Gemini Apps can help brainstorm, plan, summarize, draft and revise text, and analyze some files and images. They can also generate certain supported file formats. Use Gemini for a starting point or explanation, then check important facts and results: Google warns that Gemini can make mistakes and says not to rely on it for professional advice. Available features vary by account, device, location and app surface.
What can Gemini do?
Google presents Gemini Apps as an assistant for creating and working with information, not as a guarantee that every answer or output is correct. Depending on what is available to your account and where you use the app, it can help with tasks such as:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Generate and revise text: brainstorm ideas, create an outline, draft a message, or rework supplied writing.
- Plan and explain: develop a plan, explain a topic, or help make a learning plan.
- Summarize and analyze: summarize information and work with some files or images you provide.
- Help with charts and files: create charts or generate supported file formats, including Docs, Sheets, PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, LaTeX, TXT, RTF and Markdown.
- Assist with coding: help explain or debug code, subject to the limits of the particular model and feature.
These are supported kinds of assistance, not promises of a correct result or identical access for every user. Google’s examples and availability details are in its Gemini Apps help documentation.

Gemini is most useful when a quick first pass is valuable and you can review the output. It can give you material to edit rather than a finished answer to accept without checking.
#1 Best Overall
- Use it to get an initial draft, outline, idea list or plan.
- Ask it to explain or summarize material when you can compare the answer with the original.
- Use it to transform information you provide, such as turning notes into a draft or analyzing an uploaded file, when the relevant feature is available.
- For factual research, request sources where the app can provide them, then open and verify those sources independently.
- For math, code and consequential decisions, check the result using an authoritative source, appropriate testing or a qualified professional.
Clear instructions can make your request easier to interpret, but they do not guarantee accuracy. Google describes Gemini as designed to follow instructions and customizations within limits, and acknowledges inaccurate responses as a challenge, including with unusual or adversarial prompts. See Google’s Gemini app approach.
What can’t Gemini do reliably?
Guarantee that an answer is true
Gemini can make mistakes. Google explicitly advises users to double-check responses and not rely on Gemini Apps for professional advice. Treat a confident-sounding answer as something to verify, especially when an error could affect health, finances, safety, legal rights or other important decisions.

Work the same way for every account or device
Access depends on factors including whether you are signed in, account type, device, location, activity settings and integrations. Google says signed-out use is generally limited to text interactions; capabilities such as image generation, Gems, file uploads and connected services may require sign-in. Some functions can also depend on Keep Activity or whether a connected service is set up. Check the current Gemini Apps availability and account guidance for your setup.

Instructions and customizations can guide Gemini, but they do not remove its limits or make its output dependable by themselves. Specific, clear prompts help communicate what you want; review the response rather than assuming the wording of the prompt guarantees a correct result.

Apply one tool’s limitation to all Gemini features
Some constraints belong to a particular tool, not Gemini Apps as a whole. For example, Google’s Gemini API code-execution documentation says that this API tool runs code but cannot return other artifacts such as media files. Google also notes that enabling it may reduce quality in other output areas and that effectiveness varies by model. Those details describe API code execution; they do not mean Gemini Apps cannot generate supported files.
Which Gemini model should you choose?
If the app offers model choices, Google describes them as trade-offs between speed and capability. The descriptions below are Google’s product guidance, not independent comparative test results; names, access and features can change.
Rank #4
| Model option | Google’s description | Consider it for |
|---|---|---|
| Flash-Lite | Efficiency and speed for everyday work | Routine tasks where a quick response is the priority |
| Flash | A balance of speed and reasoning across a range of problem types | General tasks when you want a middle ground |
| Pro | More capable for complex math and coding, with deeper multimodal understanding; responses generally take longer | More demanding reasoning, coding or multimodal tasks when available |
Choosing a more capable option does not remove the need to check consequential output. For current descriptions and eligibility, consult Google’s Gemini Apps help page.

Before relying on a capability, check whether it is available in your specific setup. Personal, work and school accounts may have different access; features can vary between web and mobile or other surfaces; and some tasks require sign-in, Keep Activity or a connected service. A feature appearing in Google’s documentation does not establish that it is enabled for every account or location.

Custom workflows are also changing. Google’s September 30, 2026 Workspace transition notice says rollout of skills begins in Workspace on October 5 for Rapid Release domains and October 19 for Scheduled Release domains. Gemini app rollout begins October 13, with completion expected by mid-November. The notice says Gems will be phased out no sooner than March 1, 2027 for business and enterprise, and no sooner than June 1, 2027 for education. The Workspace and Gemini app surfaces do not yet sync skills, so a workflow may need to be recreated for use across both. These are announced rollout dates, not a guarantee that a feature is already available to a particular user; check Google’s current Workspace transition information.
