Chatbot memory and conversation context are different. Context is the information a model can use while responding in one conversation; memory is information a product may save or retrieve to personalize later chats. Starting a new chat usually gives you a fresh thread, but it does not necessarily erase saved memories, chat history, files, or connected sources.
Conversation context is not the same as saved memory
Conversation context
Context is the working information available to a model as it responds in a thread. It can include your messages and other material provided in that interaction. Context is finite: long conversations or large inputs can reach a model’s context limit. OpenAI’s API documentation explains why longer or more complex inputs require attention to context-window limits, but it does not describe a consumer ChatGPT control for resetting a window: OpenAI conversation state documentation.

A long visible transcript does not guarantee that every earlier detail remains equally available to the model. Claude’s help documentation says it may summarize earlier messages as a conversation approaches its context limit: Claude context window help.
Persistent memory
Memory is a product feature that can retain or retrieve selected details across separate chats. It is not the full transcript or an account archive. A new thread changes the current conversation context, but saved memories, custom instructions, linked sources, or other personalization settings may still influence responses.

What a new chat, memory toggle, and deletion actually change
| Action | What it changes | What it does not necessarily change |
|---|---|---|
| Start a new chat | Begins a new ordinary thread with fresh conversational context. | Does not by itself erase saved memory, old chats, custom instructions, files, or connected sources. |
| Turn memory off | Stops or limits future cross-chat personalization according to the service’s controls. | Does not necessarily delete memories already saved or past chats. |
| Delete a saved memory | Removes that saved detail from memory controls. | Does not necessarily delete the chat where the detail was shared or copies elsewhere. |
| Delete a chat | Removes a conversation from the account view and starts the service’s deletion process. | May not remove a separate saved memory, file, or connected-app copy. |
| Archive a chat | Hides it from the regular chat list. | Does not delete it; it remains subject to the same retention rules. |
| Use a temporary or incognito chat | Provides a conversation mode with reduced or no use of persistent memory, depending on the service. | Does not necessarily mean immediate backend erasure or that the chat can never be saved. |
For ChatGPT specifically, OpenAI states: “Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from that chat.” See Memory in ChatGPT.
Reset ChatGPT memory and remove the source conversation
ChatGPT’s settings and available controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Check the labels shown in your account; the path below reflects the documented settings rather than a guarantee that every account has identical options.
Rank #2
Stop future cross-chat personalization
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Review the available memory controls and turn off the feature or reference option you do not want.
Turning off Memory does not delete past chats. If Memory is enabled again later, chats still in history may contribute to new memories, depending on the controls available to your account.
Delete a saved detail and its source
- In the memory controls, delete the relevant saved item, or ask ChatGPT to forget that detail.
- Find and delete the conversation where you originally shared it if you also want the source chat removed.
- Check for other copies that may be relevant, including archived chats, files in Library, and connected apps.
Deleting only one of these does not automatically remove the others. Memory, chat history, files, and connected sources can be separate places where information remains.

Remove information derived from past chats
If your account offers Reference chat history, turning it off schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days, according to OpenAI’s help guidance. The original chats remain unless you delete them separately, and this control does not remove separately saved memories. See OpenAI’s Memory FAQ.
Delete or archive a chat
Deleting a ChatGPT conversation removes it from your account view immediately and schedules system deletion within 30 days, subject to de-identification and legal or security exceptions. Deletion cannot be undone. Archiving hides a chat from the regular sidebar but keeps it under the same retention rules. Details: How chat retention works in ChatGPT.

Choose a temporary conversation
- Start a Temporary Chat. If offered, select the non-personalized temporary option before beginning.
- Use it knowing that temporary chats do not appear in history and do not create or update memory while temporary.
OpenAI says temporary chats may be retained for safety for up to 30 days. Saving a Temporary Chat converts it into a regular chat. See Temporary Chat FAQ.

Keep model-improvement controls separate
Turning off model improvement is a separate data-use choice; it does not delete or hide saved chats. It is not a memory reset. OpenAI explains this setting at Data Controls FAQ.

Reset controls in Gemini and Claude
Gemini
Google documents a past-chat memory toggle under Settings & help > Personal Intelligence. To find or delete prior conversations, use Gemini Apps Activity. Google notes that a deleted chat may take a short time to stop being used for personalization, so do not assume the effect is instantaneous. See Google’s Gemini personalization and activity instructions.
Claude
Claude’s help describes a memory reset that deletes memories and an incognito option for a new chat that will not use or save memory. Feature access and exact controls may vary, so check the current product interface. See Claude memory and chat search help.
Which reset should you choose?
- You only need a clean thread: Start a new chat, but remember that persistent personalization and other sources may still apply.
- You do not want future personalization: Turn off the relevant memory or past-chat reference control; separately remove existing saved details if needed.
- You want a particular fact removed: Delete the saved memory and the originating chat, then check for files or connected sources containing the same information.
- You want a one-off conversation: Use Temporary Chat in ChatGPT or the corresponding incognito/temporary mode in another service, and check whether the service allows saving it.
- You want a conversation gone from the chat list: Delete it, rather than archive it. A disappearance from the list is not the same as immediate erasure from every system.
Retention periods and controls described here are those stated by the services’ official help materials accessed on October 3, 2026. They can change and may differ by account, country, plan, app version, or organization.
