If a swing, shake, or soccer kick is not registering in Nintendo Switch Sports, first check the wireless environment and console placement, then recalibrate the Joy-Con gyro and hold the controller with its + or − button at the top. For soccer, check the leg strap fit. If the problem continues, test another Joy-Con and use Nintendo’s service guidance before buying a replacement.
Start with the game-specific checks
Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Sports troubleshooting FAQ recommends checking nearby wireless interference, metal console placement, unlicensed covers, gyro calibration, and Joy-Con orientation. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes.

Move away from possible wireless interference
Temporarily switch off nearby devices that may cause radio interference, such as a microwave oven or cordless phone, or move the console and play area farther from them. Test whether the motion input improves.

Take the console out of a metal rack
If the Switch is inside a metal rack, remove it from the rack and test again. Nintendo lists this as a possible cause of poor motion response.
#1 Best Overall
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
Remove unlicensed covers temporarily
If an unlicensed cover is fitted to the console or controller, remove it while testing. This helps determine whether the cover is contributing to the problem.
Recalibrate the gyro sensor
For the game-specific gyro check, open HOME menu > System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Gyro Sensor Calibration, then follow the on-screen prompts. Nintendo’s menu wording may differ by region or system software version.
If you need the general Joy-Con motion calibration workflow, Nintendo’s controller calibration instructions call for these steps:
Recommended Free Tools
- Remove straps and accessories from the controller.
- Check that the console has the latest system update.
- Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls.
- Hold the − or + button on the controller as prompted, then detach the controller when instructed.
- Place the Joy-Con on a flat, stable surface with its stick facing upward. Wait for calibration to finish, then select OK.
Hold the Joy-Con with the buttons at the top
Nintendo says to hold the Joy-Con with the + or − button at the top while playing. Holding it another way can make some shaking inputs harder to register, including a tennis serve. Check the orientation before assuming the controller is faulty.
For soccer kicks, check the leg strap
If the problem is limited to soccer kicks while using the leg strap, confirm that it is fitted correctly. Nintendo says an incorrectly fitted strap can make kicks harder to register. Follow Nintendo’s leg-strap placement guidance for the fitting details rather than guessing at measurements or landmarks.
Isolate the Joy-Con and decide whether it needs service
If the Nintendo Switch Sports checks do not help, compare with another Joy-Con if one is available. Also note whether the same motion problem occurs in other software that supports motion controls. This helps distinguish a game-specific symptom from a controller problem.
Rank #3
- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Nintendo’s general Joy-Con motion troubleshooting also recommends checking for the latest system update and controller firmware, resetting a detached Joy-Con by pressing SYNC once and then another button, and calibrating motion controls. If a protective cover may be blocking the right Joy-Con’s IR motion camera, remove it temporarily and test again.
Nintendo says the affected Joy-Con needs service if motion controls fail in any supported software or if calibration cannot be completed. Check service eligibility before buying a replacement; a single poorly registered input in Nintendo Switch Sports does not by itself establish hardware failure.

| Symptom or scope | What to check | What Nintendo’s guidance supports |
|---|---|---|
| Response worsens around electronics or when the console is in a metal rack | Move away from possible interference and test the console outside the rack | Nintendo lists both as game-specific checks. |
| Shaking or a tennis serve is hard to register | Check button-up Joy-Con orientation and calibrate the gyro | Nintendo specifies the orientation and gyro calibration menu. |
| Soccer kicks are unreliable while using the leg strap | Verify the strap is fitted correctly | Nintendo identifies incorrect fit as a possible cause of poor kick response. |
| The problem follows one controller or occurs in other supported games | Try another Joy-Con if possible; update, reset, and calibrate; seek service if it persists or calibration fails | Nintendo recommends comparing controllers and provides the service threshold. |
