Verdict: The Dell Pro Max 18 Plus (MB18250) can replace a desktop for demanding professional work when you need workstation-class graphics, an expansive screen and a broad set of ports—but it is better thought of as a workstation you can move than a laptop for daily commuting. Its size, carry weight and limited unplugged runtime are the trade-offs.
Who should consider the Dell Pro Max 18 Plus?
This 18-inch mobile workstation makes sense for professionals whose work benefits from a large display and configurable professional graphics, and who mainly use the computer at a desk or move it between work locations. It is not a sensible pick just because you want a large, fast everyday laptop: Dell lists a starting weight of 3.25 kg (7.17 lb), before the power adapter, and Notebookcheck measured its review configuration at 3.605 kg (7.95 lb).

The desktop-replacement label describes the system’s potential role, not a guarantee that every configuration can replace every desktop. The right choice depends on the specific CPU, GPU, memory, storage and display you select, as well as the applications and peripherals your work requires.

The MB18250 is sold in multiple configurations, so review results apply to the tested systems, not every version. Dell’s published options reach Intel Core Ultra processors, NVIDIA RTX PRO graphics up to RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell with 24 GB, memory configurations using CAMM2 or SO-DIMM, and storage capacity up to 16 TB with RAID options. Those are selectable maximums; do not assume the top CPU, GPU, memory, display and storage choices are all offered together in a particular regional SKU.

91mobiles tested a configuration with an RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell rated at 175 W. It scored 21,344 in 3DMark Time Spy and 11,466 in Time Spy Extreme. In 91mobiles’ comparison set, the system trailed the MSI Titan 18 HX AI in Time Spy and scored ahead of the Asus Strix Scar 16 and HP Omen Max 16 units tested. These synthetic results give a point of reference for that review configuration; they do not predict performance in every professional application.
91mobiles also described the system as capable of gaming, while noting that gaming is not Dell’s main target. Buyers should choose the GPU for the professional workloads they actually run—such as supported rendering, design or engineering software—not treat gaming performance as a substitute for application-specific evidence.

How good is the 18-inch display?
Notebookcheck praised the IPS panel in its tested unit for its brightness, color coverage and contrast, describing it as one of the better 18-inch IPS displays it had seen. The large screen is useful for working with detailed projects or keeping several windows visible. TechRadar found its review display sufficiently sharp for its work, but cautioned that some video, photo and 3D professionals may find better options for their needs.

There are trade-offs. Notebookcheck said the panel does not match current OLED alternatives for HDR or response performance, and noted a slightly grainy matte overlay and minor uneven backlight bleed on its unit. These are reviewer observations, not proof that every MB18250 has an identical panel: Notebookcheck cautions that manufacturers may use components from different suppliers. Check the exact display option and assess whether color, HDR and response requirements matter more than screen size and general image quality.

Can its ports replace a dock?
Dell’s US product listing specifies a broad range of connections: two Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports with Power Delivery and DisplayPort, one Thunderbolt 4 port, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, 2.5Gbps Ethernet, an SD card reader, an audio jack and a lock slot. A smart card reader is optional. Port selection can vary by configuration or region, so confirm the local listing before relying on a particular connection.
For a desk setup, those built-in connections may be enough to attach common peripherals and displays without a dock. If you want a one-cable connection to a larger setup, Dell lists the optional Pro Thunderbolt 5 Smart Dock as a compatible option. Notebookcheck describes power pass-through up to 300 W and additional ports; the dock has its own large AC adapter. Confirm compatibility and availability for the exact laptop and dock configuration before buying.

Can you upgrade or service it?
Notebookcheck’s review of the tested unit found two M.2 2280 PCIe 5.0 x4 SSD slots, a CAMM2 RAM slot, removable WLAN, a discrete graphics module and a WAN slot beneath the bottom cover. The publication also says a CAMM2-to-SO-DIMM adapter is available. Treat this as evidence about the reviewed system, not a blanket promise that every configuration has the same upgrade path.

How long does the battery last, and what does it weigh to carry?
Dell lists a 96 Wh battery, but runtime depends on configuration, workload and settings. In 91mobiles’ PCMark 10 video-loop test, its reviewed system lasted 6 hours 56 minutes with the Balanced profile and brightness set to 80%. 91mobiles estimated roughly five to six hours in typical use and said demanding workstation work makes most sense while plugged in. The video-loop result is a test under those stated conditions, not an all-day-work guarantee.
For a more complete carry-weight picture, Notebookcheck measured its laptop at 3.605 kg (7.95 lb) and its power supply separately at 718 g (1.58 lb). Dell’s 3.25 kg (7.17 lb) figure is a starting system weight, not the weight of the tested configuration plus adapter. 91mobiles reports that its review unit came with a 280 W USB-C adapter, describing it as large. Adapter wattage depends on configuration, so check what ships with the system you intend to buy.
What did the reviewed configurations cost?
Published review prices are historical context, not current quotes. TechRadar reported an approximate starting price of $3,500 and $9,245 for its tested configuration: Core Ultra 9, 128 GB RAM, RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell with 24 GB, 2 TB storage, QHD+ display and Wi-Fi 7. Notebookcheck listed $6,000 for its own review configuration. Those are different configurations and review-era figures; they should not be read as directly comparable or as current October 2026 prices.
Check Dell’s local store for the current price, availability and exact SKU, then verify that the listed display, GPU, memory, storage and adapter match your requirements. Regional options and inventory can differ.
How to decide whether it fits your work
- Choose it if your applications benefit from the available professional GPU options, you want an 18-inch screen and ports that can support your desk setup, and you can accept a heavy system and adapter.
- Look elsewhere if frequent commuting, long unplugged work sessions, OLED-class HDR or fast response is more important than workstation configuration and screen size.
- Before ordering confirm the exact regional configuration, supported workload requirements, memory and storage layout, display option, included adapter, warranty terms and current price.
The Pro Max 18 Plus is most convincing when it will spend much of its time plugged in and its specific CPU and GPU configuration matches a real professional workload. If portability or battery life is central to the purchase, its desktop-replacement strengths come with too much cost in weight and convenience.
