Some toaster ovens also have convection or air-fry modes. What works depends on the food’s size and your model’s settings, accessories, and cookware rules.
What a toaster oven can cook, by mode
A toaster oven can handle many of the same kinds of foods as a full-size oven, provided the food fits and the appliance offers a suitable mode. The examples below are common uses, not a guarantee that every model can accommodate every dish.

Toast and quick snacks
Toast bread and bagels, or heat frozen snacks. Some models combine toast, bake, broil, and air-fry functions; for example, BLACK+DECKER lists pizza and frozen snacks among the uses for its Crisp ’N Bake appliance (BLACK+DECKER product page).
Bake: foods that need to cook through
Bake is suited to foods that need heat throughout. GE’s toaster-oven guidance includes cakes, cookies, muffins, pastries, pies, lasagna, and casseroles. Hamilton Beach’s model 31460 manual also lists foods such as roasts, potatoes, pizza, frozen foods, snacks, and cakes. Treat these as examples: check your oven’s interior dimensions and the dish’s size before cooking.

Broil: quick searing and surface browning
Broiling applies strong heat from above. GE gives steak or fish for quick searing, potatoes or vegetables for crisping, and casseroles for browning as examples. Hamilton Beach’s manual also suggests open-faced sandwiches, baguettes, and crostini. Use the rack position and pan specified in your manual, since broiling equipment and clearances are model-specific.
Convection or air fry, if your model has it
These settings circulate hot air and can help crisp food, but feature names, airflow, accessories, and instructions differ by model. The BLACK+DECKER TO3217SS, for example, includes an air-fry basket and a bake/broil pan; that does not mean other toaster ovens include the same accessories. Follow your appliance’s directions rather than assuming a particular air-fry recipe or adjustment will transfer unchanged.

Reheating leftovers
A toaster oven can reheat a small portion if the manufacturer’s instructions allow it. Heat leftovers to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C), checking with a food thermometer rather than judging by appearance.
Choose the setting for the result you want

Adjustments are not interchangeable between appliances. Hamilton Beach’s model 31460 manual says convection baking may call for a 25°F temperature reduction or a shorter cooking time. GE notes that some roast recipes may need a lower temperature. These are examples of manufacturer guidance for particular models, not rules for all toaster ovens.

Check fit, cookware, and doneness
- Confirm the food fits. Check the oven’s interior capacity, required clearances, and rack positions in its owner’s manual. A dish that fits a full-size oven may not fit a countertop appliance.
- Use cookware approved for your model and mode. The BLACK+DECKER TO3217SS manual permits metal, ovenproof glass, or ceramic bakeware for that model. Do not assume those materials—or the same cookware—are suitable for every toaster oven or every setting.
- Use a thermometer for higher-risk foods. FoodSafety.gov recommends checking internal temperature with a food thermometer. Its safe minimums are 165°F (74°C) for poultry and leftovers, 145°F (63°C) for fish, 145°F (63°C) plus a three-minute rest for whole cuts of pork, and 160°F (71°C) for ground meat and sausage (FoodSafety.gov temperature chart, last reviewed 2024).
- Do not rely on a blanket time conversion. Oster says toaster-oven cooking times are generally shorter than conventional-oven times, but the result varies with the appliance, recipe, food size, and mode. Follow the package and appliance directions, watch the food, and verify safe doneness where applicable.
