Receiving Twitch chat is the easy part of building a chat overlay. The hard part is drawing each message faithfully and keeping the display correct through a long stream. A developer writing as Zimtzimt published an account of this work on DEV Community on 29 September 2026, and it identifies six problems that appear once an overlay moves past the happy path: moderation events, Unicode offsets, layered emotes, CSS transform conflicts, metadata that arrives late, and connections that fail without an error.
Receiving chat is the easy part
According to the author, chat arrives over a WebSocket using IRC-style commands. The example connects anonymously with a read-only justinfan nick, which means no OAuth token is needed just to watch a channel. The author’s parser for the initial chat messages is about 40 lines, by the author’s own characterisation.

The setup sequence in the account looks like this:
- Open a WebSocket connection to Twitch’s chat endpoint.
- Request the
twitch.tv/tagscapability. This supplies message metadata: colour, badges, user ID, and emote positions. - Request the
twitch.tv/commandscapability. This supplies moderation events, described below. - Authenticate as an anonymous
justinfannick, then join the channel.
The protocol details here are the author’s reported implementation. They were not independently checked against Twitch’s current documentation for this article, so confirm the endpoint, capability names, and login flow against Twitch’s developer docs before building on them.

A chat overlay that only appends messages will eventually show content that chat itself has removed. The author’s setup handles two events from the commands capability:

Just plug it in, and you’re ready to go, making it an easy addition to your workflow. For those looking to fine-tune image parameters or enhance sound quality, EMEETLINK software is available for advanced customization. Both simplicity and advanced needs can be met effortlessly.
CLEARCHATsignals a timeout or ban. Matching messages from that user should leave the overlay.CLEARMSGsignals a single deleted message. That one line should disappear, and nothing else should.
Treat these as state changes to the display, not as log entries. An overlay that ignores them is not wrong on the first message; it becomes wrong once a moderator acts during a stream, and viewers see the removed text still sitting there.
Unicode offsets break emotes after emoji
This is the most concrete bug in the account. Twitch gives each emote’s position as a range in the message, and the author found that the positions count Unicode code points. JavaScript string indexing counts UTF-16 code units. For most ASCII text the two agree. Once an emoji appears earlier in the line, they diverge, and an emote is sliced out at the wrong place.
In the author’s example, a waving-hand emoji sits before the word “Kappa.” The emoji is one code point but two UTF-16 code units, so an offset measured in code points points two units too early in a string-indexed message. The fix is to split the message into code points before applying any offsets:

// Illustrative: split by code point, not by UTF-16 unit
const codePoints = Array.from(message);
const emoteText = codePoints.slice(start, end + 1).join('');
Apply the same rule to every range from the tags capability, and rebuild the code-point array whenever the message changes.
Third-party emotes look like ordinary words
Twitch marks its own emotes in the message body. The author reports that 7TV, BetterTTV, and FrankerFaceZ emotes are not marked that way. They appear as plain words, so the overlay has to check each word against the emote sets of each provider. That means fetching those sets, matching names exactly, and keeping the lookup current.
Some of these emotes are zero-width. They are meant to sit on top of another emote rather than take their own space. The author stacks them in a single cell of an inline grid, so the base emote and its overlays share the same position. Two consequences follow. The base emote has to be drawn first, and the layers must be ordered so that the visible result matches what viewers see in a provider’s own client.

CSS transforms can overwrite each other
The author’s effects depended on transform. A static horizontal flip, written as a transform, was lost as soon as an animation also set transform. The animation replaced the whole value, and the flip disappeared with it.

The workaround is to stop using the shorthand for animated movement. The author uses the individual translate, rotate, and scale properties for animation, and composes static and animated effects so that neither overwrites the other. Individual transform properties need a newer browser engine than the shorthand, which is where the compatibility question begins.
Browser versions in OBS
An overlay loaded as a browser source in OBS runs in OBS’s embedded Chromium, not in your everyday browser. The author reports the following mapping, which should be checked against OBS’s own release notes before you rely on it:

| OBS version | Embedded Chromium (as reported by the author) | Individual transform properties (need Chromium 104 or later, per the author) |
|---|---|---|
| OBS 30 | Chromium 103 | Not supported |
| OBS 31 | Chromium 127 | Supported |
If your overlay must work on OBS 30, the separate-property approach will fail silently on that version. Test the overlay in the OBS version your viewers and your own setup actually use, not in a desktop browser.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Metadata arrives in no guaranteed order
The author’s overlay opens the chat connection while also fetching about a dozen emote and badge lists, and opens three live-update sockets. Those requests do not finish in a fixed order. A message can arrive before the emote set it needs. A user’s name styling can appear only after that user’s first message. Emote sets can also change during a stream.

The author keeps the raw chat text and treats the rendered line as derived data. When emote or badge information changes, the line is tokenised again from the original text rather than patched in place. The summary the author gives is: “Keep the raw input, and make the view something you can compute again.”

In practice, this means a message stored as the original string and its metadata, with a render function that takes both and returns the tokens to draw. Any change to the emote or badge sets triggers a re-render of recent lines, not a rewrite of stored data.
Silent connection failure is the dangerous one
Reconnecting after a socket closes is the case most developers handle first. The author points out that an open connection that delivers nothing is harder to notice, and that an overlay showing no new messages can look healthy while the stream runs. The account describes a liveness check with two parts:
- Send a ping every 60 seconds.
- If no incoming data arrives for 90 seconds, treat the connection as dead, close it, and reconnect.
Reconnection itself uses exponential backoff, capped at one minute, with a random factor between 0.5 and 1.5 applied to each delay. The jitter spreads out reconnect attempts so that many overlays do not hit the server at the same moment after an outage. The 60-second and 90-second values are the author’s choices for this implementation, not a published standard. A chat with very quiet periods may need a longer silence threshold, and a faster ping may suit a different setup.
Where Petal fits
The article’s project is Petal, which the author describes as a free, open-source chat overlay for OBS. It supports Twitch, 7TV, BetterTTV, and FrankerFaceZ emotes, along with badges and name paints. The author says it can be tried without creating an account, and the original post links to its source code. Petal is relevant here because it shows the six problems above handled in a shipping project, but the article does not establish any paid offering, pricing, or distribution arrangement.
What the evidence does and does not establish
- This is one developer’s published account, dated 29 September 2026. It describes choices made for one overlay, and it is not a benchmark or a survey of overlays.
- The timings, the 40-line parser, and the startup request count are the author’s implementation details. They are not performance measurements.
- Twitch’s chat protocol, the browser versions shipped in OBS, and the behaviour of third-party emote providers can all change. Check current Twitch developer documentation, OBS release notes, and each provider’s documentation before treating any of these details as current.
The strongest takeaway is not any single value. It is the ordering of effort: the connection is the simple part, and correctness depends on how the overlay handles removals, offsets, late data, and silence.
