Crypto mining is the proof-of-work process used by networks such as Bitcoin to confirm transactions and make past records costly to change. Bitcoin miners use specialized hardware to compete for the right to add a block; whether mining at home makes sense depends heavily on electricity, equipment, cooling, and network conditions.
What is crypto mining?
Crypto mining is a way some cryptocurrency networks reach agreement about transactions. Bitcoin uses proof of work: miners gather pending transactions into a candidate block and repeatedly hash its header, seeking a result below the network’s current target. The successful miner broadcasts the block, and other participants check that it follows the rules.

The process helps establish transaction order and confirm payments. Each block refers to the previous one, so rewriting an old transaction would require rebuilding that block and the blocks that followed it, while competing with the network’s ongoing work. The Bitcoin Project explains this confirmation process at How does Bitcoin work?.

1. Miners build a candidate block
Mining software selects eligible transactions and arranges them into a proposed block. The block header contains data that miners can vary as they search for a valid hash.

2. Hardware searches for a qualifying hash
Bitcoin mining is a probability contest, not a riddle whose answer has value outside the network. Mining machines try many possible header values; a hash qualifies if it is below the target set by the network. The Bitcoin developer guide describes ASIC hardware iterating through nonce values and generating corresponding hashes in its Mining guide.
There is no shortcut that guarantees the next block. More attempted hashes improve a miner’s share of the total search effort, but do not guarantee when that miner will find a block. The work is costly to produce and comparatively straightforward for other participants to verify.
3. The network checks and accepts the block
A miner that finds a qualifying hash sends its proposed block to the network. Other participants independently verify the proof of work and the block’s transactions and rules. If valid, the block can extend the chain and its transactions gain confirmation.

Is crypto mining the same as proof of stake?
No. Mining in the Bitcoin sense refers to proof of work, where machines expend computational effort to compete to propose blocks. Proof of stake uses staked tokens as collateral in the validation process rather than relying on the same extensive computational contest. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) says proof-of-stake networks use significantly less computing power and electricity than proof-of-work networks. That is a comparison of consensus mechanisms, not a claim that every network has the same energy sources or environmental effects. See the EIA’s discussion of electricity consumption from U.S. cryptocurrency mining operations.
Ethereum is not a current example of a mineable proof-of-work network: the EIA describes it as using proof of stake in the context reviewed. Ethereum.org’s educational proof-of-work explainer describes the mechanism, but it should not be read as evidence that Ethereum is still mined.
What hardware does Bitcoin mining require?
Bitcoin mining generally requires an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed for the Bitcoin proof-of-work computation. A typical desktop computer is not an equivalent substitute, and a GPU recommendation without qualification can mislead beginners about the relevant Bitcoin hardware category.

Hash rate is the number of hash attempts a machine makes per second. Energy efficiency is often expressed in joules per terahash (J/TH): it indicates how much electricity is needed for a given amount of hashing, and a higher J/TH figure means lower efficiency. Cambridge’s Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index explains this efficiency measure. When comparing machines, look at both hash rate and efficiency rather than treating a larger hash-rate figure alone as proof of better value.
- Compare the purchase price, shipping, availability, warranty, and expected useful life.
- Check the machine’s electrical requirements against the capacity and suitability of the circuit and installation.
- Account for heat, ventilation, cooling, noise, and maintenance.
- Use current vendor specifications and local electricity tariffs; these details vary by model and location.
Can you mine Bitcoin at home?
It is possible to operate mining equipment at home, but owning an ASIC does not establish that it will be practical or profitable. Before buying equipment, assess the full installation and operating constraints, not just the machine’s advertised hash rate.
- Electricity: estimate usage using the machine’s power demand and your applicable tariff, including any time-of-use rates or demand charges.
- Power and installation: verify circuit capacity, wiring, and electrical-code requirements with a qualified professional where needed.
- Heat and ventilation: the equipment releases heat, and cooling or airflow may add to energy use.
- Noise and location: consider whether the sound and heat are acceptable in the intended space.
- Rules and utility terms: check local laws, taxes, electrical codes, and your utility’s conditions, which depend on jurisdiction.
The EIA identifies electricity as the primary operating cost of a cryptocurrency mining facility and notes that equipment and cooling require power. Large mining loads can also affect grid demand. Its facility-level discussion is at Tracking electricity consumption from U.S. cryptocurrency mining operations.

Should you mine solo or join a pool?
Solo and pooled mining differ mainly in how often proceeds arrive and how they are shared. Solo mining gives the miner the proceeds from a block they find, but the payout can be highly variable and the wait may be long. In a pool, participants submit shares that demonstrate contributed work; the pool distributes a portion of rewards and transaction fees according to its payout method and rules.
| Approach | How proceeds work | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Solo mining | The solo miner receives the proceeds from a block they find. | Higher payout variance and potentially long intervals between payments. |
| Pool mining | The pool distributes a portion of block rewards and fees according to its payout method. | Payments may be smaller and more frequent; terms, fees, and payout rules differ by pool. |
Before joining a pool, read its fee schedule, payout minimum, share accounting method, payout rules, and security practices. The Bitcoin developer’s Mining guide explains the distinction between solo and pooled mining.

There is no universal answer. Profit depends on the machine’s cost and efficiency, the electricity price, network difficulty, block subsidy and transaction fees, cooling, maintenance, pool fees, and other operating expenses. Revenue can include newly issued coins and transaction fees, but the amount a particular miner earns is uncertain.

Any mining calculator output is a scenario based on assumptions, not a promise or prediction. A useful estimate should make its assumptions explicit and account for:
- Equipment purchase, shipping, installation, replacement, and financing costs, if applicable.
- Electricity use and the actual tariff, including any applicable demand charges.
- Cooling, ventilation, facility work, maintenance, and pool fees.
- Hash rate and energy efficiency of the equipment.
- Changes in network difficulty, block subsidy, transaction fees, and cryptocurrency price.
Cambridge’s index provides modeled estimates of Bitcoin electricity demand rather than direct meter readings. Its methodology notes that the seven-day moving average reduces short-term hashrate volatility, while monthly totals assume constant 24-hour power use at the daily best-guess demand estimate. Any figure taken from the dynamic index should be reported with its date and methodology; it is not a direct measurement of every miner’s consumption.
