What Can a Raspberry Pi Replace—and What Still Requires a Paid Service?

A Raspberry Pi can host a desktop, smart-home tools, ad blocking, and a personal-media server. It cannot provide paid catalogs or hosted services you do not run yourself.

A Raspberry Pi can run useful local alternatives to a basic desktop, a smart-home hub, network-level ad blocking, and a personal-media server. It cannot replace access to a commercial streaming catalog such as Netflix: the service requires an active membership to play its content. The dividing line is whether you need software running on hardware you control, or access to a company’s hosted service, licensed content, or other paid offering.

What a Raspberry Pi can replace

A Pi is a small computer, not a bundle of free replacements for every service you use. With the right software and setup, it can take over specific jobs on your own network.

A basic desktop computer

Raspberry Pi OS is the official free operating system, and Raspberry Pi describes it as including a familiar desktop, web browser, word processor, and spreadsheet application. That can be enough for light browsing and everyday documents. It is not evidence that a Pi matches a faster computer for demanding workloads; suitability depends on what you do. See Raspberry Pi OS documentation and Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guide.

A smart-home hub or some platform functions

Home Assistant can run on a Raspberry Pi and support locally run automations without a subscription. The project’s FAQ states, “Yes. Home Assistant is free and open source.” Home Assistant Cloud is optional; it provides hosted conveniences such as easier remote access and integrations with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. The software can replace some hub or platform functions, but Cloud features are not the same as the locally run core. Home Assistant recommends Home Assistant OS for most users and provides images for Pi 4 and Pi 5. See Home Assistant’s free-software FAQ and Raspberry Pi installation guide.

Network-level ad blocking

Pi-hole can act as a DNS sinkhole, blocking some unwanted requests for devices on a network without installing blocking software on each one. Raspberry Pi presents it as a way to block ads across a home network, and Pi-hole documents its operation at its official site. DNS blocking is not a guarantee that every ad or sponsored placement disappears, and it does not grant access to paid services or content.

A personal-media server

Jellyfin can organize and stream media you already have, including movies, shows, music, books, and photos. The project says its server and official clients are free to download and that it does not run servers for users. It can replace the library-management and playback-server role when you have media you can lawfully access; it does not provide a commercial streaming catalog. See Jellyfin.

Some file or photo workflows

A Pi can be part of a self-hosted storage or photo project, but that possibility should not be mistaken for a proven, supported one-for-one replacement for a particular cloud storage or photo plan. Capacity, remote access, backup, recovery, and ongoing maintenance all affect whether such a project fits your needs.

Which subscriptions still require a paid service?

A self-hosted server supplies software running on your hardware; it does not supply a company’s hosted service, licensed catalog, cloud processing, or proprietary features. Netflix, for example, describes itself as a subscription-based streaming service and says an active membership is required to play its content on supported versions, including mobile, TV, and browser. A Pi running Jellyfin can serve your personal library, but it cannot provide Netflix’s catalog. See Netflix’s membership requirement and Netflix’s service description.

For other services, check the provider’s own terms before assuming a subscription is unavoidable. A local alternative may handle one part of a service—such as storage, automation, or playback—while hosted access, licensed content, or another proprietary feature remains tied to the provider’s offering. Netflix’s plans and prices vary by country; consult its country-specific plans and pricing page for current information rather than relying on a general price.

What a Raspberry Pi setup takes

Requirements depend on the project, so treat the following as recommendations for the named Home Assistant setup and Raspberry Pi guidance, not universal minimums for every Pi use.

  • Home Assistant on a Pi: Home Assistant’s guide calls for a Pi 4 or Pi 5 with at least 2 GB RAM, a microSD card of at least 32 GB, and a suitable power supply. It recommends Ethernet for reliability and describes A2 application-class storage as preferable for application workloads. See the installation guide.
  • Pi 5 memory choices: Raspberry Pi setup material lists 2, 4, 8, and 16 GB RAM variants and recommends at least a 32 GB microSD card for setup. See Raspberry Pi’s setup guide.
  • Storage expansion: A compatible USB SSD is an option if a project needs more storage than a boot microSD card provides. Confirm compatibility and capacity for the specific workload.

Any self-hosted project also means paying for the hardware and storage, using electricity, configuring the software, and maintaining it. Backups and recovery planning matter especially when the Pi holds files or runs services you rely on.

How to decide whether self-hosting is worth it

Compare the exact job you want to replace, not just the monthly fee. A locally hosted option can offer more control over where data lives, but it puts setup and upkeep in your hands. A paid hosted service may offer easier remote access, a licensed catalog, or less maintenance. There is no universal cost break-even point established for Pi projects; the result depends on hardware, storage, power, time, and the features you need.
