What Cerebras Wafer-Scale Engine Chips Do—and How They Differ From GPUs

Cerebras keeps a processed silicon wafer as one AI processor. Here’s how WSE chips differ from GPUs in integration, memory and model communication—and what the comparisons can and can’t prove.

Cerebras Wafer-Scale Engine (WSE) chips are processors designed for AI workloads. Instead of cutting a silicon wafer into the smaller dies used in conventional processors, Cerebras keeps a wafer-sized piece of silicon as one processor and places compute cores, SRAM memory and a communication fabric close together on it. The goal is to reduce the data movement and coordination involved in running large AI models.

The WSE is the chip; CS-3 and CS-4 are complete computer systems built around WSE processors. Their architecture differs from GPU systems, but that does not make one universally faster or better: results depend on the workload, software and system configuration.

What does “wafer-scale” mean?

Processors are typically made on a round silicon wafer, which is then cut into smaller dies. Each die is packaged as an individual chip. Cerebras takes a different approach: it retains the processed wafer as a single, very large processor.

That processor combines many compute cores with on-chip SRAM and a fabric that moves data among parts of the chip. Keeping these elements close together is intended to limit the distance data must travel during computation. It does not eliminate data movement, but changes where and how much communication takes place.

Manufacturing a working processor across a wafer presents a challenge: defects can occur in a large piece of silicon. Cerebras says its WSE design uses redundant compute cores and routing, along with a fail-in-place approach that disables flaws and routes around them. That is the company’s explanation of how it handles defects in wafer-scale manufacturing.

What do WSE chips do?

Cerebras designs WSE processors for AI model training and inference. Training adjusts a model using data; inference runs a trained model to generate predictions or responses. Cerebras’ developer documentation describes support for particular models and cluster configurations, so software and model compatibility should be checked for the workload at hand.

In a conventional multi-GPU system, a large model’s computation or data may be divided across processors, which must coordinate. Cerebras says a WSE can keep a model on one processor. For training across multiple WSE systems, the company describes a data-parallel approach: systems process separate training data rather than splitting the model across WSEs.

Those are architectural options, not guarantees that every model fits or runs efficiently in a particular configuration. Scientific computing is also being explored: Sandia announced a CS-3 cluster deployment for research on large AI models and potential modeling and simulation work. That deployment is an example of intended and investigated use, not evidence that all scientific workloads benefit.

WSE chip names versus Cerebras systems

Product names distinguish the processor from the computer built around it. WSE-3 is the chip inside the CS-3 AI system. Cerebras’ current chip page describes WSE-3 Turbo (WSE-3T) as powering the CS-4 rack-scale system. A system includes more than the processor: it is a complete computing platform with supporting infrastructure.

How a WSE differs from a GPU

A GPU is a packaged processor made from a die cut from a wafer. GPU systems can combine multiple processors, with memory and work distributed among them as needed. A WSE instead integrates compute cores, SRAM and communication fabric on a wafer-sized processor. The practical differences are in integration, memory, and the way a system handles communication—not simply the number of cores.

Listed memory bandwidth 21 PB/s 0.003 PB/s

The figures in this table come from Cerebras’ 2024 filing and are company-published comparisons. The filing describes WSE-3 as having 57 times H100’s chip area, 880 times its on-chip memory and 7,000 times its memory bandwidth. These comparisons are specifically against the H100, not every GPU. Memory categories and measurement scope matter, so the figures should not be treated as a complete comparison of system memory capacity or performance.

Cerebras’ 2024 WSE-3 announcement also lists 4 trillion transistors, 900,000 AI-optimized compute cores, 125 petaflops of peak AI performance, 44 GB of on-chip SRAM and a 5 nm process. These are the company’s stated specifications; peak performance is not a prediction of speed on every model or application.

What performance claims establish—and what they do not

In an August 2024 inference announcement, Cerebras reported 1,800 tokens per second for Llama 3.1 8B and 450 tokens per second for Llama 3.1 70B, and described performance as 20 times faster than NVIDIA GPU-based solutions in hyperscale clouds. The announcement also quoted Artificial Analysis reporting above 1,800 output tokens per second for the 8B model and above 446 for the 70B model in its benchmarks. These are dated results tied to the named models and cited benchmark context, not current service guarantees or results for other configurations.

The available comparisons do not establish a universal WSE-versus-GPU ranking. A meaningful evaluation should match the model, precision, batch size, software versions, system configuration and measurement method. It should also consider latency, throughput, power and facility requirements, and access or pricing—not just processor specifications.

Where Cerebras systems and inference are used

Cerebras announced WSE-3 for AI training and uses it in CS-3. Sandia’s announced CS-3 cluster is intended for research on large AI models and possible modeling and simulation workloads. Cerebras also offers an inference service powered by CS-3/WSE-3; its August 2024 announcement described an API compatible with the OpenAI Chat Completions API. Service features and pricing can change, so check the current service information before relying on a specific capability.

Cerebras has also described an AWS disaggregated inference deployment: Trainium handles prefill, while CS-3 handles decode, with the components connected through AWS networking and made available through Amazon Bedrock. This is Cerebras’ account of that deployment, not a general description of how all inference systems are configured.

How to decide whether the architecture fits

Compare systems using the task you actually need to run. Check whether the model and framework are supported, then compare results under equivalent conditions. A large on-chip memory bandwidth figure or high peak-performance number alone does not tell you how a workload will perform.
