A network music player is a hi-fi source component that finds and plays digital music from sources on a home network or, when connected to the internet, from online services. It may convert digital audio to analogue itself or send a digital signal to another component. It does not necessarily include an amplifier or speakers.
What does a network music player do?
Often also called a network streamer or music streamer, the device brings music sources together for playback through a hi-fi system. Depending on the model, those sources can include supported streaming services, internet radio, and a local music collection shared from a computer or network-attached storage (NAS).

Browsing and playback are commonly controlled with an app. Some models also support protocols or services such as AirPlay, Spotify Connect, or UPnP; the exact options depend on the player, its generation, and—in the case of services—your region. Cambridge Audio describes its AXN10 as supporting Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Amazon Music, Qobuz, Deezer, internet radio, AirPlay 2, and Chromecast built-in, but those are claims for that particular model and US product page, not a checklist for every network player. See the AXN10 specifications.
Does a network music player need internet?
Not for every kind of playback. Internet-based streaming services and internet radio need an internet connection. A local library can be available over your home network without internet access, depending on how it is shared and how the player is set up.

For its modern streamers, Cambridge Audio says a local network is generally needed for setup and phone or tablet control, even when internet access is not needed for playback. That is manufacturer guidance for its products, not a universal rule for every brand or playback mode. Read Cambridge Audio’s network guidance.
Can a network player play music from a NAS or computer?
Yes, if the player and the library’s sharing method are compatible. A computer or NAS can make music files available on the home network, often through server software or a protocol such as UPnP. The player’s instructions and the server’s configuration determine how to set it up. Cambridge Audio explains local-library setup.

USB storage is a separate, model-specific option—not a guarantee that any external hard drive will work. For example, Cambridge Audio says the 851N is primarily a network music player and that its USB ports are intended for convenient thumb-drive playback. Check the specific player’s supported storage, file formats, and connection requirements before choosing a drive. Read the 851N USB-storage guidance.

Connections vary by model. A player with a built-in digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) may provide analogue audio outputs for an amplifier or receiver. Another setup may send digital audio to a separate DAC or to an amplifier with a suitable digital input. Some models offer both types of output.

Before buying, compare the player’s actual outputs with the inputs on the equipment you plan to use: an integrated amplifier, receiver, external DAC, or powered speakers. Do not assume that a network player includes amplification or can connect directly to passive speakers. The AXN10 product page, for instance, lists a DAC and multiple audio connection options; check its specifications against your system. AXN10 product details.

- A home network: Connect the player by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, as supported. Ethernet provides a wired network connection; Wi-Fi avoids running a cable. Neither method is universal, so check the model.
- A music source: Choose supported online services, a local library shared from a computer or NAS, or another supported source.
- A compatible audio connection: Match analogue or digital outputs to the inputs on the amplifier, receiver, DAC, or powered speakers.
- A control method: Check whether the player uses a manufacturer app, a supported streaming protocol, or another control option you want.
A NAS, USB drive, and Ethernet cable are optional parts of some systems, not requirements for every network player. Local-library, USB, service, and format support vary by model. Streaming service lists can also change: Cambridge Audio’s service FAQ, for example, specifies services for its Gen 4 players, underscoring why both region and product generation matter. Check the manufacturer’s streaming-service information.

What should you check when choosing a network player?
- Are the streaming services you use supported for your country and the player’s generation?
- Can it access your local music library, and does it work with your server software or sharing protocol?
- Does it support the network connection you can use—Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both?
- Does it have the right analogue or digital outputs for your existing equipment, and is a DAC built in if you need one?
- Does its app, multiroom support, or other control method fit the way you want to use it?
- Are the file formats and any USB-storage features you need explicitly supported?
These checks establish functional fit; they do not establish that one model will sound better than another in every system.
