If your Android home screen keeps stopping, reloading, or losing its layout, start with a phone restart and available updates. Next force-stop the launcher and clear only its cache. If the problem continues, use Safe Mode to check for a downloaded app conflict. Treat Clear storage/Clear data and a factory reset as later steps because they can remove launcher settings or all phone data.
First identify what is actually failing
“Android launcher keeps crashing” can describe several different problems. The correct fix depends on which one you see:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Launcher-only crash: the Home screen disappears, flashes, or reloads while the rest of the phone remains usable.
- Launcher keeps stopping: an error repeatedly names the Home app or launcher, often after tapping Home.
- Home screen keeps resetting: icons, folders, widgets, or page positions move or vanish after a crash, reboot, or update.
- Whole-device restart or freeze: the phone becomes unresponsive or reboots, not merely the Home screen. That requires broader device troubleshooting.
Before changing anything, note the phone’s manufacturer and model, Android version, and the launcher name shown in Settings > Apps. Menu labels differ by manufacturer; Google explicitly notes that “Settings can vary by phone.” Its Home-screen guidance also warns that available options vary by device (Google’s Home-screen guide).

Use this least-destructive troubleshooting order
Work from reversible checks to disruptive ones. Stop as soon as the launcher behaves normally.
| Action | What it checks or changes | Risk to data or layout | Diagnostic value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart the phone | Reloads Android and the launcher | Very low; unsaved work can be lost | Low, but often fixes a temporary fault |
| Install Android and launcher updates | Replaces known-buggy components when updates exist | Low; review update notes and storage first | Moderate |
| Force-stop the launcher | Ends a stuck launcher process | Low | Moderate |
| Clear launcher cache | Removes temporary files | Low; cache is temporary | Moderate |
| Check free storage | Rules out a device operating with critically little space | None by itself | Moderate |
| Safe Mode | Temporarily disables downloaded apps | Low; some widgets disappear temporarily | High for detecting third-party interference |
| Clear launcher storage/data | Resets the launcher’s saved app data | High for layout and launcher settings; permanent for that app’s data | Moderate |
| Factory reset | Erases the phone and uninstalls apps | Very high; requires backup and setup again | High for separating software setup from hardware, but it is a last resort |
The order matters: restart and update are easy to undo or repeat, while clearing app data and resetting the phone can erase settings or data. Safe Mode is especially useful as a test because it changes which apps run without deleting them. A result there narrows the possibilities but does not name the cause automatically.
1. Restart, then install available updates
Restart normally
Hold the power button and choose Restart (or use the manufacturer’s power menu). Wait until the lock screen appears, unlock the phone, and test Home several times. A restart clears a temporarily hung launcher process without deleting its settings.

Update Android
Open Settings and look for System update, Software update, or a similarly named item. The exact location and wording depend on the phone. Install a pending update only when the battery is adequately charged and the phone has a reliable connection. Restart after installation and test again.
Update the launcher or related system apps
Open Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Manage apps & device, and install available updates. A preinstalled launcher may not appear as an ordinary app; in that case, Android or the manufacturer may deliver its updates through system software instead. Google’s general sequence puts restarting and updating before force-stopping or clearing data (Google’s app-troubleshooting steps).
After an update, test the Home screen before making another change. If an update is still pending, install it through the phone’s normal update channel rather than trying to remove or alter system components. If the launcher is preinstalled and has no separate Play Store update, that alone does not mean it is missing or broken.
2. Force-stop the launcher and clear its cache
Find the launcher’s app page
Open Settings > Apps (sometimes Apps & notifications or Application manager). Use the search box or the three-dot menu to show system apps if necessary. Look for the app named Launcher, Home, or a manufacturer-specific Home app. Do not disable or uninstall a system component unless the phone’s support instructions specifically tell you to.

Force-stop it
Tap the launcher, choose Force stop, and confirm. Press Home or restart the phone so Android starts the launcher again. If the Home screen loads normally, use the phone for a few minutes and open several apps before making another change.

Clear only the cache
On the same screen, open Storage or Storage & cache, then tap Clear cache. Do not select Clear storage, Clear data, or an equivalently named button yet. Restart and check whether the crash or reload returns. Google describes force-stop and cache clearing as general app troubleshooting actions, while noting that menu names vary by phone (official instructions).
Check the result before moving on: press Home repeatedly, leave the phone idle briefly, and see whether the same crash or layout change returns. If force-stopping or clearing cache helps only temporarily, record that rather than repeating the same action over and over; the next useful check is whether a downloaded app is involved.
3. Use Safe Mode to test downloaded apps
Safe Mode starts Android with downloaded apps temporarily turned off. It is a diagnostic, not a permanent operating mode. If the launcher works in Safe Mode but fails during a normal boot, a downloaded app is likely involved; that does not identify the exact app by itself.
Enter Safe Mode
The button combination differs by manufacturer and Android version. Common phones display a power menu, then require touching and holding Power off until a Safe Mode prompt appears; others use a volume key while the phone starts. Use the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming one universal sequence. Google’s Safe Mode guide explains the purpose and the manufacturer variation (Google Android Help).
Test without changing anything
When Safe Mode appears on screen, unlock the phone, press Home repeatedly, open Settings, and let the device sit for several minutes. Some Home-screen widgets are removed temporarily in Safe Mode. If you depend on a widget layout, take a screenshot before entering so you can recreate it later.
Remove likely conflicts one at a time
If the crash stops in Safe Mode, restart normally. Uninstall the most recently added or updated app, then test the launcher. Continue one app at a time, restarting or testing after each removal. Start with apps that draw over other apps, replace navigation or gestures, manage themes, clean memory, or alter the Home screen, but do not assume any one category is guilty. If removing an app solves the issue, check whether its developer has an update before reinstalling.
If the launcher still crashes in Safe Mode, that makes a downloaded-app conflict less likely, but does not prove the launcher or phone hardware is at fault. Continue with the general checks—especially updates and available space—and contact the phone maker if the problem persists. To return to normal operation, restart the phone; Safe Mode is not where downloaded apps are permanently removed.
4. Check free storage before making a destructive change
Open Settings > Storage and review the available space. Google Android Help warns that a phone can begin having problems when less than 10% of storage is free; the page does not state a publication year (Google’s restarting and crashing guidance). This is a general warning signal, not proof that low storage caused your particular launcher failure.

If you are below that threshold, remove or move large videos, downloads, offline maps, and unused apps using Android’s storage tools. Empty a trash or recently deleted folder if your file manager keeps one. Restart after creating a reasonable amount of space, then test the launcher. Avoid deleting unknown system files or folders simply because they are large.
There is no single amount of space in the guidance that guarantees a fix; the useful check is whether the phone is below the 10% warning point and whether freeing space changes the broader symptoms. If the Home screen continues to crash after cleanup, move on rather than assuming storage was the only cause.
5. When the home screen keeps resetting after a crash or update
A layout that looks “reset” is not always data loss. The launcher may still be loading, Android may have switched the selected Home app, or the launcher may have rebuilt a page after an update.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Allow a normal reload
After a crash, wait a minute, unlock the phone, and press Home several times. Restart once more if the screen is empty or icons are still appearing. Do not immediately clear storage again; repeated resets make it harder to tell whether the layout is merely delayed or actually being discarded.
Check the selected Home app
Search Settings for Default apps, Home app, or Default Home. The path and label are manufacturer-specific, and the official Android guidance does not establish one universal menu route. Confirm that the intended launcher is selected. If the phone offers more than one Home app, note which one was active before the problem.
Record and protect the layout
Take screenshots of each Home page and note important widgets, folders, and page order. If the launcher provides its own backup or export feature, use it before clearing storage. A screenshot is only a visual record; it does not restore interactive widgets or app data.
If icons or widgets return after the launcher has finished loading, that points to a delayed reload rather than a reason to wipe data immediately. If the layout remains missing, first confirm that the intended Home app is selected. Since Android’s Home-screen options differ by device, use the phone maker’s model-specific instructions instead of relying on a single menu path written for every Android phone.
6. Understand “Clear cache” versus “Clear storage” or “Clear data”
These controls are not interchangeable:
- Clear cache removes temporary files. It is the lower-risk option and is normally tried first.
- Clear storage or Clear data permanently deletes that app’s stored data. For a launcher, the manufacturer determines what is reset; it may include launcher preferences and the saved arrangement of icons, folders, or widgets. Google’s general instructions do not promise a particular outcome for every launcher (Google’s explanation of cache and storage).
Prepare before clearing launcher data
- Photograph or screenshot every Home page and write down any unusual widget configuration.
- Use the launcher’s backup facility if one exists, and verify where the backup is stored.
- Make sure you know the app accounts and passwords needed to restore widgets or services.
- Return to the launcher’s app page in Settings and confirm that you are choosing Clear storage or Clear data, not merely Clear cache.
Clear data only after the earlier checks
Tap the data-clearing control, confirm the warning, and restart. Expect to rebuild at least part of the Home screen. Do not assume that installed apps, folders, widgets, or placements will all be preserved. If the launcher still crashes immediately after a clean data reset, continue to Safe Mode and support rather than repeatedly wiping the same data.

Clearing launcher data is not the same as uninstalling the apps shown on the Home screen, and it is not the same as factory-resetting the entire phone. However, because the exact launcher-specific effects vary, treat the action as permanent for that app’s saved data. If you cannot identify the launcher with confidence or cannot risk losing its arrangement, pause and ask the manufacturer for model-specific guidance first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Decide whether one app or the phone maker must help
If the launcher works except when a particular app is installed or opened, update or uninstall that app and contact its developer if the failure remains. Google recommends contacting the developer when one app is affected (Google Android Help).
A preinstalled or system launcher may require the phone manufacturer’s support channel. Have the exact model, Android version, launcher name, the date the problem began, and the steps that reproduce it. Tell support whether Safe Mode changes the behavior, whether cache clearing helped, and whether the entire phone also restarts. Those details separate a launcher-specific fault from a wider system problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you contact an app developer, include the app name and version if available, what you were doing when the launcher failed, and whether removing that app changed the behavior. For a phone maker, include the Safe Mode result and whether the issue began after an Android or system update. This lets support focus on the relevant app or device rather than having you repeat steps without knowing what has already been tried.
8. If the whole phone is restarting or freezing
When the phone itself reboots, locks up, or shows problems outside the Home screen, stop treating this as a launcher-only issue. Check for Android updates, review storage, and use Safe Mode as a broader test. Google’s device-crash guidance covers these cases and the conditions for considering a reset (Android device troubleshooting).
- Record whether the failure happens while charging, during a particular app, or after the phone becomes hot.
- Remove recently installed apps only after noting what changed; Safe Mode can help distinguish downloaded-app interference.
- Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, and files before any step that might erase data.
- If crashes continue in Safe Mode and after updates, arrange manufacturer or authorized repair support rather than repeatedly resetting the launcher.
A Home-screen reload by itself is different from a phone-wide reboot or freeze. If you cannot use other apps, Settings, or the lock screen reliably, follow broader device troubleshooting and prioritize a backup over repeated launcher resets.
9. Factory reset: the final software step
A factory data reset erases phone data and uninstalls apps and their associated data. It is not a routine launcher fix. Google recommends backing up first, and notes that an app causing the problem can bring it back if you reinstall it afterward (Google’s factory-reset guidance).

Consider it only after restarting, updating, cache clearing, Safe Mode diagnosis, storage cleanup, and manufacturer or developer support have failed, and after you have ruled out a hardware issue. A reset is most useful when the device is broadly unstable and you can restore it from a verified backup.
Best Value
Prepare and test carefully
- Confirm that your Google or manufacturer backup completed and that you can sign back into required accounts.
- Export files that are not synchronized, including downloads, recordings, and local two-factor-authentication backups.
- Record the phone’s model and network credentials needed during setup.
- Start the reset from the phone’s official Reset options menu, whose location varies by manufacturer.
- After setup, test the Home screen before reinstalling optional apps in batches. Add apps gradually so a returning crash can be traced.
A reset has a much higher cost than clearing a launcher cache: you must restore the phone’s data and reinstall apps. If the original problem was caused by a downloaded app, reinstalling that app can reintroduce the problem. Test the clean setup first and add apps gradually so you can identify a recurrence instead of restoring every possible cause at once.
After the launcher is stable
- Keep Android and the launcher current through normal update channels.
- Maintain more than the minimum free space; Google’s warning threshold is below 10% available storage.
- Keep a screenshot or launcher backup of a carefully arranged Home screen.
- When installing a Home-screen, theme, overlay, cleaner, or gesture app, install one change at a time and test before adding another.
- Save the phone model and the manufacturer’s support page so you can use model-specific Safe Mode and Home-app instructions later.
The practical stopping rule is simple: restart and update first, then force-stop and clear cache; use Safe Mode to identify downloaded-app interference; reserve launcher-data clearing and a factory reset for cases where you have protected the layout and backed up the phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Android launcher keep crashing or stopping?
A temporary launcher fault, a downloaded app conflict, an update, or broader device trouble can produce similar symptoms. Start with a restart and updates, then use Safe Mode to check whether downloaded apps are involved. If the whole phone also freezes or restarts, troubleshoot it as a device-wide problem rather than only a launcher issue.
How do I stop my home screen from resetting?
Wait for the Home screen to finish loading and restart once before making destructive changes. Check that the intended Home app is selected, since that setting and its menu path vary by phone. Save screenshots or use the launcher’s own backup feature if available before clearing its storage.
Will clearing the launcher cache delete my icons or widgets?
Cache clearing removes temporary files. It is different from Clear storage or Clear data, which permanently deletes app data. The exact effects of clearing data depend on the launcher, so protect your layout before using that option.
Does Safe Mode tell me exactly which app is causing the crash?
No. If the launcher works in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is likely involved, but Safe Mode does not identify the specific app. Restart normally and remove recently added apps one at a time, testing after each removal.
Why did my widgets disappear in Safe Mode?
Google notes that some Home-screen widgets are removed temporarily in Safe Mode. Take a screenshot of the layout before entering Safe Mode if you rely on particular widgets, then restart normally to leave Safe Mode.

One-click scans. No signup required.
How much free storage should my Android phone have?
Google Android Help warns that a phone can begin having problems when less than 10% of storage is free. That is a general warning, not proof that low storage caused a particular launcher crash.
Should I factory reset my phone to fix a launcher crash?
Only as a last resort, after less destructive checks and relevant support have failed. A factory reset erases phone data and uninstalls apps and their associated data, so back up first. Reinstalling an app that caused the problem can bring it back.
Do Android launcher troubleshooting steps work the same on every phone?
No. Google says Settings can vary by phone, and Safe Mode entry and Home-screen options also depend on the manufacturer and model. Use the device maker’s instructions for exact menu paths and button steps.
The Bottom Line
For an Android launcher that keeps crashing or a Home screen that keeps resetting, start with a restart and available updates, then force-stop the launcher and clear its cache. Use Safe Mode to test for downloaded-app interference. Protect the layout before clearing launcher data, and back up the phone before considering a factory reset. Exact menus and Safe Mode steps vary by device, so use model-specific instructions when needed.
