An accounts payable (AP) agent with memory can use earlier invoice outcomes and human corrections as context for later invoices. For recurring suppliers, that can change extraction, coding, matching, confidence estimates and exception handling. It does not give the agent reliable judgment just because it has history, and it does not give it authority to release money.
The published evidence is a mix of three things. One is an academic paper on a specific AP system. Another is a Deloitte client case. The third is a vendor page that describes a design and says it is not a shipped AP product. Treat each as an example, not a universal result.

“Memory” can mean three different things
A September 29, 2026 DEV Community post with this exact title frames the idea as an invoice moving through processing, decision, outcome and stored memory, and then informing a future invoice. It contrasts a one-off transaction with a recurring vendor pattern. We could only see the search excerpt, so it supports that framing and nothing more detailed.
In an AP workflow, “remembering” can describe quite different mechanisms:

- Retrieval: the system looks up historical examples, such as past coding for a vendor, when it handles a new invoice.
- Model updates: user corrections become labels, and a model is retrained or tuned later.
- Rule or threshold changes: feedback shifts confidence cut-offs or business rules.
The AAAI paper “AI Driven Accounts Payable Transformation” (2022) describes historical processing data, feedback-informed modules, threshold adjustment and client-specific training. Those are separate mechanisms with different risks, so the first question for any product is which one it uses.
What can change in later invoices
Less repeated investigation
A prior resolution can be the starting point when the same supplier, coding problem or invoice-format quirk returns. Deloitte’s client case says its system folded early learnings into a refresh and adapted to a recurring invoice-formatting error. That is one client, and it does not show that recurring issues resolve themselves in general.

More consistent extraction and coding
Deloitte trained models on the client’s invoice intake process, controls, policies and AP environment. The agents identified invoice fields and made recommendations using manually added codes or edits. The academic system likewise used client-specific data and configurable modules for tasks such as line-item matching and code prediction.

Different confidence and routing
The academic paper describes feedback as a basis for adjusting confidence thresholds, so more invoices go straight to posting as predictions become more confident. A confidence score routes work. It does not prove an invoice is correct. In Deloitte’s case, humans reviewed and verified recommendations, and stakeholders could use scores to decide on further review.

Fewer manual touches, with exceptions kept
Deloitte reports a 92% touchless processing rate for its client and says the team was targeting nearly 99%. The 99% was a target, not a reported result. Deloitte also says humans stay important for outliers.
New maintenance work
The academic paper says maintenance covered new classes, changing rules, threshold adjustments and corrections to predictions reported in audits. Memory needs an owner. Without one, outdated patterns can keep influencing new decisions after a supplier, policy or chart of accounts has changed.

Memory does not authorize payment
Kaia’s accounts payable page describes separate processing, control and treasury roles, with payment release held as a human control. It also says the AP workflow is specified and control-designed, not shipped, and states: “No Accounts Payable benchmark is published here.” Use it as a design reference, not evidence of a working product.

Questions to put to a vendor or internal team
- What records are retained, for how long, and within which entity or vendor boundary?
- Which behavior changes come from retrieval, and which from retraining or policy updates?
- Who can correct a record, and how is the correction validated before it influences later invoices?
- Can an auditor reconstruct the inputs, prior examples, model or rule version, confidence and human approvals behind a decision?
- How are vendor changes, new invoice formats, drift and audit findings handled?
- Which cases always need a human: new vendors, changed bank details, exceptions and payment release?
These are questions, not a claim that every system has these capabilities. The academic paper describes governance monitoring and audit corrections. Deloitte describes confidence scores, human verification and end-to-end audit trails. Kaia describes replayable decision records and segregation of duties, but only as design.
How to compare real options
The evidence here is too thin for a ranked vendor comparison. Compare candidates on these points instead:
- what “memory” technically means in the product;
- the scope and freshness of retained history, including vendor and entity isolation and correction provenance;
- how confidence is calibrated and which cases escalate;
- whether audit records can replay the evidence and rationale;
- controls for segregation of duties, changed vendor or bank data, exceptions and release;
- ERP integration, maintenance burden, and measured results from a comparable deployment.
Treat Kaia’s tenant-isolation and replayable-trace claims as design features until the product ships and is measured.
