The Northern Lights (aurora borealis) and Southern Lights (aurora australis) are the same natural phenomenon: glowing displays produced when energetic particles interact with gases high in Earth’s atmosphere. They are usually seen near the Arctic and Antarctic regions, though strong geomagnetic activity can sometimes make auroras visible farther from the poles.
Are the Northern and Southern Lights the same?
Yes. “Northern Lights” is the common name for the aurora borealis, while “Southern Lights” refers to the aurora australis. The names describe where each display appears, not different physical processes. Both form through interactions between energetic particles, Earth’s magnetic environment and the upper atmosphere.

The Northern Lights are associated with high northern latitudes; the Southern Lights occur around high southern latitudes. Which one a person can see depends largely on location, darkness, weather and geomagnetic activity.
How do the Northern Lights happen?
- The Sun sends out charged particles. The solar wind continually flows outward from the Sun and interacts with Earth’s magnetosphere, the region shaped by our planet’s magnetic field.
- Energy reaches the upper atmosphere. Energy can build up in the magnetosphere and be released along magnetic field lines, directing energetic particles toward the atmosphere.
- Atmospheric gases glow. The incoming particles collide with atoms and molecules, giving them energy. As those gases return to lower-energy states, they release light that we see as an aurora.
A coronal mass ejection is an eruption of magnetized solar material that can send plasma toward Earth. If it is directed toward our planet and conditions support a strong interaction with the magnetosphere, it can help trigger a geomagnetic storm and a broad, bright aurora. A solar flare or eruption does not automatically produce a visible display: its direction and the magnetic conditions matter. NASA explains how solar storms and flares interact with Earth.

Why are auroras different colors?
Color depends on which atmospheric gas is involved, the energy of the collision and the altitude where the light is emitted. NASA’s altitude ranges are approximate rather than sharp boundaries:
| Color | Gas associated with the color | Approximate altitude |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Oxygen | At or above 120 miles (200 km) |
| Green | Oxygen | About 60–120 miles (100–200 km); NASA describes green as the most common aurora color |
| Blue | Nitrogen | About 60–120 miles (100–200 km) |
| Pink | Nitrogen | At or below 60 miles (100 km) |
Different gases and collision conditions produce different wavelengths of light, which our eyes perceive as different colors. Oxygen can produce green and red light; nitrogen can produce blue, pink or purple tones. NASA’s aurora explanation describes the relationship between atmospheric gases, altitude and color.

Where and when can you see them?
Auroras occur most often at high latitudes near the Arctic and Antarctic circles. During periods of strong geomagnetic activity, the auroral region can expand toward lower latitudes, but sightings there are uncommon. The Southern Lights are also harder for many people to access because they occur around the comparatively remote high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere.

Dark skies are essential: look after dark from a place with an unobstructed view and, when possible, little light pollution. Clouds, local weather, location and current space-weather conditions all affect whether a display will be visible. Check a current official space-weather forecast for activity-specific guidance; a forecast cannot guarantee that clouds will clear or that a display will be visible from your exact location.

At locations away from the near-polar regions, an aurora may appear faint and gray, with less visible structure to the unaided eye. A photograph can reveal more color or detail than a casual glance. NASA notes that auroras can appear more clearly in photographs for observers outside the near-polar regions. NASA’s overview of the Northern Lights discusses how they look to observers.

The aurora is a light display in the upper atmosphere, not a hazard to people watching from the ground. Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field protect people on the surface from the worst effects of solar storms. However, the wider geomagnetic event that can produce an aurora may affect technology, including radio communications, satellites and power systems. NASA’s solar-storm overview distinguishes those technology impacts from the visible aurora.
