an AI robot need?
A robot needs information that helps it estimate what is happening, choose an action, and carry it out. The useful data therefore depend on the job and the conditions in which the robot operates; a sensor list alone does not define a suitable dataset.

Data about the environment and the robot
Depending on the application, inputs may include camera or audio data, inertial measurements, force or contact sensing, joint encoder readings, position, and pressure. These are examples of sensor types in an AWS physical AI architecture, not a required package for every robot.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes robot operation as sensing and estimating a situation, planning and adapting actions, then executing through locomotion, grasping, or other actuation. Depending on the task, the robot may also interact with people, other robots, or equipment. A dataset for evaluation should include the conditions and variations relevant to those behaviors.

Data handling across device, edge, and cloud
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) AIoT model assigns different data functions to different layers: a device can preprocess data and select what to transmit; an edge system can filter, clean, edit, and add metadata; and cloud systems can hold large-scale, long-term datasets. This layered approach can limit unnecessary transfers while preserving selected operational records for monitoring, auditing, and anomaly detection. The data should be documented well enough to understand its origin and context; NIST identifies validated, well-documented datasets and reproducible collection as important to effective robotics AI and machine learning.
Where should robot computing happen?
There is no single best location for every function. A useful architecture divides work according to how quickly a response is needed, what can operate locally, and what benefits from shared or large-scale resources.
On the robot: immediate perception and control
Keep functions that need timely closed-loop responses on the robot when feasible, such as preprocessing, lightweight inference, and autonomous control. Local processing reduces reliance on a network round trip for immediate actions. It can also help a robot continue operating when connectivity is interrupted, provided its design and safety case support that behavior.

At the edge: nearby context and coordination
A nearby edge node can provide contextual inference, coordinate devices in the area, manage deployments, and support local analytics or model adjustment when resources permit. It can also filter or annotate data before forwarding selected information to the cloud.
In the cloud: fleet-wide data and model lifecycle
Cloud infrastructure can support large-scale or long-term storage, centralized training and optimization, global orchestration, and model versioning and distribution. An AWS reference architecture illustrates a simulation-to-deployment cycle that collects sensor data, stores it, trains or retrains models, monitors operation, and deploys updates to robot-edge systems. It is an example, not a requirement to use AWS products.
ITU-T F.748.66 describes embodied AI as spanning foundation models, cloud-edge-device computing, physical robot components, and functional layers for perception, decision-making, execution, interaction, and learning. It frames sensor-data routing as a decision based on workload and urgency, rather than a rule that all data belongs in one place.

How do you choose the right architecture?
Decide where each function belongs by assessing the actual deployment, rather than starting with a preferred cloud or hardware product. Compare the options against these factors:
- Urgency and latency: Which decisions must be made inside the robot’s control loop, and which can tolerate a trip to an edge node or cloud service?
- Privacy and data movement: Which sensor records need to remain local, and what selected information can be shared?
- Network conditions: What bandwidth and connection reliability are available, and what should happen during an outage?
- Compute and energy: Can the robot, edge node, or cloud resource perform the required work within available compute and power limits?
- Operations at scale: How will teams monitor devices, coordinate a fleet, manage model versions, and distribute updates?
- Safety and validation: What evidence is needed to show that the integrated robot performs acceptably in its intended environment?
These trade-offs affect one another. For example, sending more sensor data upstream may support centralized analysis, but also increases bandwidth use and data movement. Conversely, local processing can support timely action, but compute, energy, and model-management limits still matter. The sources do not establish one latency target or hardware specification that applies to every robot.

Robots depend on communication among devices, edge systems, and cloud services, so security is part of the architecture rather than an add-on. The ITU model includes secure communications and lifecycle management for data and models. Relevant capabilities include secure communication, mutual authentication, and encryption.

Operational systems should also make it possible to monitor robots remotely, diagnose faults, control model versions, and detect performance changes over time. Data and model handling should be traceable enough to support audits and investigations. These capabilities help teams understand what was deployed and what the robot was doing when an issue arose.
How should robot reliability be evaluated?
Reliability claims need defined measures and system-level testing. NIST’s robotics measurement work addresses performance metrics, information models, datasets, test methods, and protocols. Because a robot integrates sensing, algorithms, planning, actuation, and interaction, testing a model or component alone cannot establish the performance of the complete system.
Recommended Free Tools
NIST’s Physical AI and Data Generation project aims to develop metrics, methods, standards, software, prototypes, and datasets to support adoption of AI-enhanced robotics. The project is an effort to develop evaluation resources; it does not establish that any particular robot is reliable.
Safety standards depend on the kind of robot and where it will be used. ISO’s robotics page lists ISO 10218-1 and ISO 10218-2, both published in 2025, as industrial robot safety requirements, alongside standards for collaborative, personal care, and service robots. Check the standard and current regulatory requirements relevant to the robot category and jurisdiction; the ISO robotics sector page is a catalog, not a substitute for the standards’ normative text.
What a reliable design decision looks like
A practical architecture starts by identifying the robot’s task, the information needed to perform and evaluate it, and the responses that must remain available locally. It then assigns nearby coordination and centralized storage or training to edge and cloud resources where their benefits justify the added communication and operational dependencies. Finally, teams validate the integrated system against defined performance measures and applicable safety requirements.
