A wallet does not contain coins: it helps manage the account, while the associated private key provides the authority to sign transactions. Whether you control that key—or rely on an exchange or another custodian—determines who manages access, recovery and much of the security burden.
What does it mean to own cryptocurrency?
On Ethereum, the blockchain records account activity and balances. A wallet is an interface for viewing and interacting with an account; it does not store the underlying assets. The private key associated with the account is used to sign transactions, making control of that key a practical means of authorizing movement of the assets. Ethereum.org’s account documentation explains the relationship between accounts, keys and transactions.

This describes technical control, not a complete legal definition of ownership. Legal treatment can depend on the jurisdiction and the arrangement involved.
What is self-custody?
With self-custody, you control the private keys for your wallet. That gives you direct control over signing transactions, but also makes you responsible for protecting the keys and preserving the recovery information needed to regain access. There may be no provider able to restore access if the key or recovery phrase is lost. Bitcoin.org’s wallet guidance describes the control and backup trade-offs, and Ethereum.org’s FAQ explains the limits of recovery for self-custodied accounts.

Custodial accounts and self-custody compared
| Consideration | Custodial account, such as an exchange | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys? | The provider controls the keys. You depend on it to process access and withdrawal requests. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ | You control the keys and authorize transactions through your wallet. Ethereum.org |
| Where does the security burden sit? | You must trust the provider’s security and ability to honor its policies and obligations. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ | You must protect the keys and backups, and avoid mistakes or scams that expose them. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance |
| What if you lose access? | The provider may offer account-support or recovery processes; access still depends on its policies and ability to provide service. Ethereum.org’s FAQ | Recovery depends on having the relevant private key or recovery phrase. Without it, access may not be recoverable. Ethereum.org’s FAQ |
| Convenience and exposure | The provider manages keys, but you remain dependent on that service for access and withdrawals. | Wallet formats involve different usability and device risks. Bitcoin.org discusses mobile, desktop and hardware-wallet trade-offs. Bitcoin.org |
Neither arrangement is universally safer. Custody places key-management responsibilities with a provider and introduces dependence on that provider. Self-custody removes that particular dependence but makes key security and recovery your responsibility.
Is having my own wallet safer than keeping funds on an exchange?
It depends on which risks you are better equipped to manage. A self-custody wallet can reduce reliance on an exchange to authorize transactions, but a lost phrase, compromised device, exposed key or mistaken transaction can put access at risk. With an exchange, you do not manage the keys directly, but withdrawals and account access depend on the provider’s security, solvency and policies.

Choose based on your ability to protect recovery information and your tolerance for relying on a provider—not on the assumption that one option eliminates risk.
What happens if I lose my seed phrase?
A recovery phrase can restore access to the wallet it represents. If you lose it and also lose access to the wallet or its private key, you may be unable to recover the assets. Ethereum.org says it cannot restore self-custodied funds without the seed phrase or private key. A provider may have support paths for a custodial account, but that is different from recovering a self-custodied wallet. See Ethereum.org’s recovery FAQ.

How to protect keys and recovery information
- Keep the phrase private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to control the associated wallet. Never give it to someone claiming to be support staff or enter it into an untrusted site. Ethereum.org’s security guidance
- Avoid cloud exposure. Ethereum.org warns that screenshots can sync to cloud storage. Bitcoin.org cautions that online backups are vulnerable to theft. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance
- Preserve a protected backup. Keep recovery information somewhere private and protected from theft, damage and unauthorized access. A backup is useful only if it remains available when needed and confidential in the meantime.
- Limit online exposure. Bitcoin.org advises caution with online services that hold funds and recommends keeping only small everyday amounts on an internet-connected phone or computer. Read its security advice.
- Review transactions carefully. Offline keys can reduce exposure to a compromised computer, but they do not remove phishing, unsafe approvals, user error or backup-loss risks. Ethereum.org’s security guidance
What a hardware wallet changes—and what it does not
A hardware wallet is designed to keep private keys offline, which can reduce exposure to a compromised computer. It does not eliminate the need to protect the recovery phrase, check transaction details, or defend against phishing. Losing the device without a usable backup can make funds unrecoverable. Bitcoin.org’s wallet guidance covers these trade-offs.
Before choosing a device, check that it supports the network and assets you use, understand its recovery process, and review its security information and usability. Ethereum.org maintains a directory of wallets for long-term storage; it says the listings are informational, not endorsements, and describes criteria including security review, maintenance, support and Ethereum-focused functionality. Listings and compatibility can change, so verify current details with the provider.
