An AI coding assistant is software that uses artificial intelligence and programming context to help with development. Depending on its features and permissions, it may suggest code, answer questions, explain existing code, or take on a broader task by inspecting repository files, running commands, and editing multiple files. The label describes a range of capabilities—not one fixed level of autonomy.
What does an AI coding assistant do?
These tools use a developer’s request and available programming context to generate or explain code. The context they can use, and the actions they can take, depend on the particular product, feature, and configuration.

For example, GitHub says its IDE chat can use a request alongside the active file, selected code, and workspace information such as languages, frameworks, and dependencies. It describes the generated response as a probabilistic determination of what is likely to come next. That is a documented example of GitHub Copilot, not a description of how every assistant works. What are the main types of coding assistance?
Inline code completion
The assistant suggests code near the cursor, using programming context available in the editor. The developer can accept, modify, or ignore the suggestion.

Chat assistance
A developer asks a question or describes a change in natural language. The assistant may use the active file, selected code, or broader workspace details to answer, explain code, or propose edits. The available context varies by tool and settings.
Agentic coding
A coding agent can take a higher-level task and perform actions such as inspecting repository files, running commands, and changing multiple files. Some agent workflows run asynchronously and return proposed work for review. For instance, Anthropic describes Claude Code as a terminal-based agent with repository-reading, command-running, and multi-file editing capabilities, while also documenting IDE extensions. These modes can coexist in one product. The useful distinction is not simply “assistant” versus “agent”; it is what the specific mode can access and do. A chat feature that suggests an edit is different from an agent authorized to execute commands or modify a repository.
How is an AI coding assistant different from a coding agent?
“AI coding assistant” is the broader category. It includes tools that only offer inline suggestions, as well as chat features and agent modes. “Coding agent” usually refers to a mode that can pursue a task through multiple steps and take actions in a development environment. The terms are not always used consistently, so check the product’s documented permissions and workflow rather than relying on its label.

GitHub also documents third-party agents, including Anthropic Claude and OpenAI Codex, that can work asynchronously on tasks and create pull requests. That describes particular integrations and workflows; it does not mean every coding assistant can access a repository or make changes without approval. GitHub Docs: About third-party coding agents
What should you check when choosing one?
- Workflow and autonomy: Does it offer inline completion, chat, task execution, or a combination? What actions can it take without a separate confirmation?
- Where it runs: Is it available in an IDE, terminal, web interface, or asynchronous cloud workflow?
- Context and integrations: Which files, workspace details, commands, and external services can it access, and can those permissions be configured?
- Compatibility: Check support for your editor, terminal, programming languages, and development platforms.
- Privacy and governance: Review the provider’s current data-handling documentation, organizational controls, and policy settings for the specific product and plan.
- Review and cost: Determine how to inspect proposed changes and what usage, token, or platform charges apply. GitHub says its coding-agent sessions consume GitHub Actions minutes and AI credits based on the model and tokens processed; check its current terms for applicable limits and costs. Do AI coding assistants produce code you can trust?
Generated code and agent-made changes need appropriate review. Check whether a change meets the task, fits the project, and behaves correctly; run relevant tests and inspect command effects before accepting work. A tool’s ability to generate or modify code is not, by itself, evidence that its output is reliable.

Productivity figures should also be read in context. GitHub’s product page makes vendor claims of “up to 75% higher satisfaction with their jobs” and “up to 55% more productive at writing code.” Those are GitHub’s claims, not independent findings established here, and they should not be generalized to every assistant or developer.
