None of these settings makes you invisible online. Here’s what each feature does and what Google says it may send or save.
What Incognito mode hides—and what it doesn’t
Incognito opens a separate browsing session. While it is active, Chrome temporarily keeps cookies and site data so websites work. After you close all Incognito tabs, Chrome says it removes that session’s site data and does not retain a record of the sites visited in Chrome history.
That is local device privacy, not online anonymity. A later user of your phone may not see the session in Chrome history, but websites you visit and network operators—such as an employer, school, or internet provider—may still observe activity. Google services used on a site may also receive activity as described in Google’s Privacy Policy. Incognito does not promise to hide your IP address.
- Remain on the device: downloaded files and bookmarks you save during an Incognito session remain after it ends.
- Locking tabs: on supported Android configurations, Chrome can lock Incognito tabs when you leave the app. This helps keep other people using your device from opening those tabs; it does not change what websites or networks can observe.
Safe Browsing: more protection can mean more data sent
Chrome’s Safe Browsing setting checks for unsafe sites, downloads, and extensions. Google documents two protection levels that differ in how checks are performed and what information may be sent. Standard Protection is not entirely offline, and Enhanced Protection sends more activity information for real-time analysis.

| Setting | How checks work | Information Google says may be sent |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Protection | Chrome periodically stores recent safety-list data on the device and first checks local information. If it cannot resolve a site locally, it may ask Google to check an obfuscated portion of the URL through a privacy server intended to hide your IP address. Chrome may also report suspicious page behavior or actions; one example is checking whether a newly used site may be phishing when you enter a saved password. | An obfuscated portion of a URL in some checks, and reports about suspicious behavior or actions. Some checks may use visual features of a site. |
| Enhanced Protection | Adds real-time analysis to help identify potentially risky sites that Google has not previously encountered; it can also provide optional extra scans of suspicious downloads. | More activity information, including URLs visited and small samples of page content, downloads, extension activity, and system information. If Chrome detects suspicious behavior, it may send obfuscated or full URLs and pieces of page content directly to Google Safe Browsing. |
To choose a level on Android, open Chrome → More → Settings → Privacy and security → Safe Browsing. Google says turning Safe Browsing off removes protection against sites that steal information or install harmful software, and recommends keeping some protection enabled. The transmission details above describe what Google says may happen under the relevant checks; they do not mean every URL is always sent.
Signing in and syncing Chrome data
You can use Chrome while signed out. Bookmarks, passwords, and other Chrome information can remain on the device. If you sign in, you can choose information to save to your Google Account and make available on other devices signed in to that account.

Depending on your selections, account-saved information can include bookmarks, reading list, passwords, payment information, identity, contact and travel details, and preferences. History and open tabs are optional sync choices. Google’s Chrome sign-in and sync help describes these controls; available linked-services controls may vary by country.
Sync and personalization are separate choices
Saving Chrome history to your account is distinct from Google’s use of account activity for personalization. When Web & App Activity is enabled with the relevant Chrome subsetting, history saved to your Google Account may help personalize Google products, including faster searches and recommendations. You can manage sync selections and Web & App Activity separately.

What a sync passphrase changes
Chrome offers an optional custom passphrase that encrypts certain synced data so Google cannot read that data. Google Wallet payment methods and addresses are not covered by this passphrase, so it is not a blanket encryption setting for every item associated with Chrome.
Passwords and passkeys in Google Password Manager
Google Password Manager can save passwords and passkeys for a Google Account and make them available on devices signed in to that same account. It is an account-connected convenience, not a requirement to use Chrome.

Enterprise administrators may manage the save setting for work users. Google’s Password Manager help explains the available controls.

- Keep a session out of Chrome history on this phone: use Incognito, while remembering that sites and networks may still observe activity.
- Check for unsafe sites with less real-time sharing: use Standard Protection, which relies first on on-device lists but may send limited information for checks.
- Prioritize stronger threat detection: consider Enhanced Protection, which sends more activity information for real-time analysis.
- Keep Chrome information on one device: stay signed out and manage saved information locally.
- Use selected Chrome information across devices: sign in, choose what to sync, and review Web & App Activity separately if account-based personalization matters to you.
- Reduce save and sign-in prompts: adjust Password Manager’s save, passkey-creation, and auto sign-in controls.
Google Chrome Help describes Chrome’s goal this way: “Chrome strives to set safe defaults so you can safely browse the internet using Chrome without being a privacy or security expert.” These controls still involve choices: local privacy, account convenience, and the amount of information used for security checks are separate considerations.
