Before switching from a petrol car to an electric car, check three things: whether the EV’s real-world range suits your regular journeys, whether you can charge it reliably, and whether the full ownership cost works for you. If you’re considering a used EV, also verify its battery condition, warranty, charging capability and service history. The right answer depends on your routes, local electricity prices and the exact vehicle.

1. Will the EV’s range cover your regular driving?

Start with your actual journeys, not an assumed average. Note a typical week of driving and your longest regular trip, including the distance, usual speed and where you could stop to charge. Compare those needs with the range of the specific model and market you’re considering.

A vehicle’s stated range is not a guarantee for every trip. Weather, speed, hills, heating or cooling, passenger and cargo load, and battery condition can affect the distance available. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that extreme temperatures can affect EV performance and that thermal management uses some battery energy (NHTSA guidance on EV range and temperature).

If your longest regular trip exceeds the range you’re comfortable using, check that compatible charging is available along the route and allow for charging stops. The US Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center recommends beginning with daily driving and asking whether compatible public chargers are on the routes you plan to use (Alternative Fuels Data Center buyer guidance).

  • Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
  • Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.

2. Where will you charge?

List the places where the car will usually be parked for several hours: home, work or another regular destination. Charging access often matters as much as range, because a car that can replenish its battery while parked may fit your routine better than one that requires special trips to a charger.

Charging at home

If you have off-street parking, check whether you have permission to install a charger and whether the property’s electrical supply can support it. Ask an installer or electrical contractor to assess the site and provide an estimate; a switchboard or supply-connection upgrade may be needed. Australian government guidance flags these potential upgrades, while the US Department of Energy recommends getting estimates from both the utility and an electrical contractor before installation (Australian home-charging guidance; US Department of Energy cost guidance).

Charging without a driveway

If you rely on public or workplace charging, check compatible chargers near ordinary destinations as well as on longer routes. Confirm connector compatibility for the exact vehicle specification in your country, how you’ll pay, and whether chargers require an app or account. Do not assume that a connector or charging network available in one market will suit a car sold in another (Australian EV preparation guidance).

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station | Plug in, up to 40 mph, 25ft Cable, WiFi (2.4GHz), Smart App, Weatherproof Indoor/Outdoor (IP66, NEMA 4), UL & ETL Certified
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

Charging speed is limited by both the charger and the car. A charger’s advertised output does not mean every vehicle will accept power at that rate. Australian government guidance also notes that public rapid charging may slow once the battery is above 80% state of charge; consult the owner’s manual and plan around the time you actually need to add range (Australian public-charging guidance).

3. Does the full cost work for you?

Compare costs using your own fuel use, electricity rates and charging habits. Estimate what you currently spend on petrol from your car’s actual consumption and local fuel prices. For an EV, use its energy consumption and the rates where you expect to charge; separate home, workplace and public charging if their prices differ.

Then include more than fuel or electricity. Compare the purchase price and finance terms, home-charger installation or electrical work, an insurance quote for the exact car, servicing, applicable taxes or incentives, and how long you expect to keep it. Incentives and rules depend on location and can change, so check current local terms rather than assuming a benefit applies.

One UK illustration shows why the charging mix matters: the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles said in guidance that, as of January 2024, home charging cost around 8p per mile, compared with around 13p to 17p per mile to fuel a petrol or diesel car. The same UK guidance said average public-network EV charging was roughly equivalent to fuelling an equivalent petrol car, based on Zapmap charging data (GOV.UK EV running-cost guidance). These dated UK figures are not a forecast for other countries or a guarantee of savings for a particular driver.

4. What should you check about insurance, servicing and warranty?

Get an insurance quote for the exact vehicle before committing; premiums vary by insurer and car. Check the manufacturer’s scheduled servicing requirements and read the warranty documents for the particular vehicle and market.

For the battery warranty, verify the in-service date, mileage limit, capacity threshold, exclusions and whether coverage transfers to you. UK government guidance updated in 2025 describes an eight-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty and capacity protections in its relevant regulatory context (GOV.UK battery-warranty guidance). That description should not be treated as a universal warranty for every EV or jurisdiction.

The US Department of Energy says manufacturers typically do not publish replacement battery prices and that an out-of-warranty replacement is expected to be a significant expense (US Department of Energy EV maintenance guidance). Rather than relying on a generic replacement estimate, establish the condition and remaining coverage of the car you’re considering.

5. What changes when you’re buying a used EV?

A used EV needs checks beyond the usual bodywork and road-test inspection. Ask for service and ownership records, check the present usable range, and request a battery state-of-health or remaining-capacity report where available. Those are ways battery condition may be described, according to New Zealand’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA battery-condition guidance).

  • Battery and warranty: Check the battery report against the car’s age and mileage, then confirm remaining warranty coverage and transfer terms.
  • Charging equipment: Confirm which cables are included. Inspect the cable and vehicle port for wear or damage, and check that the connector matches the car and local chargers.
  • Charging capability: Verify the vehicle’s AC and DC charging limits and whether they suit the chargers on your usual routes.
  • Records and inspection: Review service history and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic experienced with EVs. Australian guidance recommends this kind of specialist inspection (Australian used-EV buyer guidance).

A used battery will not perform as it did when new, cautions New Zealand consumer guidance (New Zealand guidance on used EVs). The practical question is whether the car’s current condition and usable range meet your needs, not whether it matches its original range figure.

6. How to compare the cars on your shortlist

Use the same criteria for every vehicle, and compare the exact version sold in your market. Two EVs with similar stated range may fit differently if their charging limits, connectors or access to compatible chargers differ.

What to compare Questions to answer
Range for your driving Does the car cover your typical week and longest regular trip in the conditions you expect? For a used car, what does its present battery condition indicate?
Charging fit Are the connector and AC/DC charging limits compatible with your home setup and the public chargers on your routes? Is overnight charging available?
Cost to own What are the purchase or finance cost, electricity by charging location, fuel avoided, insurance, installation, servicing, taxes and applicable incentives?
Used-car confidence Can you verify battery condition, warranty coverage and transferability, service records, cable condition and inspection results?
Convenience How often would you need to stop and charge, how long would you spend at chargers, and do payment apps or accounts fit your routine?

Decide using the routes you actually drive, the charging you can depend on and quotes for your own circumstances. The evidence does not establish a location-independent total-cost result; local prices, installation needs and the specific car determine whether switching is financially worthwhile.
