What Barn Owls Eat and How They Hunt in Cities

Urban barn owls mainly eat small mammals, but local prey and nearby habitat shape every city’s menu. Evidence from Penang and Tel Aviv shows why pellets, hunting behavior and urban risks must be interpreted site by site.

Urban barn owls still eat mostly small mammals, but the exact menu depends on the prey living around each city. Studies in Penang, Malaysia, and Tel Aviv, Israel, found very different dominant species because their nearby habitats and prey communities differed. The owls usually hunt a city’s open spaces—grass, cropland, rough verges and yards—rather than searching exclusively between buildings.

Barn owls are often described as city wildlife, yet “urban” covers a wide range of places. A campus edge with grass, a village of shop backyards, and cropland beside apartment blocks can all support a hunting owl. The best evidence therefore comes from site-specific studies, not from one universal urban diet.

What do barn owls eat in cities?

Small mammals are the foundation of the diet. Which species dominate is determined by local abundance, the habitat surrounding the roost and the owl population involved. In Britain, the Barn Owl Trust reports a broad diet led by field voles (45%), common shrews (20%) and wood mice (15%). Those percentages describe the total British diet reported by the Trust, not a city-specific sample. The Barn Owl Trust’s hunting and feeding guide provides that national context.

Penang: rats and shrews in an urban campus

Saufi and colleagues examined pellets from introduced Southeast Asian barn owls (Tyto alba javanica) in an urban area of Penang, Malaysia. The sample contained 62 pellets. Norway rats represented 65.37% of prey biomass and house shrews 30.12%; together, commensal rodent pests accounted for 95.49% of prey biomass in that sample. The authors describe a possible biological-control role, but call the results preliminary and note that whether barn owls can reduce pest populations effectively remains debated. Eating rats is evidence of predation, not proof of citywide rat control. Read the Penang study in the Journal of Urban Ecology.

Tel Aviv: voles and mice beside housing

A different pattern appeared in Tel Aviv. Charter, Izhaki, Shapira and Leshem studied pellets from one breeding pair of Tyto alba during the 2005 and 2006 breeding seasons. Six small-mammal species made up 99.3% of the diet. Levant voles were 48.1% of prey specimens and house mice 32.9%. The pair hunted in cropland adjoining a residential area, so the result represents an urban-edge landscape rather than a dense built core. The Tel Aviv paper is available through Tel Aviv University.

Why two urban diets can both be accurate

Penang and Tel Aviv are not contradictory. Their owls encountered different prey communities, habitats and regional populations, and the studies used different sample sizes and scopes. A pellet sample from 62 pellets in Penang cannot stand in for every city, just as one breeding pair in Tel Aviv cannot define all Mediterranean urban owls. Comparing city populations requires keeping four variables together:

  • Local prey availability: rats, shrews, voles and mice occur in different proportions from place to place.
  • Nearby habitat: open grass, cropland, rough margins and yards may be more important than the city label itself.
  • Region and population: Penang’s birds were introduced Tyto alba javanica; the Tel Aviv study involved Tyto alba.
  • Sampling scope: pellet count, number of owls, breeding season and the way researchers count prey all affect the result.

Where do barn owls hunt in an urban landscape?

City hunting grounds are usually a mosaic. In Penang, introduced owls were observed hunting open grass near roadsides, settlements and shop backyards. In Tel Aviv, the studied pair foraged in cropland next to housing. These observations show why a “city owl” should not be imagined as an animal hunting only in streets, courtyards or among high-rise buildings.

Open ground is the foraging core

Short or rough grass, field edges, vacant plots, drainage margins and cultivated land can expose small mammals and give an owl room to search. Built areas matter because they border or contain these patches, and because structures can provide nest or roost opportunities, but the prey capture itself may occur in open habitat. A residential district with no connected grassland or agricultural edge may offer much less hunting space than its owl sightings suggest.

Edges connect habitat patches

Road verges, settlement boundaries and the backs of shops can function as transitions between cover types. The Penang observations specifically included these edge settings. Such sites should be understood as examples from that study, not a rule that every owl prefers roadsides or commercial yards. What matters is whether the edge supports small mammals and allows low, unobstructed flight.

How barn owls locate and capture prey

Barn owls are specialist sound hunters. The Barn Owl Trust describes them as flying low—up to about 3 metres—and slowly back and forth over suitable habitat while relying mostly on sound to detect a small mammal below. They may hover before pouncing or drop directly into grass. The Trust says activity is most common at dusk and dawn. These are natural-history guidance statements, not measurements from an urban tracking experiment. See the Trust’s description of barn owl hunting and feeding.

The search flight

  1. Choose suitable habitat: The owl moves over grass, cropland or another patch where small mammals are likely to be present.
  2. Fly low and slowly: A flight height of up to about 3 metres keeps the owl close enough to hear movement beneath it.
  3. Listen while moving back and forth: The owl’s main search cue is sound rather than a long-distance visual scan.
  4. Pause or hover: When a sound pinpoints a likely target, the owl can hold position briefly.
  5. Drop or pounce: It descends into the grass to seize the mammal, then carries the prey away or swallows it.

The sequence explains why open, quiet patches can be valuable even inside a developed area. It also explains why a brief daytime sighting does not reveal the full hunting routine: the most frequent activity is reported around dusk and dawn.

What the owl eats after the strike

Barn owls generally swallow prey whole. Indigestible material—especially bones, hair and feathers—is compressed into a pellet and regurgitated. Researchers can identify prey by examining those remains. A pellet therefore records what was represented in the sampled meals, not every animal the owl encountered and not the exact route it flew.

How scientists work out an urban barn owl’s diet

Pellet analysis is useful because a roost can accumulate evidence without researchers watching every hunt. The basic workflow is:

  1. Collect pellets: Samples are gathered below a nest, roost or other known owl site.
  2. Dissect the material: Researchers separate bones, hair, teeth and other indigestible remains.
  3. Identify prey: Skull, jaw and tooth features can distinguish rodents, shrews and other mammals.
  4. Count individuals or estimate biomass: A study may report the number of prey specimens, their frequency or their contribution to total prey mass.
  5. State the sample’s limits: Season, number of pellets, number of owls and location determine what the results can support.

The Penang result is expressed as prey biomass, while the Tel Aviv percentages cited above are proportions of prey specimens. Those metrics should not be compared as if they were interchangeable. A large rat contributes much more mass than a small shrew, so a biomass percentage and a specimen percentage answer different questions.

Penang and Tel Aviv compared

Study Owls and setting Sampling scope Main prey result What it supports
Penang, Malaysia (2020) Introduced Southeast Asian barn owls (Tyto alba javanica) in an urban area; observations included grass near roadsides, settlements and shop backyards. 62 urban pellets; results described as preliminary. Norway rats: 65.37% of prey biomass; house shrews: 30.12%; commensal rodent pests: 95.49% of prey biomass. These owls consumed many urban-associated rodents and shrews at this site. It does not demonstrate universal or population-level rat control.
Tel Aviv, Israel (2007) One breeding pair of Tyto alba hunting cropland beside a residential area. Pellets from the 2005 and 2006 breeding seasons. Six small-mammal species made up 99.3% of the diet; Levant voles: 48.1% and house mice: 32.9% of prey specimens. Small mammals dominated this pair’s urban-edge diet. It does not describe every owl in Tel Aviv or every dense urban neighborhood.
Britain (Barn Owl Trust summary) National diet context, not a city sample. Scope and year are not stated on the cited page. Field voles: 45%; common shrews: 20%; wood mice: 15%. British prey proportions provide background, not a transferable urban estimate.

Do barn owls control urban rats?

They can certainly eat rats where rats are available. The Penang pellets show that Norway rats contributed most of the prey biomass in that particular urban sample. But a predator’s diet is not the same as a demonstrated reduction in the prey population. Rat numbers depend on food waste, shelter, reproduction, immigration and other sources of mortality. The Penang authors explicitly describe biological control as a potential and say its effectiveness remains debated. Treat barn owls as one part of an ecosystem, not as a reliable stand-alone replacement for sanitation, exclusion and evidence-based rodent management.

Urban hazards and what the evidence actually covers

Living near people creates risks as well as feeding opportunities. A British Columbia study examined barn owl habitat use across a rural-to-urban gradient and assessed habitat loss, rodenticide exposure and road mortality. Its fieldwork took place in the Lower Mainland from May 2010 through June 2014. That design makes the study relevant to understanding possible urban stressors, but it does not quantify the risk for every city or climate. Read the British Columbia habitat-use and stressors study.

Rodenticide exposure

Because urban owls may eat rodents that have encountered poison, rodenticide exposure is a specific concern worth evaluating locally. The cited British Columbia work investigated exposure; it should not be read as a universal rate for all urban barn owls. Avoid assuming that a pellet showing a rat or mouse reveals whether that prey carried toxicant residues.

Road mortality

Low hunting flights and fragmented habitat can bring owls near roads. The British Columbia study included road mortality among its assessed stressors, but the available evidence here does not establish one citywide collision rate. Local road design, traffic volume, verge habitat and nearby roosts all matter.

Habitat loss

Replacing open foraging patches with continuous hard surfaces can remove the places where owls locate prey. Conversely, a developed area that retains connected grassland or cropland may still support hunting. Habitat should therefore be evaluated as a map of usable patches and edges, not simply as an urban-versus-rural label.

How to interpret a pellet or an owl sighting

  • A pellet identifies a meal, not a hunting map. Bones and hair can show prey identity, but the pellet alone cannot reveal where the capture occurred.
  • One roost is not a whole city. Nearby habitat and the particular owl or pair strongly influence the sample.
  • Percentages need units. Biomass percentages emphasize the contribution of large prey; specimen percentages count detected individuals.
  • Season matters. The Tel Aviv sample came from two breeding seasons, while other sites may sample different periods.
  • Absence is not proof of absence. A prey species missing from a small pellet sample may still occur in the landscape.

What varies from one city to another?

A useful comparison asks four questions before drawing a conclusion:

  1. What mammals are actually available? A rat-rich market district will not offer the same menu as vole-rich farmland.
  2. Where are the open hunting patches? Measure grass, cropland, verges and yards around the roost, not just the distance to the city center.
  3. Which barn owl population is involved? Regional forms and introduced populations may encounter different prey and conditions.
  4. How was the diet measured? Check pellet number, owl number, season and whether results use biomass or specimen counts.

Following this checklist prevents a striking local statistic—such as Penang’s 95.49% pest biomass or Tel Aviv’s 99.3% small-mammal diet—from being presented as a global urban rule.

The practical answer

In cities, barn owls usually eat whatever small mammals are most accessible in the surrounding habitat. That may mean Norway rats and house shrews in one urban Penang sample, or Levant voles and house mice beside Tel Aviv housing. They hunt mainly by listening during low, slow flights over open ground, often around dusk and dawn, then dropping or pouncing into grass. Urban habitat is best understood as a connected mosaic of foraging patches, edges and built structures—not as buildings alone.
