1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOLED burn-in is persistent image retention caused by uneven pixel wear: areas that repeatedly display bright, fixed elements can age differently from the rest of the screen. Image retention is the broader symptom—a previous image remains faintly visible after the picture changes—and it may fade. If the ghost image persists across different content for a long time, burn-in is more likely.
What causes OLED burn-in?
OLED screens use pixels that emit their own light. When parts of the screen repeatedly produce light in the same places, those pixels accumulate use differently from pixels showing changing or darker content. Over time, this uneven wear can leave a persistent difference in brightness or color. The result may resemble a logo, ticker, menu, or other fixed graphic that has appeared frequently in that location.

The important factor is not simply that an image was displayed once, but that bright or otherwise demanding content stays in fixed positions for extended periods or recurs often. A channel logo in a corner, a news banner, a sports score bar, a game’s heads-up display (HUD), a clock, or a static menu can create that pattern. Repeatedly watching the same program or playing a game with an unchanging interface can expose the same regions again and again.
This is cumulative rather than governed by a single universal threshold. There is no established number of hours after which every OLED will burn in, nor a population-wide incidence rate that predicts how often it happens in ordinary homes. The effect depends on the screen, its settings, what it displays, and how frequently and for how long those patterns recur.
Why bright fixed graphics are a concern
Brightness and location matter because the pixels under a persistent graphic are doing a different job from surrounding pixels. Manufacturers specifically identify repeated or prolonged static images as a risk. Samsung’s OLED support guidance names sports, news, and weather logos, banners, icons, and game interfaces. LG’s B3-series documentation also cautions about fixed images and about letterbox or pillarbox bars when they remain on screen for long periods.
Those examples are risk patterns, not a guarantee that any particular logo or show will damage a TV. Nor does a single viewing session establish that burn-in has occurred. The concern is repeated exposure that makes screen use uneven over time.

Image retention and burn-in: what is the difference?
Image retention describes what you see: a faint trace of an earlier picture remains after the content changes. It can be temporary and fade. Burn-in describes a more persistent form of the same visible problem, associated with uneven pixel wear; it remains noticeable over other content. LG USA Support puts it this way: “Burn-in is a form of image retention that lasts much longer, and it’s usually visible even when playing other content.” The wording is from its June 26, 2026 support article, “LG TV – Troubleshooting Image Burn-In.”

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| What you notice | More consistent with temporary retention | More consistent with burn-in |
|---|---|---|
| When it appears | A faint trace follows a recently displayed image. | A fixed pattern remains visible across different content for a long time. |
| What happens after content changes | The trace fades or becomes less visible. | The pattern continues to show over unrelated programs or pictures. |
| What the label tells you | It describes a visible afterimage, not necessarily permanent damage. | It describes lasting uneven wear rather than a brief afterimage. |
The terms are not always used consistently in everyday conversation. People may call any ghost image “burn-in,” while manufacturers may describe a longer-lasting mark as a form of image retention. The useful distinction is whether the effect fades or remains persistent; appearance alone cannot establish the exact condition of the panel.
How to tell whether a ghost image is temporary
Start with observation rather than a maintenance cycle. Change to varied, ordinary content and see whether the trace remains visible. A mark that gradually fades is more consistent with temporary retention. A pattern that persists across unrelated material is more concerning for lasting uneven wear. The distinction may not be obvious immediately, so avoid treating one quick check as a definitive diagnosis.

- Note the pattern and its location. Identify whether it resembles a logo, ticker, menu, game HUD, or another element that has stayed in one part of the screen.
- Switch to different content. Check whether the trace is still visible over unrelated scenes rather than only in the program or screen that displayed the original element.
- Allow normal TV behavior. Use the set normally and let its built-in protection operate as described in the model’s manual. Some TVs perform compensation or pixel-cleaning procedures when switched off, and may need to remain connected to power.
- Reassess instead of repeatedly launching manual refresh. If the mark remains noticeable, consult the exact model’s manual or the manufacturer’s support guidance before starting any manual panel-maintenance procedure.
Do not assume a visible afterimage can be removed by wiping the screen; cleaning the surface does not reverse pixel wear. The evidence here does not establish a universal home test, a guaranteed recovery method, or a repair outcome for a particular panel. If a persistent mark affects viewing, model-specific manufacturer support is the appropriate next step.
Which viewing habits raise the risk?
The common thread is an element that stays in the same screen area for long stretches or returns repeatedly. Examples include:

- Game interfaces such as health bars, maps, score displays, and other fixed HUD elements.
- Menus, icons, clocks, or other static screen graphics left displayed for extended periods.
- Bright still images or repeated content with the same layout.
- Letterbox or pillarbox bars that remain in fixed positions for long periods, a pattern identified in LG B3-series documentation.
These are practical cautions, not a reason to avoid every program, game, or format that contains a fixed element. The cited manufacturer guidance describes prolonged or repeated display as the concern. It does not give a single brightness setting, duration, or viewing schedule that separates safe use from damaging use.

What OLED protection features do—and what they do not promise
Manufacturers build mitigation into some OLED TVs. Depending on the model, features may include automatic pixel cleaning or screen optimization, logo or static-image dimming, pixel shift, screen savers, or controls for OLED pixel brightness. These measures can reduce risk or compensate for panel use, but their names, availability, timing, and behavior differ by model. Their presence is not a promise that burn-in is impossible.
Samsung: Screen Optimization
Samsung’s support guidance says Screen Optimization runs automatically after at least four hours of accumulated use when the TV is turned off. It takes approximately 10–15 minutes, and the TV must remain connected to power. Those details describe the Samsung OLED support guidance cited here; confirm the instructions for the exact model and regional version rather than assuming every Samsung TV behaves identically.
LG: automatic pixel cleaning and picture controls
The LG OLED55B3PSA manual describes automatic pixel cleaning when the TV is off and connected to power. It also identifies options for lowering OLED pixel brightness and increasing logo brightness adjustment. Menu labels and availability can vary, so use the instructions for the specific TV rather than relying on a menu path from another model.

Sony: built-in protection and manual Panel Refresh
The Sony XBR55A8F manual recommends normal power-off, avoiding bright static logos or clocks, and using the TV’s built-in protection. It warns that manual Panel Refresh may affect panel life and advises using it only when retention is very noticeable; “once a year” is given as a reference, not a universal schedule for every Sony OLED.
That warning is model-era guidance, not a current blanket instruction for all Sony sets. Do not start a manual refresh just because a faint afterimage appears. Check the manual for the exact model and follow its directions; a procedure that is appropriate on one model may not apply to another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What controlled burn-in tests can—and cannot—tell you
Long-duration tests show that heavy static exposure can produce permanent retention, but they are not household-life forecasts. RTINGS’ 20/7 OLED-versus-LCD test ran from August 31, 2017, to November 15, 2019, at 20 hours per day, seven days per week. That is an unusually heavy, controlled-use schedule, not a typical viewing pattern.
Best Value
In that test, RTINGS observed cumulative permanent retention from prolonged static-content exposure. Its tested LG B6 showed the red subpixel degrading fastest, followed by green and blue. That observation belongs to that model and test pattern; it should not be treated as a universal ranking for every OLED panel generation.
A separate RTINGS analysis published in 2026 compared tested 2020–2023 OLEDs with the 2017 LG C7 at a 10,500-hour CNN checkpoint. At that checkpoint, the newer tested sets did not consistently show less permanent image retention than the C7 in the earlier test. Both tests displayed CNN exclusively at each TV’s maximum brightness in the recommended SDR mode. The narrow setup matters: it does not show that every modern OLED will burn in at 10,500 hours, that all current models are equally susceptible, or how long a particular TV will last with mixed household viewing.
Taken together, these tests support a limited conclusion: sustained, high-brightness static content can produce lasting uneven wear, and test outcomes depend on the model and exposure conditions. They do not establish a universal burn-in threshold or an ordinary-use lifespan.
How to reduce the chance of uneven wear
You do not need to make every image move constantly. The practical aim is to avoid leaving bright fixed content on screen unnecessarily and to let the TV use its designed safeguards.
- Turn the TV off normally when you are finished instead of leaving a static menu or paused image displayed for long periods.
- Use the model’s screen saver or other automatic protection settings where available, and avoid disabling protection features without a specific reason.
- Allow automatic cleaning or optimization to run as the manual describes; keep the TV connected to power if the instructions require it.
- For repeated static interfaces, such as a game HUD or a persistent channel logo, consider the model’s static-image or logo-dimming settings, if provided.
- Use picture controls such as OLED pixel brightness thoughtfully for the viewing conditions and preferences; LG’s B3 manual lists lower OLED pixel brightness as an available option.
- Check the owner’s manual for your exact model before running any manual panel refresh. Automatic compensation and manual maintenance are not necessarily the same procedure.
There is no defensible universal rule in the cited evidence such as “never watch the same channel for more than a set number of hours.” Risk depends on repeated use patterns and the specific TV. Use the manufacturer’s settings and manual rather than applying a test schedule to everyday viewing.
When to contact the manufacturer
If a mark remains clearly visible over different content, document what it resembles and when it appears, then consult the TV’s model-specific support page or owner’s manual. The sources cited here do not establish a general warranty rule, a universal repair price, or a single remedy for every persistent mark. A service decision depends on the set and its condition, so do not assume that a cleaning cycle, surface cleaner, or generic repair part will solve it.
