A native or server-side routine can accept a path and act on it. A web page receives a handle only after the user picks a file or folder in browser UI, and every later read, write, or restore depends on what that handle is still allowed to do.
The failures below are the documented constraints a file-tool migration runs into. This is not a log of one codebase, so each point is tied to the platform documentation it comes from, with the symptom it produces and the design change that avoids it.

How the browser model differs from native file code
The native column describes the general model of desktop and server file access. The browser columns describe the APIs covered by the sources cited in this article.
| Question | Native desktop or server code | File System Access API | Input and download fallbacks | Origin Private File System (OPFS) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Where does the file come from? | An arbitrary path the API accepts | A handle returned after the user selects a file or directory | A file the user chooses in an input element | Entries the app creates inside the site’s private storage |
| Can the original be changed in place? | Yes, subject to operating system permissions | Yes, if write permission is granted on that handle | No. An anchor download saves a new copy | Not a route to user files |
| Does it handle a directory tree? | Depends on the native API used | Can enumerate a directory the user selected | Only partially, through a non-standard directory input | Not stated in the cited sources |
| Does it need a user action? | No browser picker is involved | Yes. The picker requires a secure context and a user gesture | The user chooses the file in the input | Not applicable to user-selected files |
| What survives a refresh? | Not applicable to a browser session | A handle can be stored, but its permission must be checked again | Nothing is retained by the API | Entries stay in origin storage; durability guarantees are not stated in the cited sources |
Seven friction points, in the order they tend to appear
1. Code that expects a path receives a handle instead
The File System Access API returns a handle after the user selects a file or directory, and that handle governs every operation that follows. Chrome Developers describes the API as enumerating a selected directory, but the selection is what authorizes that access. Code that builds a path string, reads from a configured folder at startup, or walks a known directory tree on load has no direct equivalent.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
The practical redesign is to store the handle rather than a path, and to make every entry point start from either a picker or a restored handle.
2. Pickers open only from a user gesture in a secure context
Chrome Developers documents that showOpenFilePicker() must run in a secure context and from a user gesture. Call the picker directly inside the click handler:
openButton.addEventListener('click', async () => {
const [fileHandle] = await window.showOpenFilePicker();
// keep fileHandle; do not reopen the picker from a timer or message handler
});
A picker call made after other asynchronous work, from a timer, or from a message handler is not the same as a call made inside the click. Put the picker in the handler that the user actually triggered, and show a visible control, not a background initializer, that opens it.

3. Opening a file does not grant permission to change it
The Chrome Developers overview states: “A web app cannot modify a file on disk without getting explicit permission from the user.” A successful open therefore does not imply write access. When the app wants to modify an existing file, the browser may ask for permission, and the user can decline. If that happens, saving cannot proceed through that handle.
Design for the decline as a normal outcome:
- Track unsaved changes and show them in the interface.
- Name the action in plain language, for example “Save changes to notes.md,” rather than a generic “Save.”
- Request write permission inside the save click handler, not when the page loads.
- When permission is refused, offer a download of the edited content as a new file and say that the original was not changed.
4. A stored handle is not a stored permission
Handles can be serialized into IndexedDB, but the permission attached to them is runtime state. MDN’s FileSystemFileHandle reference, checked October 7, 2026, notes that read and write permissions do not persist after a refresh if no other tabs for the origin remain open. Restoring a file therefore needs a check on every page load:
- Load the stored handle from IndexedDB.
- Call
await handle.queryPermission({ mode: 'readwrite' }). It returns'granted','prompt', or'denied'. - If the result is
'granted', resume the session with the file open. - If the result is
'prompt', show a button such as “Reconnect notes.md.” In its click handler, callawait handle.requestPermission({ mode: 'readwrite' }). - If the result is
'denied', or the user declines, keep the content in memory and offer a download so the work is not lost.
5. Fallbacks imitate the workflow; they do not reproduce it
Chrome’s documentation says the API cannot be completely polyfilled. The available fallbacks each cover part of the job:
Rank #3
- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- A file input lets the user choose a file. It does not provide handle-based read and write access.
- An anchor download saves a new file to the user’s download location. It cannot overwrite the original.
- A
webkitdirectoryinput partially imitates directory selection. It is non-standard, so it should not be the basis for writing a tree back to disk.
Build the interface around the capability that is actually present. A fallback path should say “Save a copy,” not “Save,” because the copy is the only thing it can produce.

The Chrome Developers overview, published August 19, 2024, says the API works on most Chromium browsers across Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Linux, and Android. It lists Brave as an exception, where the feature sits behind a flag on that page. This is a dated snapshot, not a current support matrix, so verify the exact browser and device versions your users run.
Feature-detect each method separately, because the pickers and the permission methods are not guaranteed to appear together:

const hasOpen = typeof window.showOpenFilePicker === 'function';
const hasSave = typeof window.showSaveFilePicker === 'function';
const hasDirectory = typeof window.showDirectoryPicker === 'function';
const canUseHandles = window.isSecureContext && hasOpen;
Enable each part of the interface based on its own flag. A browser may support opening a file but not directory access, and the UI should reflect that.
7. Browser storage is not access to the user’s files
The Origin Private File System is private to the site’s origin. WebKit’s February 2022 explanation of its implementation, which is historical and not current support guidance, notes that an OPFS entry may be represented by an internal database object rather than a normal file on the local disk. OPFS fits caches, offline work, and app-managed data. It does not replace the user’s selected documents and does not grant broad filesystem access.
If an app saves user work to OPFS, the user will not find those entries in their normal file manager. Exporting to a real file has to be an explicit action that goes through the picker or a download.

What the permission model does not stop
The browser’s permission model reduces silent access, but it does not remove abuse once a user has granted access. The USENIX Security Symposium paper “Ransomware over Modern Web Browsers” (2023) implemented a browser-based ransomware proof of concept that used granted file access. Its threat model depends on a user visiting a malicious or compromised app and granting access. The paper demonstrates the risk under the conditions it tested. It does not establish how common such attacks are in practice.
For a file tool, this shapes the design:
- Request the narrowest mode you need. Read-only access should not be upgraded to read-write without a reason the user can see.
- Ask for access at the moment the user acts on a file, not when the page loads.
- Show which files or folders are connected, and give the user a control that discards the stored handle.
Symptom-to-cause checklist
Use this table to match a visible failure to its cause and the section that explains the fix.
Quick Recap
| Symptom | Likely cause | Check or fix |
|---|---|---|
| The picker does nothing or throws | The call is outside a user gesture, or the page is not in a secure context | Move the call into the click handler and serve the page from a secure context, such as HTTPS (friction point 2) |
| A file works, then fails after refresh | Permission did not persist, and no other tab for the origin is open | Run queryPermission() on load and reconnect from a button (friction point 4) |
| Saving fails after a file was opened | Write permission was declined or never requested | Request permission in the save handler and offer a copy download on refusal (friction point 3) |
| Export creates a new file, and the original is unchanged | An anchor download cannot overwrite a file | Label the action “Save a copy” and keep in-place saves on the handle path (friction point 5) |
| A method is missing in one browser | The method is unsupported there, or behind a flag in the cited Brave case | Feature-detect each method and render the matching fallback (friction point 6) |
| Saved data is missing from the user’s folders | The data sits in OPFS, which is origin-private storage | Add an explicit export step to a user-chosen file (friction point 7) |
