The best-described pathway is Luxturna (voretigene neparvovec-rzyl), a surgery-based treatment for eligible people with inherited retinal dystrophy caused by confirmed mutations in both copies of the RPE65 gene and enough viable retinal cells. Its precautions should not be assumed to apply to every retinal gene therapy.
After Luxturna, expect close follow-up, careful observance of your surgeon’s instructions, and travel restrictions until an air bubble in the treated eye has disappeared and your clinician clears you. Some people gain useful functional vision, especially in low light, but normal sight is not guaranteed. Rehabilitation may still help with everyday tasks.

What should I expect after retinal gene therapy?
For Luxturna, treatment involves surgery to deliver the medicine beneath the retina. A US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services coverage document describes vitrectomy and an air-fluid exchange as part of the procedure. It also describes treating the other eye 6–18 days after the first. These are protocol details in a coverage document, not a schedule or positioning order for every patient; your surgical team’s directions take priority. CMS coverage document.
The same document describes supine head positioning—lying on your back—as much as possible for the first 24 hours. Your surgeon will tell you what positioning is appropriate for your operation and how to manage it at home. Anti-inflammatory medication may also be prescribed as part of the treatment course. Follow the written regimen from your care team; do not change or stop medication on your own. CMS coverage document.

Follow-up and the eye patch
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia says the treated eye is patched for 24–48 hours and that visits with the surgeon and retinal specialist are frequent during the initial postoperative period. After a patient returns home, CHOP recommends retinal-specialist visits at least once a year. The treatment center or the patient’s original eye-care professional may provide ongoing follow-up. CHOP’s Luxturna guidance; official Luxturna patient information.
How long is recovery after Luxturna?
There is no single recovery duration established for every patient. The immediate postoperative period includes an eye patch and close visits, while precautions may continue until your clinician confirms that the air bubble has disappeared. That bubble can take one week or more to dissipate, according to the manufacturer; this is not a guaranteed clearance date. Your examination and clinician’s instructions determine when restrictions end. Official Luxturna patient information; CHOP’s Luxturna guidance.

Can I fly after Luxturna?
Do not fly, travel to high elevations, or scuba dive until your healthcare professional has confirmed that the air bubble in the treated eye has disappeared. Pressure changes during air travel or at altitude can be dangerous while an intraocular gas bubble remains. Do not use the typical one-week-or-more dissipation estimate to decide for yourself that travel is safe. Ask your clinician before making travel plans. Official Luxturna patient information.
Which symptoms need prompt attention?
Luxturna’s official patient information advises contacting your healthcare professional promptly for floaters, eye pain, flashes, or any change in vision, including decreased or blurred vision. These symptoms can have different causes, so they need assessment by your care team rather than remote diagnosis. The product information also identifies possible serious complications including infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis), retinal abnormalities, retinal tear or detachment, increased eye pressure, cataract formation or progression, and permanent decline in visual acuity. Will my vision come back?
Some people experience meaningful improvement in functional vision, particularly the ability to navigate in dim light. That is different from a promise of normal visual acuity or restoration of all vision lost to disease. Individual outcomes vary, and study results describe groups rather than predict what will happen for one person.

The European Medicines Agency’s 2019 public summary describes a main study of 31 patients that tested navigation along a route with turns and obstacles under different lighting. At one year, treated patients’ mobility-test scores improved by 1.8 points on average, compared with 0.2 points in the comparison group. At the lowest light level, 13 of 21 treated patients (62%) passed the test, compared with none of the untreated patients. The EMA reports that the improvement was maintained for at least three years. These results concern a functional mobility test, not a guarantee of improved standard visual acuity or safe driving. European Medicines Agency assessment.

Possibly. Treatment and rehabilitation address different needs: a therapy may improve some visual functions without removing every difficulty with reading, household tasks, or getting around. There is no universal Luxturna-specific rehabilitation schedule established in the sources cited here. If daily activities remain difficult, ask your retinal specialist or primary eye-care professional whether a low-vision rehabilitation assessment would be useful.
Vision-loss services can include low-vision therapy, occupational therapy, orientation and mobility instruction, rehabilitation teaching, assistive technology, and practical home adaptations. A rehabilitation professional can help identify strategies and tools that fit your remaining vision and personal goals; a particular magnifier, app, or technique will not suit everyone. National Eye Institute vision rehabilitation information; Review of retinal gene therapy and rehabilitation.
What differs between retinal gene therapies?
Luxturna’s eligibility, surgery, air-bubble precautions, positioning, medication, and follow-up should not be generalized to other retinal gene therapies. Luxturna is for a specific inherited retinal disease associated with confirmed mutations in both copies of RPE65 and sufficient viable retinal cells. Approvals, access, and clinical protocols may also vary by location; the EMA’s information reflects EU regulatory review, while CHOP and CMS describe US-facing guidance. For any treatment, use the instructions from the team performing it.
