TMR thumbsticks use tunneling magnetoresistance to detect stick movement without a potentiometer’s rubbing contact. Hall effect sticks also use contactless magnetic sensing, but rely on a different physical effect. Both can reduce drift caused by wear at the sensing track. Neither guarantees a controller will never drift: mechanics, calibration, firmware, electronics, and damage still matter.
How TMR thumbsticks work
TMR stands for tunneling magnetoresistance. In a magnetic tunnel junction, magnetic layers are separated by a very thin insulating barrier. The electrical resistance changes with the magnetic orientation. In a thumbstick, movement changes the magnetic signal read by the sensor; controller electronics translate it into a stick position.

GameSir describes its TMR sensor structure as “dual magnetic layers + ultra-thin insulating layer.” TDK describes its TMR angle and linear sensors as contactless sensors for measuring position and angle. GameSir’s technology overview and TDK InvenSense’s TMR overview explain the underlying approach.
Traditional potentiometer sticks detect position using a contact wiper that moves across a resistive track. Magnetic sensors do not need that rubbing contact to read position, removing one wear mechanism associated with drift. Other mechanical and electronic parts of the controller can still wear, shift, or fail.

TMR vs. Hall effect: what differs?
Both approaches use magnets and contactless sensing. TMR measures a resistance change associated with magnetic layers; Hall effect sensors measure a voltage response to a magnetic field. That distinction explains how they work, but does not by itself establish which complete controller performs better.
| Comparison | TMR | Hall effect | What it means for a player |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sensing principle | Resistance changes with magnetic orientation in a tunnel-magnetoresistance sensor. | A voltage response is produced by a magnetic field. | Both avoid a potentiometer’s rubbing sensing track. |
| Wear-related drift | Removes wear at the contact sensing track. | Has the same broad non-contact advantage. | Neither rules out drift or other input problems from damage, debris, centering, calibration, or component failure. |
| Sensitivity and precision | Manufacturers promote high sensitivity. TDK claims over 10× higher sensitivity for its TMR sensors. | Used in magnetic sensing and controller products. | TDK’s sensor-level figure is not a universal comparison of TMR and Hall thumbsticks. Calibration and controller electronics also matter. |
| Power | Manufacturers promote low power use. | Depends on the particular sensor and circuit. | TMR may suit wireless devices, but the sensor label alone does not establish a battery-life improvement. |
| Feel and setup | SCUF says its TMR implementation retains a familiar feel. | SCUF describes its Hall effect implementation as quick and snappy, and says some players may need an adjustment period. | Feel varies by product and is partly mechanical; where possible, check return terms or try the controller. |
| Compatibility | Depends on the controller model and module. | Also model-specific. | A technology label does not prove that a replacement module fits physically or electrically. |
TDK’s “over 10× higher sensitivity” figure is its claim about its TMR sensor offering, not proof that every TMR stick is ten times more accurate than a Hall effect stick. GameSir’s technology page lists TMR specifications of 12-bit resolution, under 1 ms sensor response time, 5+ million cycles, and under 1 mA operating current; these are manufacturer-stated specifications, not independently validated comparisons. The same page lists 5+ million cycles for its Hall effect section, without establishing a shared testing method. See TDK’s TMR overview and GameSir’s technology page.

Does TMR prevent stick drift?
It can reduce the wear-related drift risk associated with potentiometer tracks, but “never drifts” is too strong. SCUF says both TMR and Hall effect avoid the principal wear mechanism in traditional potentiometer sticks, while noting that impact damage, debris, calibration errors, or component failure can still cause drift or input problems. SCUF’s explanation of Endurance thumbsticks describes those limits.
The sensor is only one part of the input system. Stick geometry and spring centering, calibration, firmware dead zones, analog-to-digital conversion, controller polling, and game settings can all affect the behavior a player feels. No independent, controlled comparison of matched TMR and Hall effect controllers establishes a general winner for accuracy, latency, or battery life.

Which controllers use TMR sticks?
Manufacturers identify specific products rather than establishing a universal TMR standard. SCUF lists the Omega as a PS5/PC controller with TMR thumbsticks standard. It lists the Valor Pro Wireless for Xbox Series X|S/PC with TMR, while the Valor Pro Wired uses Hall effect and supports Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. GameSir identifies the Cyclone 2 as a featured TMR controller and describes both TMR and Hall effect products across its range. Product lineups and platform support can change, so check the exact current product page before buying.
How to choose a TMR or Hall effect controller
Compare complete controllers rather than treating “TMR” and “Hall effect” as standardized performance grades. Check these factors for the exact models you are considering:

What to check before buying a replacement module
Do not assume a generic TMR or Hall effect module fits every controller. Identify the exact controller model and revision, then verify the replacement’s dimensions and electrical interface, calibration requirements, and whether installation requires soldering. The TMR Joystick Controllers overview also advises matching modules to specific controllers; the controller maker’s compatibility documentation should take precedence.
