A black screen, game crash, or AMD driver timeout is a symptom—not proof that the Radeon GPU has failed. Software conflicts, unstable tuning, heat, memory, power, connections, and other hardware can all contribute. Work through one change at a time, beginning with what changed before the problem started.
Record when the problem happens
Before changing settings, note the exact message, when the failure occurs, and what is running. Record whether it affects one game or application, several workloads, or the whole desktop. Also note any recent game or Windows update, graphics-driver change, BIOS adjustment, new component, or newly connected peripheral.

These distinctions help narrow the investigation, but labels such as “driver timeout,” crash or hang, TDR, BSOD, and WHEA hardware error event do not identify one universal cause. AMD’s stability guidance calls for systematic troubleshooting rather than assuming the graphics card is defective.

Return the system to a standard configuration
Remove tuning as a variable before pursuing more disruptive fixes. Restore Radeon Software tuning and CPU or memory overclocks to their defaults. If practical, disable third-party overclocking and monitoring utilities, disconnect nonessential peripherals, and remove an aftermarket riser or extension for a controlled test.

Follow the PC, motherboard, and GPU makers’ instructions before changing BIOS settings or handling components. Keep Windows, chipset drivers, and graphics drivers appropriately current, but change one item at a time so you can tell whether stability improves. AMD summarizes the approach this way: “Isolating system stability issues requires thorough and systematic troubleshooting.”
Check driver notes for your exact game and GPU
A driver fix or known issue may apply only to a particular game, Radeon family, or feature combination. Check the release notes for the installed driver and compare the listed workload and conditions with your own. For example, AMD’s Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 Optional Driver Release Notes, last updated September 29, 2026, list fixes for specific timeout or freeze scenarios in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on RX 7000, War Thunder with specified capture features on RX 6000, and HITMAN World of Assassination on RX 9000. The notes also identify a War Thunder timeout on RX 5000 and recommend 26.9.1 for that particular issue. These examples are not universal fixes.
Check the notes’ compatibility details before installing: 26.9.2 lists Windows 11 version 21H2 and later and Windows 10 64-bit version 21H2 and later, while supported Radeon products vary. AMD recommends the PC maker’s drivers for laptops and all-in-one PCs because they may be customized and validated for system-specific features; handhelds should use drivers from the device maker. Confirm support for your exact product and operating system on AMD’s live driver information before proceeding.

Clean-install or roll back only if the driver is a plausible cause
If the problem began after a driver update, or the installed driver appears corrupted, a clean installation or return to a previously stable version may be appropriate. AMD’s stability article recommends using the installer’s Factory Reset option for a clean install; its troubleshooting tips also mention AMD Cleanup Utility.
For a downgrade from Adrenalin 26.9.2, AMD specifically recommends using Cleanup Utility. If the issue began with an update and the release notes do not identify a workaround, AMD says to consider returning to the earlier driver version where the issue did not occur. After any change, repeat the affected workload and record the result rather than changing several drivers or settings at once.
Look for application or Windows conflicts
Update the affected game or application and review its publisher’s issue notes. If crashes continue, try a selective startup that disables non-Microsoft services and startup items, following AMD’s troubleshooting tips. If the problem appears broader than one application, AMD also points to System File Checker and System Restore as Windows diagnostic options. These are general system checks, not guaranteed Radeon fixes. Back up important files before a Windows reset or reinstall.

Check temperature, memory, seating, and power
If software checks do not resolve the issue, inspect hardware using the system and component makers’ instructions. Do not open or alter equipment in ways that could create a safety risk or affect warranty coverage.
- Cooling: Check that airflow and cooling are adequate, and test with GPU and CPU tuning at defaults.
- Memory: Confirm RAM configuration against the motherboard guidance. If the system has multiple DIMMs, AMD recommends testing modules individually; MemTest86 is one third-party memory-scanning option named in AMD’s guidance.
- GPU connection: For a discrete card, check that it is seated in the primary PCIe slot. If a riser cable is present, test without it when practical.
- Power: Verify that GPU power connectors are secure and that the PSU meets the system’s requirements. AMD recommends independent PSU cables connected directly to the supply. Modular PSU cables are model-specific; do not substitute a generic cable.
Escalate persistent instability with useful details
If the computer remains unstable at stock settings after relevant software and hardware checks, contact the PC maker, component manufacturer, or AMD support channel as appropriate. Warranty terms depend on the system or component maker.
AMD asks support requests to include the CPU and GPU part and serial numbers, motherboard, RAM, cooler, and PSU make and model; clear interior photos; system information such as Msinfo32 and DXDiag; and notes on the tests already performed. A concise record of what changed and what each test did can help support staff avoid repeating steps.
