What to Do If You Find an Injured or Grounded Barn Owl

Keep your distance first, then contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or bird-experienced veterinarian promptly if a Barn Owl is visibly injured, cannot fly as an adult, or you cannot assess it confidently. Move it only when leaving it in place presents immediate danger or a professional directs you to do so. If movement is necessary, use a secure ventilated box or carrier, keep the owl quiet and away from people and pets, and do not offer food or water while you wait for professional advice.

Choose the right response before you approach

A grounded owl is not automatically an emergency that requires you to catch it. The safest first step is to reduce disturbance and decide which branch applies. Barn Owl guidance is species-specific; advice written for Tawny Owls or other species may not fit a Barn Owl.

What you observe Best next action
Adult with a broken, limp or unresponsive wing or leg, eye injury, bleeding, extensive wounds, maggots, foul odor or obvious illness Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or bird-experienced veterinarian promptly. Move the owl only if it is in immediate danger and you can do so safely.
Adult grounded, with no obvious injury, but unable to fly or behaving abnormally Seek professional assessment. Do not assume the bird is merely tired or that it will recover without help.
Young Barn Owl on the ground that appears fit and healthy Establish that it is actually a Barn Owl and identify the exact nest if it can be reached safely and lawfully. A healthy nestling normally belongs in its actual nest.
Any owl in traffic, beside a predator, in a building hazard or otherwise in immediate danger Call for professional instructions. If no immediate help is available and you can handle the bird safely, place it in a secure ventilated container.
You cannot tell whether the owl is injured, young or even a Barn Owl Do not perform a prolonged examination. Keep people and pets back and ask a rehabilitator or bird veterinarian for direction.

The Barn Owl Trust advises contacting a bird-experienced veterinarian or bird rehabilitator “that day or first thing the next morning” when an owl is obviously injured or you cannot assess it yourself (Barn Owl Trust handling guidance). In North Carolina, the Wildlife Resources Commission’s direct instruction is: “If you find an injured owl, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator” (North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission).

Protect yourself and reduce the owl’s stress

Keep a safe perimeter

Stand back initially. Clear children, dogs, cats and other people from the area, and keep noise and bright activity low. Do not crowd the owl to obtain photographs or repeatedly approach it to see whether it will fly. Stress can worsen shock and make a defensive bird harder to contain.

Assume the feet can injure you

Barn Owls have powerful feet and talons even when sick. If a move is unavoidable, wear sturdy clothing and, if available, thin puncture-resistant leather bird-handling gloves. Gloves do not make capture safe for everyone; do not attempt a handling operation that you cannot control. Never hold an owl by a wing, tail or neck.

Do not turn a quick rescue into an examination

A layperson should look only long enough to notice an obvious emergency and decide whether the bird must be moved. Do not spread the wings, manipulate joints, probe wounds, pull at feathers or search deeply for injuries. A professional can examine the owl with appropriate restraint and treatment.

How to move a Barn Owl that is in immediate danger

Call a rehabilitator or bird-experienced veterinarian before handling when a phone is available. Explain the hazard and ask whether they want you to contain the owl. If you must move it, prepare the container first so the bird spends as little time as possible in your hands.

  1. Choose a container. Use a secure pet carrier or a strong cardboard box with ventilation holes. The opening must be large enough to place the owl inside without forcing its wings through a narrow gap, and the lid or door must latch securely.
  2. Pad the base. Put a folded towel on the floor to prevent sliding. Do not use loose string, netting or frayed fabric that can catch talons.
  3. Reduce visual stimulation. Have another towel ready to loosely cover the owl during the move. Darkness or dimness usually keeps an owl calmer, but never block ventilation.
  4. Approach from behind or the side. Move slowly and confidently. Keep your face and hands away from the beak and feet. Do not chase the owl around an open room or field.
  5. Control the feet first. With gloved hands, use the towel to contain the legs and talons while supporting the body. Keep both wings folded against the body; never squeeze the chest, because birds need chest movement to breathe.
  6. Place the owl in the container. Set it upright on the towel, close and secure the lid or door, and cover the outside if that reduces activity. Do not add a perch, bowl or toy.
  7. Recheck security without reopening. Confirm that air can enter, the box cannot tip, and the owl cannot push its head or wings through an opening. Then stop handling.

If the owl is striking, flapping violently or beyond your control, back away and wait for trained help rather than escalating the risk. A secure box and a short, calm transfer are safer than repeated capture attempts.

Keep the owl safely contained while help is arranged

Set up a quiet holding place

Put the closed carrier or box in a quiet room, away from children and pets and out of direct public view. Keep it at room temperature or slightly warmer. Avoid placing it beside a radiator, in direct sun, in a cold garage or in a hot vehicle. The goal is to prevent chilling and overheating, not to create a high-temperature enclosure.

Limit handling and noise

Do not open the container to check the owl every few minutes. Keep conversation, music and other noise low. If a veterinarian or rehabilitator asks for a visual check, follow that professional’s instructions and keep the inspection brief.

Transport only as directed

If you are taking the owl to a professional, keep the box level and secured so it cannot slide. Drive gently, avoid loud audio and do not leave the owl unattended in a parked vehicle. Tell the receiving professional where the box has been kept and whether anything changed during transport. The International Owl Center also recommends quiet containment, careful transport and prompt referral (International Owl Center injured-owl guidance).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not feed or give water unless a professional tells you to

Do not put meat, milk, pellets, water or a dish inside with an injured owl while you wait. An owl may aspirate liquid, worsen an internal injury, or require a different treatment plan than a finder can provide. The World Owl Trust gives general injured-owl first-aid advice not to feed or water while awaiting medical help (World Owl Trust guidance).

Advice about feeding young owlets in a rehabilitation setting is not permission for an untrained finder to improvise food or fluid treatment. Tell the professional when the owl was found and whether it may have eaten or drunk anything before containment.

When the grounded bird is a young Barn Owl

Confirm the species and condition

Young owls of different species can need different responses. Do not apply a Tawny Owl or generic “baby bird” rule to a suspected Barn Owl. If you cannot identify the species confidently, describe the bird and its location to a rehabilitator rather than guessing.

The Barn Owl Trust states that nestling Barn Owls are normally in the nest until they begin flying. A fit, healthy nestling should be returned to its actual nest when this can be done safely and lawfully (Barn Owl Trust young-Barn-Owl guidance). “Actual” matters: placing a chick in a nearby tree, shed or substitute nest may separate it from its parents.

When not to return a young owl yourself

Do not attempt a nest return when the bird has a limp or unresponsive wing or leg, marked differences between its wings, legs or eyes, bleeding, eye damage, extensive soft-tissue injury, maggots, foul odor or obvious illness. Those observations are referral signs, not a do-it-yourself diagnosis. Contact an experienced rehabilitator or bird veterinarian promptly if any are present.

Do not climb an unsafe structure, enter a restricted area or disturb an occupied nest to carry out a return. If the nest cannot be reached safely and lawfully, ask a professional what to do with the chick and how to protect the site in the meantime.

Give the rehabilitator useful information

Write notes before details are forgotten and pass them to the person taking the owl. Include:

  • Exact location, including a nearby address, road, landmark or map pin.
  • Date and approximate time found.
  • Your name and a reliable contact method.
  • What you saw happen, such as a collision, fall, predator encounter or unknown event.
  • Visible signs, without attempting to diagnose them.
  • Whether the bird was an adult or young bird and how species identification was made.
  • Any handling, food, water or medication already given.
  • Container and transport conditions, including how long the owl has been held.

Keep the original location information. A rehabilitator may need it to investigate hazards, locate a nest or plan eventual release. The International Owl Center’s finder guidance likewise emphasizes recording circumstances and passing those notes to the receiving professional (International Owl Center).

Legal rules depend on where you found the owl

Wildlife law and rescue arrangements are local. In North Carolina, the Wildlife Resources Commission describes Barn Owls and other birds of prey as protected under federal and state law and directs finders to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator (North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission). In the United Kingdom, the Barn Owl Trust summarizes restrictions on disturbing occupied nests and nestlings (Barn Owl Trust).

Neither jurisdiction’s rules should be treated as universal. Before moving a healthy young bird, check your national, state, provincial or local wildlife agency and follow its instructions. A licensed rehabilitator can usually explain who is authorized to handle, transport and release the owl in your area.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives

  • Trying to make an adult fly: Repeatedly tossing or chasing it can worsen injuries. Call for assessment instead.
  • Offering water in a dish: A stressed owl can spill it, become chilled or aspirate liquid. Withhold food and water unless directed.
  • Using an open box or uncovered basket: The owl may escape or injure itself. Use a ventilated container that closes securely.
  • Holding the chest tightly: Birds need chest movement to breathe. Support the body while keeping the thorax uncompressed.
  • Leaving the box in a busy place: Noise, pets and repeated checking increase stress. Use a quiet, temperature-stable room.
  • Assuming every grounded young owl needs the same action: Species, age, health and nest access change the correct response. Get species-specific advice.
  • Forgetting the location: Release planning can depend on the original site. Record it precisely before transport.

A simple decision sequence

  1. Move people and pets away and observe from a safe distance.
  2. Decide whether the owl is an adult or young bird and whether immediate danger exists; if unsure, call a professional.
  3. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or bird-experienced veterinarian promptly for any visible injury, inability to fly, abnormal behavior or uncertainty.
  4. If a professional advises containment, or danger makes it unavoidable, prepare a padded, ventilated box before handling.
  5. Contain the owl briefly and calmly, keep it quiet at room temperature or slightly warmer, and do not feed or water it.
  6. Send the professional the exact location, time, circumstances and actions already taken, then follow transport and legal instructions.
