The game calls the feature Scent Trails or a Senses effect: it helps Logan follow a specific scent or clue, rather than depicting a fart mechanic. What appears—and whether you can hide it—depends on the type of cue and the game update.
What “fart trails” means in Marvel’s Wolverine
The nickname refers to a visual trail shown as Logan tracks a scent or clue. Insomniac’s official materials use the terms “Scent Trails” and “Senses effect,” not “fart trails.”

Insomniac community and marketing director James Stevenson explained, as reported by the secondary outlet, that the trail appears when Logan is tracking a particular scent or sound. His reported examples include a person, whisky, or another clue scent. The official update notes do not give a complete list of story-trail triggers.

They appear when the game uses a Senses cue to help with tracking. Not every on-screen trail is a scent trail, however: the game also has separate indicators for collectibles, audio clues, Nightmare Door roots, and navigation.

Can you turn Wolverine’s trails off?
Controls differ by cue and update. Insomniac’s update 1.001.006 notes added individual on/off toggles for Whisky Bottle Scent Trails, Material Crate Audio Clues, and Nightmare Door Roots. The notes say story-critical Senses still appear in the world, so those optional toggles should not be read as a blanket switch for every tracking cue.
In update 1.002.001, Insomniac added an option to show story-related Scent Trails with the Hint button, which is R3 by default. This gives players control over when those story trails are revealed; it is separate from the collectible and clue toggles introduced earlier. The control information here reflects those official updates and may differ if the game receives later changes.

Where to find the related visual settings
Insomniac’s accessibility feature list names both Senses-effect color customization and Navigation Assist. Use the in-game accessibility settings to locate those options; the available update notes do not establish a more specific menu path. Navigation Assist changes objective guidance, while Senses settings affect the relevant clue indicators.
Marvel’s Wolverine is a single-player PS5 game. PlayStation announced September 15, 2026 as its release date; see PlayStation’s game page for the product information.
