Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →In a server-authoritative board game, the server is the sole authority that validates and commits outcomes. A client sends an action proposal; the server authenticates the player and seat, checks the game version and rules, commits the resulting state, and returns only the information that player may see. The client handles input, display, animation, and optional previews—then reconciles to the server’s committed state.
Put all outcome-changing decisions behind one authority
Model the game as a state machine. Its canonical state is the complete truth of the match: board positions, scores, turn and clock state, deck contents or random-sequence state, and any hidden information. A client’s move is a request, not a fact. The authority decides whether it is valid and, if so, commits the transition.

This boundary includes more than piece movement. The authority should own turn order, deadlines, terminal results, captures, scoring, and random outcomes whenever they affect the game. A deterministic transition function driven by a recorded seed and ordered actions can make replay and debugging practical. The specific storage and replay design depends on the game; decide what must survive a restart and how to recover or audit a match rather than assuming every game needs a permanent append-only log.

Keep the client responsive without making it authoritative
The client renders the board and gathers input. It may apply a rules-aware optimistic preview so a move appears immediately, but that preview is provisional: after the server responds, the display must reconcile to the committed state or version. If a preview would reveal information the player is not allowed to know, do not send that information to the client; disable optimism for that action when necessary. The boardgame.io design documentation describes this pattern and its caveat for secret-state moves.
Make connection and rejection states explicit. A remote client may have no game state while it connects. If an action is rejected, keep the board aligned with the last authoritative observation and explain the rejection where useful. Do not leave a speculative move displayed as though it were accepted.

- UNO card game provides classic play, where players match colors or numbers in a race to get rid of all their cards!
- Action Cards and Wild Cards add unexpected excitement and game-changing fun, like the Reverse Card that switches the direction of play!
- The deck includes 3 blank Wild Cards for house rules anyone can make up -- erase and create new rules each game!
- When down to one card, players don't want to forget to yell 'UNO!' Keep score and the first player or team to 500 wins!
- The color blind accessible deck has special graphic symbols on each card to help identify its color, allowing players with any form of color blindness to play!
Validate and commit each proposed move safely
A robust move path separates identity, authorization, rule validation, and persistence. A client-supplied player ID is not proof that the connection controls that seat.
- Authenticate the connection and bind it to an authorized game seat.
- Receive the game identifier, proposed action, and a version or other explicit concurrency token.
- Check that the game exists and is active, the actor owns the seat, the action is timely when clocks apply, and the request is based on an allowed current version.
- Validate the action against canonical state and game rules. For chess-like moves, verify the source piece, destination, legality, captures, and terminal conditions.
- Commit the new state and version atomically with any event or history record needed for recovery.
- Generate each player’s permitted observation and publish the committed update. Provide a resume or notification path for disconnected players.
Unity’s example follows this kind of flow by loading the board, checking turn and piece ownership, validating legality, applying captures and checkmate, saving, and sending a real-time push. The EigenInteractive documentation also describes version checks that reject stale requests. It notes a deliberate exception for simultaneous actions when a player’s observation has not changed; use such an exception only when simultaneous play is part of the rules.

- Hot or cold. Soft or hard. Wizard or…not a wizard? Work together to decide where your clue falls on the spectrum in this telepathic party game.
- POLYGON: “One of the best party games we’ve ever played.”
- NYT WIRECUTTER: Featured in “The best board games”
- Works in groups from 2-12+ people. Great for large parties, offsites, family gatherings, and anywhere you need instant fun.
- 5 seconds to set up, 1 minute to learn, 30 minutes to play
Give concurrent requests one ordering rule
Two requests for the same game can arrive close together. Use a serialized per-game room or actor, a transaction with version comparison, or an equivalent mechanism so two actions based on the same prior version cannot silently overwrite each other or both be accepted when only one is legal. EigenInteractive’s single serialized object per game is one way to obtain this property, not a universal technology choice.
Protect hidden information and make games recoverable
Keep the full state in trusted server-side storage and derive a separate observation for each seat. A card game’s canonical state can contain every card identity while a player’s observation excludes cards that player cannot see. Masking a value in the interface is not protection if the value has already been sent to the client.

- INTRODUCING A DIGITAL DIE: More suspense, more surprises, more laughs! In this Jenga game, enjoy the classic Jenga gameplay fans love—or dare to play it with the digital die for added challenges
- 6 MORE WAYS TO PLAY: Roll the digital die for unpredictable challenges: play using thumbs only, race against the clock, and more! (To download the die onto a phone, scan the in-pack QR code or access the web app. No additional purchase needed)
- HILARIOUS CHALLENGES: Actions like “Team-Up” amp up the fun! A player who rolls it selects another player to act as their eyes. The other player can guide their arm, but can’t touch the tower—or topple it
- EXCITING GAME FOR PARTIES OR SOLO PLAY: The Jenga game for kids and adults is the wooden block balancing game livening up parties for generations. No friends around? No problem. Play solo to beat a personal best
- GENUINE WOOD BLOCKS: The Jenga party game includes 54 precision crafted wooden blocks. Pull out a block, place it on top, but don't let the tower fall in this original wood block game
Persist enough state for a player to resume after a service restart or on another device. Choose snapshots, ordered events, or both; specify retention and recovery behavior. Events can support replay and dispute investigation, while snapshots can speed recovery. No single storage backend or retention period is required by these general patterns: Unity describes Cloud Save persistence across clients, while EigenInteractive describes versioned transitions stored with the per-game authority.

Choose transport and supporting services for the game
A leisurely turn-based game may work with a reliable request-and-response API for moves and reads, plus polling or push notifications for opponents’ updates. A persistent WebSocket can suit a game that benefits from immediate two-way updates or a continuously connected room. The examples use WebSockets or push, but do not establish one transport as best for every board game.
Keep the live-game arbiter separate in responsibility from services that organize or summarize play. Identity, lobby discovery, matchmaking, profiles, leaderboards, notifications, and analytics can be separate services or modules. Their projections and read models may briefly be stale; they should not decide whether a move in the live match is legal.
Evaluate frameworks by the guarantees they provide
Compare implementation options by their behavior and fit, not by assuming a particular vendor is required:

- Can each game have one unambiguous serialized authority, with safe handling of stale writes?
- Can the server filter hidden state into a separate observation for each player before transmission?
- How are games persisted, resumed, and optionally replayed?
- How are reconnects and ordered updates handled?
- Does the operational model suit asynchronous turn-based play, rather than requiring a real-time simulation?
- Does the system fit the team’s language, deployment, security, observability, and maintenance needs?
boardgame.io documents a remote game master, optimistic updates, WebSocket synchronization, and pluggable persistence; its default storage is in-memory, so a deployment that needs durability must configure persistent storage. Colyseus describes authoritative rooms, server-defined synchronized state, matchmaking, and engine integrations. Unity’s Cloud Code example demonstrates backend validation and persistence. These are implementation examples, not a neutral performance, price, or scalability comparison.
