Someone who has your phone number can contact or target you, and may use it as an account identifier or recovery route. The number alone does not prove they can access your accounts. The more serious risk is a SIM swap or number transfer: if a criminal convinces your carrier to move your number to a SIM or account they control, they may receive your calls and texts, including SMS verification codes. The FTC’s SIM-swap guidance and an FCC notice explain that distinction.
What can someone do with your phone number?
Contact you or send deceptive messages
A person with your number can call or text it, including with unwanted or deceptive messages. Caller ID is not reliable proof of who placed a call: numbers can be spoofed. The FCC’s unwanted-calls and texts guidance includes a complaint path for people whose own numbers are spoofed, blocked, or marked as potential spam.

Use it to target account recovery or impersonation attempts
A phone number may serve as an account identifier or a way to reach you during account recovery. In combination with other personal details, it may also make an impersonation attempt more convincing. The FTC warns that information shared publicly can help an identity thief answer security questions; avoid answers that can be found online or in public records. Find information through lookup services?
There is no reliable, universal answer to what a stranger can discover from a particular number through reverse-lookup sites or data brokers. What appears can depend on the number’s history and the services consulted. Do not assume that having your number automatically reveals your name, address, location, or accounts.

Can someone hack you with just your phone number?
Possessing the number alone is not the same as having access to your phone or accounts. The account-takeover concern emphasized by the FTC and FCC is that an attacker first gets the carrier to move your number to a SIM or account they control. That is called a SIM swap or, when moved to a different carrier, port-out fraud. After a successful transfer, the attacker may receive your calls and texts and use SMS codes to attempt access to accounts that rely on them. The FCC says hundreds of customer complaints to the FCC and FTC in 2023 concerned SIM-swap and port-out fraud; it does not give a precise count in the cited notice.
A phone number can therefore be a useful target or recovery route, but an attacker generally needs an additional step to intercept its messages: taking control of the number through the carrier. A code sent by SMS is only as secure as continued control of the number receiving it.

How to protect your number and accounts
Secure the cellular account
- Set a PIN or password on your cellular account, as the FTC recommends.
- Ask your provider what safeguards it offers against unauthorized SIM changes and number transfers, and whether it can alert you to those changes. Feature names and availability vary by provider; the FCC’s rules and notice discuss protections but do not establish that every feature is available from every carrier.
- Avoid posting your full name, address, and phone number together on public sites when it is not necessary.
Choose authentication that does not depend on SMS
For sensitive or financial accounts, use an authentication app or security key instead of SMS when the account supports it. An authentication app or a FIDO-compatible security key can provide an alternative to codes delivered to your number, but each service must support the method. A security key is optional and protects only compatible accounts; it does not secure your carrier account or prevent a SIM swap by itself. The FTC recommends considering an app or security key if you are concerned about SIM swapping.
Make account recovery harder to guess
- Use unique, hard-to-guess answers for security questions. Avoid answers available online or in public records.
- If a service requires a weak security question, treat its answer like a unique password rather than a fact about you.
- Use a password manager or another safe method to keep track of unique account credentials, particularly for email and financial accounts that can reset other passwords.
The FTC’s personal-information guidance explains why publicly available details can put security-question answers at risk.

Protect the handset itself
Lock your phone with a passcode, install operating-system and app updates, back up your data, and enable the device’s find, lock, or erase tools. These steps help protect the handset and its data if it is lost or compromised. They do not stop a carrier-level transfer of your number. See the FTC’s phone-security advice.
Verify unexpected requests independently
If a caller says an account is at risk, hang up and contact the organization through a known official app, website, or phone number. Do not share verification codes, account details, or personal information with an unexpected caller, and do not grant remote access to your phone or computer. The FTC’s January 2026 guidance on unexpected calls makes the same recommendation.

What to do if your number may have been hijacked
Sudden loss of calls, texts, and mobile data, or an unexpected SIM activation or transfer alert, can signal a SIM swap or port-out. Treat it as urgent: contact your wireless provider promptly and report an unauthorized change.

- Contact your carrier immediately. Use a contact method you can still access, such as the provider’s official website or a store, and ask it to restore control of your number and report the unauthorized SIM change or transfer.
- Secure accounts after regaining the number. Change passwords on affected accounts, starting with email and financial accounts. Where supported, replace SMS verification with an authentication app or security key.
- Review financial activity. Check bank, credit-card, and other financial accounts for unauthorized charges or changes, and report suspicious activity to the relevant institution.
- Follow identity-theft recovery steps if information was misused. The FTC directs people to IdentityTheft.gov and its recovery guidance for tailored next steps.
