How to change the Action button assignment
- Open Settings > Action Button.
- Swipe through the available assignments and stop on the one you want.
- If the assignment has an additional menu, select the option you want. For Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility, you must choose a specific item for the button to work.
- Press and hold the Action button to run the assigned action. For Silent Mode, press and hold it again to switch back.
To set a shortcut specifically, Apple’s Shortcuts guide gives the path as Settings > Action Button > Shortcut > Choose a Shortcut.
Which assignment should you choose?
Pick the task you want to reach quickly and will use often. Silent Mode and Focus are useful as quick toggles; Camera, Translate, or a Shortcut can take you straight to an app or task. Also consider whether an option needs a specific sub-selection or a feature prerequisite: Visual Intelligence requires Apple Intelligence, while Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility need an item selected during setup.

Which iPhones have an Action button?
The Action button replaces the Ring/Silent switch on supported iPhone models; it is not present on every iPhone. Apple’s Action button overview identifies iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 15 Pro models as having it. Check the specifications for your exact model rather than assuming it is supported.
