Installing a third-party Android launcher changes the app that controls your Home screen and app-launching interface. Your installed apps, accounts, files, and app data stay on the phone. What changes is the surface you use to reach them: the layout, app drawer, search, gestures, widgets, notification indicators, and some integrations can behave differently. The exact result depends on the launcher, phone manufacturer, Android version, and permissions you grant.
What an Android launcher actually does
Android assigns one app to handle the Home role. When you press the Home button or use the Home gesture, Android sends that request to the app selected as the default Home handler. Android’s platform documentation identifies this role with the CATEGORY_HOME intent category.

A launcher supplies the Home screen, dock, app drawer, and usually the launcher’s own search and customization settings. It does not become your messaging app, browser, camera, or other applications merely because it displays their icons.

The role changes; the apps do not
| Part of the phone | What changes after selecting a third-party launcher | What normally remains unchanged |
|---|---|---|
| Home screen | The new launcher supplies pages, folders, dock, icons, widgets and layout controls. | Your existing apps and their data remain installed. |
| App drawer | The new launcher decides how apps are listed, grouped, hidden or searched. | The underlying applications are still the same packages. |
| Home button or gesture | Home opens the selected launcher. | Back, Recents and in-app navigation still belong to Android and the foreground app, subject to device navigation settings. |
| Widgets | The launcher chooses how widgets are placed, resized and configured. | Widget providers remain part of their original apps. |
| Notifications | Icon dots, badges or notification previews may be presented differently, if the launcher supports them. | Notifications are still generated and managed by Android and the originating apps. |
| System features | Some features require explicit launcher support or the default Home role. | Changing launchers does not by itself change your accounts, files, permissions or app subscriptions. |
What stays on your phone
Choosing a new Home app is not an uninstall operation. The apps shown in the new drawer are the same installed apps that appeared in the previous launcher. Their sign-ins, documents, photos, downloads, saved games and in-app settings are not moved into the launcher.
Removing an icon from a launcher’s Home screen also does not normally uninstall the app. It removes a shortcut or changes the launcher’s arrangement. To delete an application, use Android’s app-info screen or the Play Store’s uninstall command.
The launcher also does not automatically become your browser, dialer, keyboard, lock-screen replacement or notification manager. Some launchers offer companion features, but each is a separate capability with its own permissions and compatibility limits.

Home-screen layout and customization
The most visible change is the arrangement of the Home screen. A launcher can use different grid sizes, icon scaling, page transitions, folders, docks, margins, icon packs, labels and wallpaper treatments. Some let you lock the layout to prevent accidental moves; others expose more or fewer controls.
Widgets can look or behave differently because the launcher controls placement and resizing. A widget still comes from the original app, so an incompatible or missing widget is usually an issue with that widget provider, Android’s permissions or the device—not evidence that the app itself was replaced. Check the launcher’s feature list for widget support and test the widgets you rely on before deleting the old layout.

App drawer, organization and search
The app drawer is a presentation and launch surface. Launchers may use a vertical list, pages, categories, folders, alphabetical sections or a search-first design. They can also offer options to hide apps or show work and personal profiles separately.
Search results are launcher-specific. A launcher may search app names and shortcuts, while another may add contacts, settings or web results. A hidden or locked profile can have additional restrictions. Do not assume that a search box exposes every activity on the device.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Gestures and navigation
Swipe actions, double-tap shortcuts, pinch gestures, edge gestures and custom buttons are implemented by the launcher and by the phone’s system navigation layer. A gesture that worked in the manufacturer’s launcher may be absent, require a different setting, or conflict with Android’s system gestures after you switch.
On gesture-navigation phones, the manufacturer may restrict third-party launchers or provide only partial animation and recents integration. The available behavior varies by model and software build; there is no universal compatibility result. Test Home, Back, Recents, the notification shade and one-handed gestures immediately after switching.
Notification dots and badges
Notification dots, numeric badges and unread indicators are not guaranteed to look the same. A launcher may support Android’s notification-dot system, require notification access for enhanced badges, or omit badges entirely. Existing notifications are not deleted just because the icon presentation changes.

Backup and restore
Launcher settings are often stored separately from Android’s general device backup. A launcher may provide its own export or cloud backup, while another may restore only a basic layout—or nothing—when you move to a new phone. Before a factory reset or phone migration, look for an in-app backup or export command and verify what it includes: icon positions, folders, widgets, wallpapers and launcher settings may be treated separately.

Manufacturer-specific integrations
Phone makers can connect their launcher to features such as device search, feed panels, themed icons, foldable-screen layouts, desktop modes, secure folders or special animations. A third-party launcher may reproduce some of these functions, replace them with its own version, or not support them. The safe assumption is not that an integration will fail, but that support must be checked for the exact launcher, phone model and Android release.
How to install and select a third-party launcher
Menu names differ between Android skins, but the process follows the same sequence.
- Install the launcher from a source you trust and open it once so Android can complete its setup.
- Start the launcher’s onboarding. It may offer to import the current layout, choose a grid, or grant optional permissions. Read each permission request; none should be accepted merely to make the Home role work unless you want the related feature.
- Open the default-app settings. Common paths are Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app, Settings > Home screen > Default launcher, or a similarly named “Home app” entry. The exact label is manufacturer-specific.
- Select the new launcher as the Home app. If Android displays a confirmation dialog, approve it.
- Press Home or swipe up to verify that the new interface appears. Open the drawer, launch several apps, test search and place one important widget.
- Review permissions and battery settings only if the launcher’s documented features need them. Notification access, accessibility access or unrestricted battery use can add functions but also increase the launcher’s control or background activity.
- Back up the new layout using the launcher’s own export or backup tool before making extensive changes.
If your phone keeps asking which Home app to use, the default selection did not stick or a device-management policy is controlling the role. Reopen the Home-app setting, choose one launcher, and restart the phone if the manufacturer’s support instructions recommend it.
Android 15 and Private Space
Android 15 documents a specific integration limit for launcher apps and Private Space. Apps in Private Space become visible to the launcher only when the launcher has been assigned the default launcher role, known in the platform as ROLE_HOME, and handles the required behavior.

A launcher that declares ACCESS_HIDDEN_PROFILES must provide a separate container and support the documented hide, show, lock and unlock operations. When Private Space is locked, its apps must not be visible or discoverable through mechanisms such as launcher search. These requirements apply to the Android 15 behavior documented by Android Developers; they do not mean that every third-party launcher supports Private Space.
If Private Space is missing from your app drawer after a switch, first confirm that the launcher is actually selected as the default Home app. Then check the launcher’s Android 15 compatibility notes. If it does not implement the required hidden-profile behavior, use the phone’s supported launcher or another launcher that explicitly documents the integration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Work profiles, managed users and hidden profiles
Android’s LauncherApps API lets a launcher query launchable activities for a user and associated visible managed profiles. Profile visibility is therefore controlled by Android’s profile APIs, permissions and device policy as well as by the launcher’s own interface.
On a work-managed phone, an administrator can restrict which profile apps appear, whether personal and work apps are separated, and what the launcher may expose. A launcher can offer a separate work section, combine profiles, or omit a profile it cannot access. These outcomes are policy- and implementation-dependent, so a company-managed device should be tested with the organization’s administrator before changing its Home app.

What to compare before choosing between launchers
There is no universal “best” launcher. Compare the functions that matter on your phone rather than relying on screenshots or a generic feature list.
Best Value
| Question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Home layout | Grid limits, folders, docks, icon labels, lockable layouts and import tools. | These determine whether your current arrangement can be recreated. |
| App drawer and search | Sorting, categories, hidden apps, shortcuts, profile separation and search scope. | The drawer is the main route to apps you do not keep on the Home screen. |
| Navigation | Compatibility with gesture navigation, Home, Recents, edge swipes and foldable or tablet modes. | A launcher can look good but still make daily navigation awkward on a particular device. |
| Widgets | Placement, resizing, widget picker behavior and support for the widgets you use. | Widgets are supplied by other apps but arranged by the launcher. |
| Notifications | Notification dots, badges, unread counts and any required notification permission. | Badge behavior is not identical across launchers. |
| Backup | Whether layouts, folders, widgets and settings can be exported and restored. | A layout that cannot be backed up may be lost during a reset or phone change. |
| Android integrations | Private Space on Android 15, work profiles, device search, OEM panels and themed icons. | System and manufacturer features may require specific role handling. |
Troubleshooting after the switch
The old launcher still opens
Return to the Home-app setting and select the new launcher again. If the phone is managed, an administrator policy may prevent changing the Home role. Also check whether a “use by default” prompt was dismissed instead of confirmed.
Home works, but gestures or animations feel wrong
Test the phone’s navigation mode under Settings > System or the manufacturer’s equivalent. Some devices offer separate controls for gesture sensitivity, Home animations or third-party launcher support. If a required gesture is unavailable, restore the manufacturer’s launcher or use the third-party launcher’s documented alternative.
A widget is missing or will not resize
Confirm that the original app is installed and that its widget is available in Android’s widget picker. Add the widget again from the launcher, then check whether the launcher imposes a grid or size limit. Reinstalling the source app is a separate troubleshooting step and can affect that app’s local data, so back it up first.
Apps or work-profile entries are absent
Check the launcher’s hidden-app and profile settings, then verify that the profile is unlocked and permitted by device policy. On Android 15, Private Space visibility additionally depends on the default Home role and hidden-profile handling.
Search does not find something you expect
Search the app drawer by the application’s installed name, check whether the app is hidden, and try Android Settings search separately. Launcher search is not a complete index of every file, contact or activity on the phone.
The layout disappeared after changing phones
Use the old launcher’s export before switching devices when possible. On the new phone, install the same launcher version if available and use its import or restore command. Android’s general backup may not contain the launcher’s full arrangement.
How to return to the manufacturer’s launcher or remove the new one
- Open the phone’s Home app or Default launcher setting.
- Select the manufacturer’s launcher, usually identified as the default or system Home app.
- Press Home and confirm that the original layout and integrations return.
- Only after confirming the switch should you uninstall the third-party launcher. Uninstalling it first can leave Android asking you to choose another Home app.
- If you plan to try it again, export any layout the launcher can save before uninstalling; its local settings may be deleted with the app.
The practical result
A third-party launcher replaces the Home experience, not the applications behind it. You gain a different way to arrange and find apps, with possible changes to widgets, gestures, search, badges, backups and manufacturer features. The decisive checks are the launcher’s support for your phone’s navigation system, the widgets and profiles you use, its backup method, and any Android integration—especially Private Space on Android 15. Treat the Home app as a reversible system-role choice, test the daily functions you depend on, and keep a backup before committing to a new layout.
