To choose a gaming CPU, compare benchmark results in the games you play, then weigh the CPU against your graphics card, resolution, other workloads, and the cost of the complete platform. X3D processors can be compelling for gaming-focused builds, but their advantage varies by game; higher core counts matter most when you also do demanding work such as encoding or content creation.
How to choose a gaming CPU for the games you play
Start with performance results that resemble your intended system and use. A processor’s gaming results depend on more than the CPU: the graphics card, memory, resolution, settings, and test conditions all affect FPS and frame times. Intel’s gaming CPU guide recommends comparing benchmarks relevant to the intended use and notes the importance of GPU and RAM.

Look for tests of games you actually play, or representative games using the same game engine and workload. Check the resolution, graphics settings, GPU, memory configuration, and test date alongside the results. A CPU that leads in one benchmark suite may not lead in another set of games.

First determine whether the processor is likely to limit your current or planned system. At higher resolutions, or with a slower graphics card, the GPU can become the performance limit. In that case, CPU differences found in CPU-limited tests may not translate into meaningfully higher frame rates on your system. PC Gamer’s 2026 gaming CPU guide makes this resolution-and-GPU distinction when discussing its recommendations.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
If you play at lower resolutions with a powerful GPU, CPU performance can have more influence on the results. Even then, compare the specific games and test conditions that matter to you rather than relying on a single overall ranking.
Are X3D processors worth it for gaming?
AMD’s X3D processors use 3D V-Cache, a design that adds cache to the processor. AMD’s January 2025 announcement describes its second-generation design as relocating cache below the core complex die and says this enables higher clock speeds, lower temperatures, and better performance than the prior generation. Those are AMD’s claims about its design, not a guarantee of the same result in every game or configuration.

- Pure gaming performance with smooth 100+ FPS in the world's most popular games
- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.4 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 38 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included
The gaming benefit depends on the title and test setup. AMD Performance Labs’ Ryzen 9000 X3D game testing was conducted as of November 2024 at 1080p high settings across named games, using specified systems that included an RTX 4090, 32 GB of DDR5-6000 memory, named motherboards, and specified cooling. Those vendor tests describe that particular game list and configuration; they should not be treated as independent testing or as a universal uplift. Review the test notes in AMD’s January 2025 announcement and its Ryzen desktop processor materials.

How many CPU cores do you need for gaming?
Core count is one useful specification, not a gaming-performance ranking. Games can use multiple cores, but the number of cores alone does not tell you how fast a CPU will run a particular game. Game-specific benchmarks are the practical way to compare gaming performance.
More cores become more valuable when you run demanding work alongside games. Streaming, video encoding, compiling, rendering, and content-creation applications can make higher multi-core capacity a stronger priority. For a gaming-only build, compare FPS and frame-time results first; for a mixed-use PC, include results for the non-gaming applications you rely on. Intel’s guide to choosing a gaming CPU also discusses core count in the context of benchmarks and system components.

Current gaming CPU examples—and why rankings change
As of its 2026 guide, PC Gamer names the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D as its best overall gaming CPU. The same guide identifies the 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D as a high-end option, Ryzen 5 5500 as a budget example, Intel Core Ultra 5 250K Plus as a midrange example, and Ryzen 7 5700X3D as an AM4 upgrade example. These are that publication’s categories and judgments when accessed, not permanent winners or a guarantee that each model is the best value in your region.
Use those models as a starting point for comparison, not as a substitute for checking current independent benchmarks, availability, and local prices. AMD’s January 2025 announcement lists the Ryzen 9 9950X3D at 16 cores and 32 threads with 144 MB total cache, and the Ryzen 9 9900X3D at 12 cores and 24 threads with 140 MB total cache. These specifications apply to those announced models; they should not be generalized to every X3D processor.

Price the whole platform, not just the CPU
A CPU’s purchase price is only part of the cost. For a new build, include a compatible motherboard, memory, and a cooler if the chosen processor or parts do not include one. For an upgrade, count parts you can reuse only after confirming compatibility. Also account for any motherboard, memory, or cooling replacement the change requires. Tom’s Hardware’s CPU buying guide emphasizes whole-system budgeting rather than comparing processor prices in isolation.
Before buying, confirm the exact CPU’s socket and the motherboard manufacturer’s support list, including whether a BIOS update is required. AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series information provides platform context, but the specific board’s CPU-support list is the reference for that board.
Build a like-for-like cost comparison
- CPU: Compare the price of the specific models you would actually consider.
- Motherboard: Include a board that supports the CPU and offers the features you need.
- Memory: Add the memory required for the selected platform, or count compatible memory you already own.
- Cooling: Check whether a suitable cooler is included or must be purchased separately.
- Required replacements: Include any existing components that cannot be reused after the upgrade.
Then compare the complete totals against the performance and workload benefits each option offers. A higher-priced CPU is not automatically the better gaming purchase, particularly when the GPU is expected to limit performance.

A practical decision checklist
- List your games and target resolution. Note the frame rates and settings you care about, and find benchmarks that match them as closely as possible.
- Match the benchmark system to yours. Check the GPU, memory, resolution, settings, and test date before comparing CPU results.
- Decide whether gaming is the only priority. If you stream, encode, render, compile, or create content, include those workloads in the comparison.
- Compare X3D and non-X3D results in your games. Treat vendor testing as vendor testing, and check the games and configuration behind any performance claim.
- Calculate complete platform cost. Add the motherboard, memory, cooler if needed, and every component you must replace.
- Verify upgrade compatibility. Confirm socket, exact CPU support, and BIOS requirements for your motherboard before ordering.
- Recheck current options. Rankings, availability, and prices change; use recent independent benchmarks and local parts pricing for the final decision.
