It is a descriptive term, not one fixed product category: a computer library, a network music streamer, or a music-production app can each serve as a hub in a different setup.
What makes something a digital music hub?
The shared idea is connection or central access. A hub may collect music from different sources in one place, send it to speakers around a home, or connect apps and controllers for making music. The exact features depend on the device or software.

A music service and a hub are different things. A service supplies music; a hub organizes or connects content, devices, or tools. A system can use a service as one of its sources, but the service itself is not necessarily the hub.
What can a digital music hub do?
- Bring local audio files, playlists, internet radio, or supported online sources together.
- Make a computer-based library available to other playback devices on a home network.
- Route networked music to a stereo, powered speakers, headphones, or more than one room, depending on the setup.
- In music production, connect audio signals, apps, or MIDI controllers.
Common kinds of digital music hubs
A computer and music library
A computer can act as a hub when it gathers audio files, playlists, and internet radio into one library and makes them available around the home. Logitech described this model in a 2006 announcement: its software combined music from several PC programs into a unified library that could be browsed and played remotely. The announcement is a historical example, not evidence of current product availability.

Logitech also reported historical survey figures from Parks Associates: in 2006, 40 percent of online households played music files on a PC, 33 percent listened to internet-radio streams, and fewer than 10 percent of those people played that music through their stereo. These figures were attributed to Parks Associates by Logitech and should not be read as current statistics. Logitech’s 2006 announcement
A network music streamer
A standalone Wi-Fi music streamer can connect networked music sources to a home stereo. Depending on the model, it may play internet radio, stream a computer library, or accept audio through another connection. A 2009 VTech announcement, for example, called its IS9181 a “complete music hub for the home” and described internet radio, computer-library streaming, and an auxiliary input for a digital audio player. Those are historical product details, not current buying advice. VTech’s 2009 announcement

A NAS for local music storage
A network-attached storage device (NAS) can hold a local music collection and make it available for playback, but it is one component of a listening setup rather than a complete system by itself. Playback still depends on compatible software or devices and an audio output path. An ASUSTOR datasheet describes older 61/62 Series NAS models used as a local music hub with SoundsGood or iTunes Server and S/PDIF output; those models and features are historical examples, not confirmation of current compatibility. A hub for music production
In a music-making context, “hub” can mean software or a base that connects instruments, apps, audio, or controllers rather than a home listening device. Ableton uses the phrase for an iOS performance base with wireless MIDI and controller support, and describes AUM as an audio mixer, recorder, and connection hub. Ableton’s Link-enabled products page

- Sources: Check whether you need local files, internet radio, online streaming sources, or a combination.
- Library management: Decide whether a computer should organize the collection, or whether you need separate network storage such as a NAS.
- Connections: Confirm the specific model’s network and audio connections, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet, Bluetooth, USB, optical, line-in, or analog output.
- Playback destination: Check compatibility with the stereo, powered speakers, headphones, or multiroom equipment you already use.
- Purpose: Distinguish a listening-and-library setup from a music-production system for audio routing or MIDI control.
Because “digital music hub” is not a standardized technical label, verify the exact source support, outputs, and compatibility in the documentation for the device or software you are considering.
