Direct Power On starts a projector when AC power is supplied; it does not mean the projector starts when an HDMI source wakes up. For HDMI-triggered startup, look for a separate Signal Power On or Auto Power On feature. HDMI-CEC is another distinct option for coordinating compatible devices. The exact settings and behavior depend on the projector model.
What Direct Power On does
Direct Power On is an AC-power trigger: when power is applied to the projector, it starts without a separate press of its power button. Epson describes its setting as turning on the projector by plugging it in, while Sony describes starting without entering Standby when the AC cord is connected to an outlet. Which automatic-start feature matches your setup?

These behaviors are not interchangeable. If you want the projector to start when a media player or other source wakes up, Direct Power On alone may not do that. Sony also describes direct power on/off in the context of a whole system switched by a circuit breaker or other means, but that description should not be treated as proof that every projector, source, or installation will coordinate in the same way.

How to enable the setting on your projector
- Identify the exact model. Find its current manufacturer manual or support page; menu names and conditions vary across models.
- Locate Direct Power On. It may appear under Operation, Setup, or Power Settings. Follow the manual’s exact menu path and confirm that the setting is triggered by AC power being applied.
- Choose the right trigger for source-based startup. If you want the projector to respond to an HDMI device, check whether the manual lists Signal Power On or Auto Power On for that input. Verify whether it responds to plugging in a cable or requires a detected video signal.
- Configure CEC separately, if needed. Enable HDMI-CEC on each relevant compatible device, then consult the projector and source instructions for the supported connection and behavior.
- Review shutdown and cooling guidance before switching power. Use the manufacturer’s prescribed shutdown procedure rather than assuming the startup feature makes power interruption safe.
Shut down safely and preserve cooling
Starting automatically when AC power returns is separate from shutting down. Sony warns that unplugging the projector or cutting power at the breaker stops the cooling fan, and advises not to enclose the projector until it has cooled sufficiently. Keep intake and exhaust vents clear, and follow the cooling and shutdown instructions for your own model. See Sony’s guidance.
What to check when automatic startup does not work
- The projector does not start when power is restored: Check that Direct Power On is enabled and that the model’s manual specifies AC power as its trigger.
- The projector starts from AC but not when the source wakes: Direct Power On is not the HDMI trigger. Check for Signal Power On or Auto Power On, and verify the supported port and signal conditions.
- CEC commands do not coordinate power: Confirm that every device in the intended control chain supports CEC and has it enabled. Equipment compatibility and implementation affect behavior.
- A menu label or behavior differs: Consult the manual for the exact model. Manuals may list Direct Power On, Signal Power On, Auto Power Off, or a 12V trigger as separate controls.
Power use and model coverage
Manufacturer documentation cited here establishes how the feature works on the described models, not how common it is across projectors or how much energy any setting consumes. For standby behavior and power use, consult the specifications or manual for the particular projector; there is no reliable cross-model figure established here.
