A 500-watt inverter can run compatible devices whose combined running demand stays within its continuous output rating—but the label alone cannot tell you which appliances will work. Startup surge, output waveform, battery supply and connection limits all matter. Check the appliance’s label or manual alongside the inverter’s continuous and surge ratings before connecting it.
What does a 500-watt rating actually mean?
An inverter converts a battery’s DC electricity into AC power for devices that use AC. Its continuous wattage is the sustained output ceiling: add the running watts of everything you plan to use at once, and keep the total within that rating. The title does not specify a model, so “500 watts” should not be treated as a universal promise of 500 watts in every setup. Ratings may be subject to model-specific conditions, including the way the inverter is connected.

Why a device may not start even when its running watts fit
Some motors and compressors briefly draw more power at startup than they use once running. The inverter needs enough surge capacity for that starting demand as well as enough continuous capacity for normal operation. A DOE-hosted 2018 refrigeration research paper says refrigerator starting current is typically three times running current in the context of that paper; that figure should not be applied to every refrigerator or appliance. Look for both the appliance’s starting requirement and the inverter’s peak or surge rating, including how long the inverter can sustain that peak. If either figure is missing, do not assume a successful startup based only on the appliance’s running watts.
Waveform compatibility can matter
Inverters produce AC output from DC input, but their output waveform varies by model. Some equipment may require pure sine-wave power; other devices may work with modified sine-wave output. Follow the device maker’s guidance rather than assuming all AC appliances are compatible. Eaton lists output type as a factor to consider when selecting an inverter, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s inverter overview explains the DC-to-AC conversion.

For a specific example, Cobra’s POWER500W is rated at 500 watts and uses modified sine-wave output. Cobra says it is not suitable for devices that require pure sine output. Those specifications apply to that model, not to all 500-watt inverters. See Cobra’s POWER500W guide.

A model’s headline rating may not be available through every connection. Cobra states that the POWER500W delivers no more than 180 watts when connected through its 12V vehicle accessory cable. That is a model-specific limit; other inverters may have different restrictions. Distinguish an accessory-socket limit from a direct-to-battery rating, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the connection you intend to use. Estimate the battery current, not the runtime
The inverter draws energy from the battery to supply its AC load. REDARC’s approximate shortcut for a 12V system is to divide the actual load in watts by 10. On that basis, a 500-watt AC load implies roughly 50 amps of battery current. REDARC also gives a more detailed estimate: load watts divided by battery voltage and inverter efficiency. These are current estimates, not runtime guarantees. See REDARC’s inverter power guidance.
Actual runtime depends on factors including how long the load operates, battery capacity and condition, voltage under load, inverter efficiency, cabling and cutoff settings. The 50A estimate does not mean every 500-watt inverter can draw that current continuously through every connection.

How to check whether your setup is suitable
- Identify the loads. Read each appliance’s label or manual for its running watts and, where relevant, starting demand. Add the running watts of devices that will operate at the same time.
- Check continuous and surge capacity. Confirm that the inverter’s continuous rating covers the combined running load and that its surge capability and duration cover any startup demand.
- Confirm waveform compatibility. Check whether each device requires pure sine-wave output or permits the waveform the inverter supplies.
- Check the connection and input supply. Confirm the inverter’s DC input requirements and whether its full output is available through the planned connection—especially if using a vehicle accessory socket.
- Follow the installation instructions. Use the manufacturer’s specified cabling, fuse or protection, cooling clearances and operating limits. Cable and fuse sizing depend on the specific inverter and installation.
What to compare when choosing between 500-watt inverters
