Early childhood classes give them opportunities to explore objects, hear and use communication, move their bodies, interact with others and try early concepts such as matching, sorting and patterns. These are opportunities to practice—not guaranteed outcomes or formal lessons every child will experience in the same way.
How learning happens in early childhood classes
For infants and toddlers, learning is woven into interactions and play rather than limited to direct instruction. An adult who responds to a baby’s gaze or sound creates a back-and-forth exchange; a toddler who tries a puzzle is exploring how objects fit. One activity can support several areas at once: a song with gestures, for example, combines listening, movement, imitation and interaction.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) states, “Play is essential for all children, birth through age 8,” in its Principles of Child Development and Learning and Implications That Inform Practice. Adult guidance can extend children’s interests while leaving room for children to explore in their own way.

What children may practice
Language and communication
Talking, listening, stories, songs, imitation and turn-taking give young children chances to hear communication and respond with sounds, gestures or words. The CDC recommends singing and playing music with babies and reading with toddlers. A music or reading class is not required for typical development; these are examples of everyday ways adults can engage children.
#1 Best Overall
Thinking and problem-solving
Babies explore people and objects with their attention and senses. Toddlers increasingly imitate, follow simple directions, match or sort objects, pretend and work through small problems. For toddlers aged 1–2, the CDC suggests activities such as matching games, shape sorting and simple puzzles. NYC Public Schools describes early childhood activities that can support problem-solving, imaginative thinking, early literacy and early math, including numbers, shapes, patterns and sorting.
Movement and physical exploration
Reaching, rolling, crawling, walking, dancing, balancing and handling materials are all ways young children explore. The CDC’s developmental milestones include how children move, while ZERO TO THREE discusses movement and motor development as part of early development. A class might offer room to move or materials to handle, but children can participate at different levels.

Social and emotional practice
Shared play gives children practical chances to notice others, wait briefly, take turns, express feelings and begin to manage frustration. CDC examples for toddlers include imitation, pretend play, turn-taking and expressing a range of emotions. These abilities develop gradually: toddlers do not need to share consistently or sit through extended group instruction to be learning.

Age-aware examples of class participation
| Age | What participation may look like | Examples of learning opportunities |
|---|---|---|
| Babies, birth to 12 months | Watching, listening, reaching, moving safely and engaging with a responsive adult; a baby may observe much of a group activity. | Face-to-face interaction, voices and songs, repeated routines, back-and-forth attention and safe movement exploration. The CDC describes cognitive development in terms of memory, language, thinking and reasoning, and recommends singing and playing music with babies. |
| Toddlers, 1–2 years | Exploring objects, moving around, copying adults or older children and trying simple directions. | Matching or sorting objects and trying simple puzzles. The CDC notes that toddlers in this age range become more mobile and more aware of themselves and their surroundings. |
| Toddlers, 2–3 years | Imitating others, expressing feelings and beginning to join shared play. | Pretend play, turn-taking, simple instructions, sorting by shape or color and kicking a ball. The CDC lists these as skills that commonly emerge in this period, not class requirements or a diagnostic checklist. |
Children of the same age may engage differently depending on temperament, culture, language and development. Quiet observation can be participation, particularly for babies.

What a class or program day can include
There is no single class format. NYC Public Schools describes early childhood programs that may use short whole-group and small-group activities, child-choice exploration, outdoor play, rest and meals or snacks. A parent-child enrichment class may be much shorter, with songs, movement, stories, sensory exploration or free play; the schedule depends on the provider.
In a responsive approach, the adult notices what interests a child and offers support or a new possibility without turning every moment into an adult-directed task. That can mean giving a child time to explore, adapting an activity or allowing a break.

How to compare early childhood classes
When comparing options, consider how the class fits your child and family rather than assuming that one format suits every child. Useful questions include:
- What ages does the class serve, and how are activities adapted for different developmental stages?
- Does a caregiver participate, and how much adult attention is available during the session?
- What is the mix of songs, movement, stories, sensory play and open exploration?
- How long is a session, and does the location work for your family’s access needs?
- How does the instructor respond when a child wants to observe, needs a break or is not ready to join an activity?
Developmentally responsive principles can help you assess a class, but the sources here do not establish that one branded provider is superior to another.

- MULTIPLE WAYS TO PLAY: Try a variety of engaging activities — sort one vowel at a time, discover more words with the same sound, do category-based sorting, or combine picture pieces to create short stories and boost language development.
- DEVELOPS KEY SKILLS: Strengthens fine motor skills, sharpens observation and mental processing, and boosts decision-making and critical thinking — all through exciting, hands-on play.
When to seek developmental guidance
A class is one setting for learning, not a promise that a child will reach a particular milestone. If you have concerns about your child’s development, use the CDC’s milestone resources and discuss your concerns with the child’s health care provider or early intervention services.
