The official Fallout games covered in Bethesda’s setting guides take place in the United States, across regions from Southern California to the East Coast. Fallout 76 also sends players on Expeditions to Atlantic City, New Jersey, and The Pitt, Pennsylvania. London is part of the community-made Fallout: London mod—not an official Fallout game.
Where each official Fallout game takes place
The settings below identify each game’s principal region and distinguish main maps from named destinations beyond them. They reflect the locations described in Bethesda’s game guide, timeline, and Fallout 76 overview.

| Game | Setting or named location | Geographic area | How it features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fallout | Southern California | West Coast | Main setting; Bethesda dates the story to 2161 and describes the area as the wastes of Southern California. |
| Fallout 2 | Northern California and parts of Oregon | West Coast / Pacific Northwest | The guide names places including San Francisco’s Chinatown, New Reno, and Vault City. |
| Fallout Tactics | Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois | American Midwest | The setting spans these four pre-war states; Bethesda’s timeline describes it broadly as the Midwest. |
| Fallout 3 | Washington, DC, and the Capital Wasteland | East Coast | Main setting. Bethesda Support describes it as “In the Capitol Wasteland in and around Washington, DC.” |
| Fallout: New Vegas | The Mojave Wasteland and New Vegas | Southwestern United States | Main setting, centered on the Mojave and its surviving city. |
| Fallout 4 | Boston and the Commonwealth | East Coast | Main setting. Bethesda also names Far Harbor and Nuka-World as add-ons, but its consulted guide does not specify their state-level geography. |
| Fallout 76 | Appalachia / West Virginia | Appalachia | Main setting. Expeditions add destinations in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and The Pitt, Pennsylvania. |
How the locations fit together
West Coast and Pacific Northwest
The first two games move the series through California: Fallout is set in the south, while Fallout 2 reaches northern California and parts of Oregon. New Vegas shifts the focus to the Mojave Wasteland.

#1 Best Overall
East Coast and Appalachia
Fallout 3 centers on Washington, DC, and the surrounding Capital Wasteland; Fallout 4 uses Boston and the Commonwealth. Fallout 76 is set in Appalachia, identified with present-day West Virginia, and its Expeditions extend to Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Does a Fallout game take place outside the United States?
Among the official game settings identified here, no: they are in the United States. Fallout: London is the notable exception in the wider Fallout community, but it is a community-made Fallout 4 mod, not an official game. Team FOLON’s press kit describes it as “not set in America.” Its setting is London, England.

What this list includes—and what it does not
This is an overview of principal settings and named destinations in Bethesda’s consulted summaries, not a complete inventory of every downloadable-content map, simulated location, or country mentioned in dialogue. For example, Bethesda identifies Fallout 4’s Far Harbor and Nuka-World add-ons but the guide used here does not establish their state-level geography. The locations listed for Fallout 76’s Expeditions are destinations, not replacements for Appalachia as the base game’s setting.
