People with inherited retinal blindness may use a mix of low-vision aids, phone and computer accessibility features, screen readers, optical character recognition (OCR), Braille devices, and orientation and mobility training. The right combination depends on the person’s remaining vision, preferred way to access information, daily tasks, and goals; no single device suits everyone or restores sight.
Start with the task and the vision that remains
Inherited retinal dystrophies can affect vision in different ways. Some people may find magnification useful for close reading; for someone with a restricted peripheral field, a smaller magnified image may make it easier to keep more of the scene in view. What helps depends on the person and the task.

A low-vision assessment can help identify useful aids, techniques, and training. The National Eye Institute (NEI) recommends using a magnifying lens for reading and other close-up activities, and describes training in how to use magnifying devices. An assessment may also consider lighting and contrasting colors. NEI low-vision guidance and RNIB guidance on retinitis pigmentosa and inherited retinal dystrophies describe these options.

Options for reading and close work
Magnifiers, lighting, and contrast
A handheld magnifying lens can help with print or other close-up tasks when magnification suits the person’s usable vision. Suitable lighting and stronger contrast may also make some tasks easier. A low-vision practitioner can help determine which magnification and technique works in practice.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Electronic magnification and OCR
Handheld or desktop electronic magnifiers can display enlarged print. Some systems use OCR to convert printed words into digital text, which can then be read aloud. The useful distinction is whether the person wants to inspect enlarged text visually, listen to it, or switch between those approaches. Fighting Blindness Ireland’s overview of low-vision aids, magnifiers, and Braille describes these categories.
Make phones, tablets, and computers easier to use
Built-in accessibility settings on phones, tablets, and computers may include larger text, contrast adjustments, spoken output, screen magnification, and screen reading. Dedicated apps or software can add options. The best setup depends on whether the person wants to enlarge what is on screen, listen to text, or use a combination. RNIB’s assistive aids and technology guidance covers digital accessibility and assistive technology.

Choose speech or Braille for nonvisual access
Screen readers and speech output
Screen readers provide spoken access to content on a computer or mobile device. Speech output is also useful with OCR: a camera or scanner can capture printed material, OCR can turn it into text, and a compatible tool can read that text aloud.

Braille devices
People who use Braille may consider electronic Braille displays, Braille note-takers, or embossers. These serve different reading and writing needs; a person’s Braille preferences and daily tasks help determine which type is appropriate. The Fighting Blindness Ireland guide discusses Braille devices alongside magnifiers and other aids.

Support safer, more confident travel
Orientation and mobility instruction can help a person develop practical travel skills suited to their vision and environment. Navigation apps, wearables, and smart canes may also be options to explore with a specialist, but a device should not be treated as a substitute for individualized instruction or travel skills.
NEI describes wearable cameras, smart canes, and advanced wayfinding as areas of technology development, not as universally established solutions for everyday travel. Availability and suitability can vary by person and setting. See NEI’s technology-development concept clearance.

How to choose and get support
When comparing options, consider the task, the vision the person can use, preferred output, portability, and the training required. Access, compatibility, cost, and public support also vary by location.
- For near reading: ask about magnification, lighting, contrast, and hands-on instruction.
- For digital access: try built-in settings such as larger text, contrast changes, speech, and screen reading; consider dedicated software if needed.
- For printed material: compare visual electronic magnification with OCR and speech, based on how the person prefers to read.
- For Braille: match a display, note-taker, or embosser to the person’s reading and writing needs.
- For travel: seek orientation and mobility instruction, then assess whether a navigation tool is useful in the person’s circumstances.
A low-vision professional or assistive-technology specialist can help assess options and provide instruction. Local services can explain what is available and whether support or funding may apply.
