What is Capcom’s REX project?
REX is the name Capcom uses for the next generation of its proprietary RE ENGINE development platform. Capcom’s 2025 integrated report says the company plans to build on RE ENGINE in stages, adding new technologies as they develop rather than completely replacing the current engine. Capcom describes RE ENGINE as an internally developed platform used across its game development work.

What does “AI-generation game engine” mean?
A report on Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026 attributes the phrase “AI-generation game engine” to a presentation about the REX project. It signals an ambition to make AI part of the engine’s future, but the report does not identify specific tasks REX will automate or say that the engine will generate complete games.

The wording should not be read as a published feature list. It is also not established as Capcom’s final official English phrasing: the available report does not provide an independently verified English transcript of the presentation. The conference report says the presentation did not disclose a task-by-task automation list or a timetable for implementation in commercial games. Joking Joystick’s conference coverage describes the AI-generation idea as a long-term direction.
Is Capcom already using AI in game development?
Yes, according to Capcom. In an investor-and-analyst dialogue, the company said it already uses AI in RE ENGINE and for quality-control bug checking, contributing to development efficiency. Capcom separately said it is still studying generative AI uses across development processes. Those statements distinguish existing AI use from generative AI applications that remain under consideration. Capcom’s investor-relations dialogue does not specify the AI methods or name the individual who gave the answer.

Is Capcom putting generative AI in its games?
Capcom has not announced that generative AI will appear in a particular game, nor has it said that players will use REX to create content. Its public statement concerns studying potential uses in development processes, while the conference report describes an engine ambition without naming shipped features. It would therefore be premature to conclude that REX is a player-facing game generator or that it will automatically produce finished games.

Capcom says generative AI adoption raises concerns about copyright infringement and data security, as well as training and securing specialist personnel. These are issues the company has named; its available statement does not explain what specific safeguards, models, or training-data policies it may use for REX.

What remains undisclosed about REX?
- Which development tasks, if any, REX will support with generative AI.
- Whether future REX tools will generate assets or content for players, rather than assist developers.
- Which tools or models Capcom may use, and how it will address copyright and data-security concerns.
- When any particular REX component will be used in a production game.
