You can use the Meta Quest 3S as a standalone VR and mixed-reality headset: play compatible games, exercise, explore social experiences, browse, and watch video without a gaming PC. Native Quest apps run on the headset. PC VR is different because a computer runs the game; cloud gaming is a separate streaming option that requires a network connection and supported service access.
What works on Quest 3S without a PC?
Meta describes its VR devices as standalone, meaning they do not require a PC to run native headset apps. The Quest 3S runs the Quest 3 app family, but compatibility does not make every app free or guarantee it is offered in every region. Check each Meta Horizon Store listing for device support, price, online requirements, and age rating. Meta’s Quick start guide states that Meta VR devices are standalone, and its Quest 3S device information describes the headset’s app compatibility.

Play standalone VR games
Choose compatible titles in the Meta Horizon Store and install them directly on the headset. These native apps run on Quest 3S rather than using a gaming PC to render the experience. Depending on the title, you may be able to play solo, join online multiplayer, or use the headset’s room-aware features; check the individual listing for requirements.

Quest 3S uses full-color passthrough to show your surroundings, while mixed-reality apps place digital objects and scenes into that view. Meta says its passthrough system includes depth estimation, allowing physical surfaces to occlude virtual objects in supported experiences. This is not a transparent optical display: the headset presents a camera view of the room with virtual content layered into it. Room-aware games and experiences can use that physical context. Meta’s passthrough documentation explains the feature and its uses.

Exercise, socialize, and explore other activities
The platform supports more than conventional games. Meta identifies fitness and wellness, movement-based apps, sports training, social spaces, live events, creativity, and productivity as possible categories. Search the store for workout, rhythm, sports, or movement experiences, and check the app description for what it actually offers; a headset app is not a guarantee of a particular workout’s effectiveness, calorie accuracy, or health benefit.
Social apps can let you meet people or attend events, while media and creative apps offer other ways to use the headset. Whether an event is live, what moderation is available, and any age or access requirements depend on the specific app. Meta’s platform overview describes these categories.

Watch streaming video or play personal media
Meta’s September 2024 Quest 3S announcement named Prime Video, Twitch, YouTube, and Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) among entertainment options, and described Netflix viewing in a browser Theater View. These are examples from that announcement, not a guarantee of current availability in every country. Check the current app listing, region support, and any subscription or service requirements. Meta’s launch announcement contains the dated examples.
You can also use a compatible video player for personal files. The Meta Horizon Store listing for Finally VR Video Player says it indexes local files and can play media from SMB network drives without internet access. A network drive still needs a compatible source on your network; this offline listing claim should not be assumed to apply to subscription streaming apps.

Browse and use 2D apps
Not every headset activity needs to fill your vision. Meta supports web experiences and 2D app panels alongside immersive VR and mixed reality, so browsing or using a conventional app in a panel is another standalone use. Exact multitasking behavior and service compatibility can depend on current headset software and the app.

There is also a separate question of how an app uses your surroundings. Immersive VR surrounds you with a virtual environment; mixed reality keeps a passthrough view of the room and layers in digital content; a 2D panel presents a conventional app within the headset’s space. These formats describe the experience, not where its computing happens.
