What ChromeOS Web Apps and Linux App Support Actually Mean

ChromeOS web apps, Linux programs, Android apps and legacy Chrome Apps use different systems. Here’s what each option does and what to check before relying on it.

ChromeOS offers several distinct ways to use software: install a website as a web app, enable a Debian-based Linux environment for compatible Linux programs, or use Android apps on supported Chromebooks. These options are not interchangeable. A web app remains tied to the service’s design, Linux support is optional and hardware-limited, and Android app availability depends on the Chromebook and its administrator.

How the four app categories differ

Type Where it runs What makes it available Key qualification
Web app Through Chrome and the web A supported website can be installed from Chrome for app-like access Offline use and device features vary by service
Linux app Inside ChromeOS’s Debian development environment Linux must be enabled in Settings; the device and policy must allow it Not every desktop Linux program or connected device is supported
Android app Through Google Play on eligible Chromebooks The Chromebook must support the Play Store, and installation must be permitted Some Android apps do not work on some Chromebooks
Legacy Chrome App Through the older Chrome Apps platform Support and administration must permit the legacy app Google has published a staged end-of-support schedule

Google describes Chromebook Linux as “a feature that lets you develop software using your Chromebook.” That framing matters: Linux support is useful for development tools and compatible software, but it is not a promise that a Chromebook behaves like a fully compatible desktop Linux PC. Google Chromebook Help: Set up Linux on your Chromebook.

What installing a web app does—and does not do

A web app is a website built to be used like an app. On a Chromebook, Chrome can give a supported site an app entry in the launcher. Google documents options such as Chrome’s “Install page as app” command or an install control in the address bar. The result is app-like access to the site; it does not convert the service into a conventional desktop program installed locally.

Capabilities depend on how the service is built. Some web apps can store data for offline use, send notifications, access files, or display icon badges. Offline support is not necessarily complete, so check the individual service rather than assuming that installing it makes all of its features available without an internet connection. What Linux app support provides

Linux support is off by default. Enabling it sets up a Debian environment in which you can use a Terminal, run Linux commands, and install tools with APT. Google identifies command-line tools, code editors, and integrated development environments as uses. Setup can take 10 minutes or more, according to Google’s Chromebook Help guidance; this is an estimate for setup, not a performance figure.

Enable Linux

  1. Open Settings on the Chromebook.
  2. Go to About ChromeOS, then Developers.
  3. Choose the Linux development environment setup option and follow the on-screen instructions. When setup finishes, a Terminal opens.

Labels can vary with ChromeOS versions. If the Linux option is absent on a work or school Chromebook, the administrator may have disabled it; ask the administrator rather than assuming the device is unsupported.

Know the limits before relying on it

  • Linux app compatibility is not universal. Google’s user documentation describes a Debian environment and its capabilities, but does not guarantee every Linux application or package will work.
  • Google lists limitations involving cameras, Android emulators, hardware acceleration—including GPU and video decode—and ChromeVox outside the default Terminal app.
  • USB support is limited: Google says Android devices are supported over USB, while other devices are not yet supported.
  • Linux apps share a sandbox with one another. Files shared with Linux are available to all Linux apps, so do not treat each app as individually isolated from other Linux apps.

If Linux or its applications have problems, Google recommends restarting the Chromebook and updating packages. The official setup and troubleshooting guidance is at Set up Linux on your Chromebook.

Android apps and legacy Chrome Apps are separate options

Android apps

Android apps come from Google Play, not from the Linux environment or from installing a website in Chrome. Only some Chromebooks support the Play Store, organizations can restrict installations, and some Android apps are incompatible with particular Chromebooks. Check the exact device and any management rules before counting on a specific app. Google Chromebook Help: Install & use Android apps on your Chromebook.

Legacy Chrome Apps

“Chrome App” is a specific older app category distributed through the Chrome Web Store; it does not mean every app or website opened in Chrome. Google recommends moving away from that legacy platform and has published the following scheduled milestones. Because they are scheduled dates, check Google’s current page for changes.

Scheduled date Milestone
July 2025 Last ChromeOS release scheduled to support user-installed Chrome Apps
July 2026 Last ChromeOS release scheduled for kiosk Chrome Apps
January 2027 Admin-installed Chrome Apps in user sessions scheduled to be disabled by default unless re-enabled by policy
January 2028 Last ChromeOS release scheduled with Chrome Apps
October 2028 Devices on the LTS channel may continue using Chrome Apps until this date

These are Google’s published milestones, not a claim that every legacy app remains usable on every device until the final date. See Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help: End of support for Chrome apps and Google Chrome Web Store Help: Add & open Chrome apps.

Which option should you choose?

  • Choose a web app when the service you need is delivered through a website and its web version has the features you need. Confirm offline behavior separately.
  • Use Linux when you need compatible development tools or Linux software, and your Chromebook and administrator allow the Linux environment.
  • Use an Android app when the Chromebook supports Google Play and the app supports that device.
  • Do not assume a legacy Chrome App is a modern web app. They are separate technologies, and Google’s legacy support schedule is time-limited.

For a Chromebook you already own, check its Settings and the relevant app’s requirements. Before buying one specifically for Linux software, verify support for that exact model and configuration; support should not be assumed across all Chromebooks.
