The Alexa app adds device management and controls from a phone. What works depends on your Echo model, compatible equipment, account, subscriptions and country, so an Echo does not automatically provide every Alexa feature.
How Alexa works on an Echo
An Echo listens locally for its configured wake word using acoustic-pattern detection. When Alexa detects the wake word, or you press the device’s action button, the request recording is streamed to Amazon’s cloud for processing. Echo indicators show when audio is being recorded and sent. Alexa then returns an answer or performs the requested action.

This cloud-based design explains both Alexa’s broad capabilities and its requirements: many requests need an internet connection, an Amazon account and any service-specific account or subscription. Features, supported languages, communication functions and smart-home compatibility vary by region and device generation.

What you can ask Alexa to do every day
Answer questions and provide information
Alexa handles spoken questions and short requests such as weather forecasts, general information, news briefings and traffic reports. The response may depend on your location, language, account settings and the information source available in your market. Treat an answer as a convenience, not as a guarantee that every topic is current or complete.
Play entertainment and content
You can ask an Echo to play music and other supported audio content, request news, or start an available service. Whether a particular catalog, station or provider works depends on the provider’s Alexa integration, your country and your account or subscription. Do not assume that a service is included with the Echo itself.
Use skills
Skills are voice-enabled extensions that add activities, games, information and services. After a skill is available in your marketplace and enabled for your account, you can invoke it by voice. Skills can therefore make two otherwise identical Echo devices behave differently, depending on what has been enabled and which services are supported. Amazon describes the skills platform in its Alexa overview.
Set alarms, timers and reminders
Alexa can set and manage alarms and timers, and create reminders. The Alexa app shows upcoming reminders, alarms and active timers, which is useful when you need to check or cancel something without speaking to the speaker.
Routines: combine several actions into one command
A routine is a shortcut that links a trigger to one or more actions. Amazon describes routines as “shortcuts for Alexa,” grouping actions so you do not have to ask for each one individually. A single routine might turn on lights, provide a briefing and play music after one spoken phrase.

Available routine triggers
- A spoken voice command.
- A time of day.
- Sound detection.
- Presence detection.
- An alarm event.
- Visual ID-based personal presence detection, where supported.
Examples of routine actions
- Start a skill.
- Give a briefing or traffic report.
- Place a call.
- Control compatible Fire TV or security-system functions.
- Play music.
- Adjust dimmable lights.
- Switch compatible smart-home devices on or off.
Amazon says an account can have up to 200 routines at a time. That is an account limit stated by Amazon, not an independent test. Routine behavior is not identical across Echo models. Amazon specifically names Echo Dot (5th Generation) and Echo Pop as models that can use indoor-temperature triggers to turn compatible smart-home devices on. Do not assume that every Echo has the same temperature or presence sensors.
How to build a routine
- Open the Alexa app and go to its Routines area.
- Create a new routine and choose a trigger, such as a phrase, schedule, sound or presence event available to your device.
- Add the actions in the order you want Alexa to perform them.
- Save the routine, then test it with the selected trigger.
- If an action fails, check that the relevant skill, account, device and permission are still connected.
The exact triggers and actions shown in the app depend on your Echo model, connected devices and region.
Control compatible smart-home equipment
Alexa can control or report the status of compatible lights, switches, plugs, thermostats, cameras, locks, televisions, printers, kitchen appliances and robot vacuums. Typical requests include turning a light on, checking a device’s status, changing a thermostat setting or viewing a supported camera feed.
Connection can use a smart-home skill, an Echo’s built-in hub, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or setup completed in the Alexa app. Amazon cautions that not every smart-home product is supported on every Alexa device. Verify compatibility for the exact accessory and Echo model before buying or configuring equipment.
| Device category | Typical Alexa use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Lights, plugs and switches | Turn on or off, group devices, and adjust compatible dimmable lights. | Supported skill, wireless connection and whether dimming or grouping is available. |
| Thermostats | Check or change temperature and use temperature-related routines where supported. | Thermostat integration and whether your Echo has the required sensor or hub capability. |
| Cameras and locks | Check status and use supported viewing or control commands. | Account permissions, model support and security settings. |
| Televisions and Fire TV | Use supported playback or control actions and include them in routines. | Compatible device, linked account and available commands. |
| Appliances, printers and robot vacuums | Start supported actions or request status. | Manufacturer skill, device model and regional availability. |

Calls, messages, Drop In and announcements
Alexa calling and messaging
Alexa Communication supports calls to Alexa contacts and groups, plus Alexa-to-Alexa messages from a compatible mobile app. Amazon Customer Service says calls to mobile and landline numbers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Mexico can be made at no additional cost. Amazon’s developer guidance separately describes free calls to most numbers in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Because those pages describe different coverage, treat calling availability as market- and feature-specific rather than global.

An Echo should not be treated as an emergency telephone.
Drop In
Drop In lets you connect between supported Alexa devices, subject to device support and communication permissions. It is designed for approved contacts or devices rather than unrestricted public calling, so review who is allowed to connect before enabling it.
Announcements and video calls
Announcements broadcast a spoken message to supported Alexa-enabled devices. Video calls are available on supported Echo Show and Echo Spot devices; a speaker-only Echo cannot provide a video screen. Amazon’s device communication guidance describes these functions and their support caveats. Amazon’s customer-service explanation of calling and messaging is available at this communication guide.
The Alexa app is a control center, not just setup software
The mobile app lets you manage Echo devices, access Alexa, review reminders and alarms, inspect active timers, use Drop In, control compatible smart-home equipment, play music across Alexa devices and enable skills. It is also useful when speaking to a distant Echo is inconvenient or when you need a visual list of pending timers and reminders.

Because the app and Echo share the same account-based setup, a feature visible in the app may still require a compatible device, an enabled skill, a linked service or a supported country. The app cannot make unsupported hardware perform a function it does not have.
Alexa+ and newer conversational capabilities
Amazon’s Alexa site describes Alexa+ as a more conversational experience that can change topics while retaining context, provide customized answers, help with planning and checklists, and turn knowledge into actions such as scheduling or meal preparation. Amazon also describes continuing a conversation across a browser, the Alexa app, Echo, Fire TV and other compatible devices.
These are Amazon-described Alexa+ capabilities, not a guarantee that every Echo receives them. Check current account, region and model eligibility before relying on Alexa+ features; the cited Alexa page does not provide a complete Echo-by-Echo eligibility matrix. Details are on Amazon’s Alexa page.

Amazon says that after Alexa detects the wake word or a button activation, the request recording is sent to Amazon’s cloud for processing. Echo indicators signal when recording is being streamed. Amazon also says Alexa may receive information from connected smart-home devices, including status and usage history.

- Delete recordings or transcripts you no longer want retained.
- Check which contacts and devices can use Drop In or communication features.
- Review permissions for camera, lock and other sensitive smart-home skills.
- Use the Echo’s microphone-off control when you want to prevent voice capture from the device.
Why a capability may not work
Most failures come from a mismatch between the request and the setup rather than from Alexa lacking the feature entirely. Check these conditions in order:
- Model: Screen, camera, hub, temperature sensing and other hardware differ by Echo generation.
- Compatibility: Confirm that the accessory and its exact model are supported on your Echo.
- Skill or account: Enable the required skill and link the correct service account.
- Region: Calling, content, skills and Alexa+ availability can vary by country.
- Subscription: A voice command may require a paid plan from the content or device provider.
- Network: Cloud requests and many smart-home actions require the Echo and accessory to be online.
- Permissions: Communication, camera, lock and presence features may be blocked by account settings.
If a routine stops working, open it in the Alexa app, identify the failed action, reconnect the relevant device or skill, and run the routine again. If a command works on one Echo but not another, compare their model capabilities and device assignments before changing the spoken command.
What an Echo can realistically replace
An Echo is best understood as a voice interface that connects several services, not as a self-contained appliance that includes every service. It can replace reaching for a phone for quick information, alarms, timers, reminders, music controls and supported home commands. With routines, it can coordinate several compatible actions. With communications, it can act as an intercom or calling endpoint where the account, contacts, devices and country support the feature.

Examples of useful requests
- “Alexa, set a 12-minute timer.”
- “Alexa, remind me at 6 p.m. to call home.”
- “Alexa, what’s the weather?”
- “Alexa, play my music.”
- “Alexa, turn on the living-room lights.”
- “Alexa, start my evening routine.”
- “Alexa, announce that dinner is ready.”
- “Alexa, call [an approved contact].”
Each example assumes the relevant service, contact, device, permission and regional support are configured. Alexa’s actual response can therefore differ between households even when the spoken words are identical.
