What Causes a Stuck Pixel on a Laptop—and Can It Be Fixed?

A stuck pixel usually points to an LCD subpixel fault, not ordinary wear. Learn how to identify one safely and when warranty service or panel replacement may help.

A stuck pixel is usually a tiny hardware fault in an LCD panel: one red, green, or blue subpixel stays bright or dark instead of changing with the image. It is generally not caused by normal laptop use. Cleaning can rule out surface dust, but there is no manufacturer-backed software fix; if the dot is a true panel defect, the practical remedy may be warranty service or a model-compatible display replacement.

What causes a stuck pixel?

An LCD pixel produces color through red, green, and blue subpixels. Each subpixel has a transistor that switches it on or off. If the transistor does not work correctly, the subpixel can remain on and appear bright, or remain off and appear dark. Apple describes this as a possible LCD pixel anomaly and notes that dust or other foreign material can also look like a defect (Apple Support).

Dell says stuck pixels occur during manufacturing and are not caused by how a display is used (Dell Display Pixel Guidelines). That is a general explanation, not proof of the cause of an individual laptop’s mark. A fixed dot alone also does not establish a graphics-card or driver problem; symptoms that flicker, move, or change with content may have another cause.

How to tell a stuck pixel from a dead pixel or dirt

  • Stuck or bright pixel: a fixed point that remains a constant color, which may be white or another color.
  • Dead pixel: a point that appears black because it is off.
  • Dust or a surface mark: a speck that may disappear after gentle cleaning with a lint-free cloth.
  • Material inside the display: a mark that remains beneath the surface; it needs professional assessment rather than scraping or pressing.

To inspect the screen, display solid black and white backgrounds, then red, green, and blue. A bright point tends to stand out on black, a dark point on white, and a faulty subpixel may be easiest to see against one of the matching color screens. If your laptop offers a built-in LCD diagnostic test, use it as well; Dell recommends its diagnostics where available (Dell Support).

Clean only the screen surface gently with a lint-free cloth. Apple advises that surface material can be removed this way, while material trapped within the display should be handled by an authorized service provider or Apple Store (Apple Support). Avoid scraping or applying pressure.

Can a stuck pixel be fixed?

Do not count on a software “pixel fixer” to repair a hardware fault. Dell says software tools may not work and are unsupported; its guidance says a stuck pixel remains stuck until the display is replaced. Dell also warns that pressure-based attempts can damage the panel or internal components and may affect warranty coverage (Dell Support).

If the dot is tolerable, continued use is a reasonable option: Dell says most stuck pixels do not affect usability. If you want it addressed, first establish whether it is actually a pixel defect, then check the warranty and the manufacturer’s policy for your exact laptop. A confirmed panel fault may be addressed through service or display-panel replacement. For laptops, replacement parts must match the exact model and panel specifications; a generic-looking screen is not enough to establish compatibility.

Check the warranty before paying for repair

There is no universal pixel count that guarantees replacement. Policies may distinguish bright from dark defects and may vary by model, resolution, region, and warranty status. Count and note the defect type and location, then consult the policy that applies to the laptop you own.

Dell’s guidance page, modified June 29, 2026, gives these laptop thresholds. They are Dell policy terms, not an industry-wide rule; confirm the current policy for your model before relying on them:

Dell laptop resolution category Bright pixels Dark pixels or combined defects
HD+ (1600 × 900) or higher Zero Up to five
HD (1366 × 768) or lower Up to two Up to five

LG’s laptop guidance, dated November 6, 2025, says defective-pixel policies differ by model and directs owners to its customer center or a service center for inspection (LG Support). For Apple products, Apple recommends examination by an Apple Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider, or Independent Repair Provider; an evaluation may carry a charge. Its cited page covers Apple LCD products released in 2010 and later, so do not apply that guidance automatically to OLED models or other brands (Apple Support).
