Building BitVoices led its creator, B Donald Harris, to reconsider a basic product question: not which social features to add, but what builders should be able to accomplish by being part of the community. In his account, operating the platform and noticing where its original feed-centered model fell short became another source of discovery—alongside requirements, conversations, and research.
Why a familiar social-platform model stopped answering the real question
Harris says BitVoices grew from NotableBIT’s mission to amplify Black excellence in tech. He initially treated an online community as a social platform and built familiar components: profiles, posts, comments, reactions, follows, notifications, videos, news, and a feed.

Over time, he found himself curating articles that few people read and asking whether more content or additional features would address the product’s underlying purpose. The essay does not give readership figures, so “few” remains Harris’s qualitative description rather than a measured result. The more useful question became: what should a builder be able to do on BitVoices, what value should they get, and what should happen because the platform exists?
How the product framing changed
Harris describes conversations, research into other platforms, and observation of BitVoices itself as inputs to his reconsideration. The product’s center of gravity shifted from the feed toward builders: what they are making, what they need, what they can offer, what needs attention, and who might help.

Builder HQ is the expression of that shift Harris describes. Hubs can gather people around shared interests, technologies, business models, or geography; his examples include AI Builders, SaaS Builders, and Tulsa Builders. Posts, comments, reactions, articles, and connections still have a role, but as means to support the community’s purpose rather than as its definition.
What the working product added to discovery
Plans, conversations, and research can surface needs, but a functioning product also makes assumptions visible in use. Harris says observing BitVoices helped him question what the platform was for and whether its content-oriented activity was serving that purpose. This is a practical distinction: a feature list describes what software can do; use of the software can reveal where people encounter friction, what they seek, and whether the experience supports the intended outcome.

Harris is not arguing that teams should skip requirements, user conversations, or research and start coding instead. He presents implementation as an additional source of information, not a replacement for those methods. His closing metaphor captures the idea: “Requirements, conversations and research can tell me a lot about what software should be, but sometimes I also need to build enough of it to hear what the software has to say.” He clarifies that the software does not literally have an opinion; the phrase describes what can be learned by building and observing it.
Community is more than its feature set
Harris’s concise formulation is “Community is culture, not features.” In his account, culture, relationships, and purpose are what features should serve. A feed, reactions, or notifications may help people connect, but adding those mechanisms does not by itself establish why a community matters or what members can accomplish together.

For product teams, the useful test is to connect each proposed feature to a member outcome. If a feature does not help people find relevant peers, get support, offer expertise, collaborate, or otherwise advance the community’s purpose, its presence on a standard social-platform checklist is not a sufficient reason to build it.

This is Harris’s first-person account of BitVoices and his interpretation of its direction, not a measured comparison or formal study. The essay reports no engagement, retention, or business outcome figures that establish the later framing performed better. It supports a narrower lesson: in this case, questions raised while curating content and operating a live product led Harris to rethink the purpose of the platform and the role of its features.

That makes the story a useful prompt for product discovery, not proof of a universal formula. Teams can treat a working product as a way to learn while still doing the research and conversations needed to decide what to build and why.
